I did not try engaging cruise while in manual mode. What I did try though, was switching to manual mode after settling down at 80 and then manually shift to 6th. And, nope, no luck. Car stayed in 5th and refused to shift to 6th.

And oh, I have tried (a few times on earlier drives) driving completely in manual mode from a complete stop. The car still never let me shift to 6th until I reached 90 or higher.

From my experience with few automatic cars i have driven, in manual mode you can keep the car revs at a particular gear without upshifting, the minute the ECU senses a particular engine RPM which does not match for the selected gear it will downshift. I have not tried revving to the redline in any automatic cars though, so I'm not able to comment if it would upshift automatically in manual mode, but downshift is done automatically even if you forget.
So every car's gearbox has a sweet spot, for optimum fuel efficiency and power delivery, upshifting quickly in a manual car also, does not guarantee good fuel efficiency. I have noticed in my City Diesel, if I drive in 6th gear at 80kmph, I get lower FE, rather if maintained around 90kmph, it gives the best fuel efficiency. After a point, you just have to enjoy your car and not worry about FE, you should keep a check only as an indicative to some other issues with the car. Drive safe and enjoy..
Cheers

Re: Useless cupholders | YATOR (Yet Another Thar Ownership Review)

Host (to camera): Hello friends, I am back with one more video. If you like my content, please SMAAAASH that like button and HIT that bell icon so that you you will never miss any future content from me. And please subscribe.Today we have a surprise guest.

(Camera pans to reveal Tilt and leaves viewer wondering what the surprise is).

Host: Welcome Mr.Tilt, we are all waiting to hear about your experience with your Thar that you have owned for more than a year now. How long have you had the Thar?

Tilt (very helpfully): More than a year now.

Host: And I see you like it very much. Do you like it?

Tilt (still being helpful): Yes I like it.

Host (to camera): Mr.Tilt has completed 22000 kms on his Thar.

Host: Mr.Tilt, how many kms have you done on your Thar?

Tilt (getting a bit irked but still trying his best to be courteous): Twenty… Thousand.

Host: I noticed that you still have the original bumper, no 22-inch alloys, no chrome accents, no multi-coloured rod-lights, no sub-woofer etc. How come?

Tilt: I live in Bangalore, not Delhi or Punjab; and I actually use my car for road-trips and for off-roading instead of just taking pictures and videos for fake internet-points.

Host: But you have installed underbody protection.

Tilt (now exasperated and regretting some life-choices): Yes I have - mild-steel, from Prad; and it gives me peace of mind. Like I said, it helps when I go off-roading.

Host: Oh, and what other exciting mods have you installed?

Tilt: Leather steering-wheel cover, Proman grab handle that is a much better design than that stupid design from Bimbra; dash cam and floor-mats

Host: I asked about exciting mods and you say floor-mats?

Tilt: Well, the OEM accessory mats were slippery like a dance-floor. I prefer my feet to stay where I place them rather than make me look like I want to be Michael Jackson.

Host: No extra lights or LED lights?

Tilt: I do not drive in the dark, so the stock lights are good enough for me.

Host: No speaker upgrade? No subwoofer?

Tilt: No, I have some hearing loss and am unable to distinguish between good and OK speakers, so I am quite happy with the stock set up. Plus, my car is meant for driving, not to be a mobile disco.

Host: Earlier you mentioned that your Thar whistles. Is that still happening?

Tilt: Did I not mention just a minute ago that I have some hearing loss?

Host: What about the bent alloys and vibration?

Tilt: Those are gone. Wheel alignment and balancing removed the vibration and the service centre “convinced” me that the wheels are not bent.

Host: But what about suspension? Thar’s ride quality is so bad, no? Do you want to become scrambled eggs? Avo/Arka have very good suspension upgrade and your friends have installed it and are all praise, no?

Tilt: My friends have sophisticated bums that can differentiate between good and “bad” suspension. My bum can only perform two functions and it does those very well. So I have not changed the suspension. Maybe when my existing suspension decides to commit harakiri I shall replace it with this.

Host: What about long-distance touring - does your wife not find it uncomfortable?

Tilt: Well, between this and walking, I believe my wife prefers this. She has learnt to adapt and be comfortable. But wild horses cannot drag her into the back seats. People I do not like much will be invited to sit in the back-seats. Would you like to sit in the back?

Host: Heheheheheh no, thank you. What about fuel consumption?

Tilt: Well, Thar is Harischandra’s neighbour.

Host: Huh?

Tilt: Well, it does lie, but only a little. It says I get 14.5 kms to a litre when I actually get 12.5. In contrast, my old Jetta has only read about Harishchandra in books. It used to tell me I got 17 and 18 when I got 13.

Host: Please tell our viewers about where you get your Thar serviced.

Tilt: I am very happy with the service provided by Sireesh Auto in Magadi Road. They have been very helpful, and have always looked after my Thar well.

Host: Coming back to touring, what about luggage?

Tilt: Yes, we like changing clothes every day, so we need to carry luggage.

Host: No no, you cannot carry much, no? So, have you installed the tilt-and-tumble seat modification?

Tilt: No. A friend of mine has, and I find that it not only rattles, but looks as professional as though I made it myself with my own two hands and spit. And I am good at Tetris and jigsaw puzzles, so I am able to pack enough and carry enough.

Host: What about armrest in the front?

Tilt: I found one fabricator in Bangalore who made a Scorpio-style armrest that attaches to the seats; but they were not good either - they had to reinstalled very low as to not interfere with the lumbar-support knob; and also looked as professional as the tilt-and-tumble rear seat I mentioned earlier. So, still no armrest.

Host: Anything I ask, you say you have not done. Why do you even have a Thar?

Tilt: I don’t have money. I need to buy a house to park my Thar, remember? Right now I am borrowing space from a relative.

Host: Thank you Mr. Tilt, for being on our show, and I and my viewers wish you many happy miles.

Tilt: Thank you for having me, it was (long pause) an interview.

Host (to camera): So friends, I hope you enjoyed the video. If you did, please like, comment and subscribe. Next time I promise you I shall have a more entertaining guest.

Oh what a lovely funny post to read on an otherwise miserable Monday!
Well done Tilt! Beautifully articulated. The dark full blooded satire will surely be lost on most of those ‘hosts’ many of whom prefer talking to listening while interviewing others and anyway, have the attention span of a mentally deficient goldfish.

Re: Useless cupholders | YATOR (Yet Another Thar Ownership Review)

Ayy lmao this is beautiful. But you forgot to mention those cringe words "Thar ka roub hai jajba hai rutba hai tashan hai" because 99% owners never bought it for offroading.

And you forgot to say "ye bahut luggzury hai"
You didn't even even take it to Kowloon bhaiya's shop for awozoom "German-made" chinese foglights

Re: Useless cupholders | YATOR (Yet Another Thar Ownership Review)

That was a good one @tilt.
That resonates so well, in fact some of the accessories and there use(or lack of it!) is so stark, I wonder why they caught on in the first place - form over function, I guess.
The fog lights and those eye blinding after market headlight upgrades should be the first to go (I would have said crash guards but thankfully the MVD has clamped down on those). I'm sure the OEM would have chosen them catering for the optimum throw and brightness of the factory fitted lights, as they are safety issues both if underperforming (for user) or overperforming (for other road users).
Lovely read and valuable lessons to be learnt from this post!

BTW, my friend's tilt-&-tumble seats do NOT rattle. I said this in jest. In case anyone here got dissuaded from this mod because of what I said, please get in touch with people who have done this and ask them for their opinion.

Cheers

After I read your "interview", the first 3 sentences reminded me of a Thar ownership review that i had read a year ago - "eloquent flatulences" and "bear shit in the woods", glad to see your former self back again!

Nothing to write hoe about, life just goes on

Car has done about 60,000 kms until now, broadly been a trouble-free existence.

I need to get my brake pads and shoes checked. No specific issue, just that 60K clicks done.

Tyres still have around 3mm tread left, but maybe I shall change them too.

Sorry for an anti-climactic update, but I am from the school of "No news, is good news".

Basically I am still happy with the car.

Cheers

Well one update:

Completed the 60,000 km service. Front brake pads were rated to last only another 2,000 kms, so had them replaced. Rear brake shoes are still fine.

60,000 kms for OEM brake pads is not bad in my opinion. But holds no candle to my erstwhile Jetta, whose brake pads lasted 95,000 kms.

Tyres still on OEM Ceat Czars and would need replacement in, say, 5,000 kms or so.

Cheers
