Re: My 2020 Mahindra Thar Review (Mystic Copper)!

Has been 4 months since I took my Thar on a log road trip. It has been going on short city runs only lately, and as expected, last week, I started getting the "DPF REGN" message. It would come on after about 10 minutes of running. It is stage 1 message, where the REGEN message stays constantly lit once it comes on. I believe, at stage 2 it starts blinking and at stage 3, the vehicle would not start.

I put off regeneration for a few days, as it has been hectic at work. Today I finally got around to it, and made my way through the Menu to the REGEN option and started the regeneration process. The engine started running at 2000 rpm for about 2 minutes and then it moved up to 2500 rpm for about 6-7 minutes and then it was done! The REGEN light went off. Although M&M says it may take 30 - 40 minutes, it was all done in 10 minutes. So it may be that my vehicle did not yet have too much clogging yet.

Re: My 2020 Mahindra Thar Review (Mystic Copper)!

Equipped my Thar with Full underbody cladding from Prad last month. Chose the Steel for the main part in the front, and aluminum for the fuel tank guard and DEF tank Guard. Also, fitted the 7 slat grill with matt Aluminum finish for the headlamp ring and billets from Azad 4X4. They did a good job of color matching with the mystic copper vehicle color. Terratigers Chennai helped install all this in just a matter of a few hours.

Went on a fun off-road event with Terratigers earlier in the month. The event was held close to the Koraikuppam beach 1.5 hours north of Chennai, in a terrain with many sand dunes, steep slopes and large pits. The Thar performed very well despite my relative inexperience in off-roading. Had to be pulled out a couple of times, as too less or too much accelerator input got me bogged down in the sand a few times. Was great fun to try going up some really steep slopes and pulling the car out of some deep pits. Terratigers staff and volunteers were great, to make sure we starters had a great experience.

Re: My 2020 Mahindra Thar Review (Mystic Copper)!

The Thar has been doing great through the last few months. Driving is less as have not had a chance to do long outstation trips. On city drives, the drive is butter smooth and feels majestic. There has been a lot of road work going on lately near my house and I find it easy to navigate boulders and sand piled everywhere, while the neighbours fear to tread with their sedans and crossovers.

Decided to get the reverse camera and front grill cladding installed, as after the replacement of the stock grill with the 7-slat grill, the front looks a little bland as the Mahindra logo in Chrome is now gone.

The work took 2 days and I am glad I went for the standard rear camera accessory from M&M - Should have actually done this a lot earlier. The image quality is quite decent and visibility in the night is also quite good. The icing on the cake is that it costs so less - Barely 3K and even comes with a warranty! The installation seems very professional as there is no additional rattles or sounds coming from the car for having done the installation work.

The grill spoiler was a different story though. First off, it costs a stiff amount for just a plastic part (more than Rs. 4K). Sure it looks good and lends some great character to the car. In fact I love the way the color combination of the shiny black spoiler working with the mystic copper color of my Thar. See pic below:

My 2020 Mahindra Thar Review (Mystic Copper)!-thar.jpeg

However, the part is simply taped on to the grill with double sided tape. I took the car out for a drive the next day to IIIT Sri City. After clearing the outskirts of the city in about an hour, one needs to drive for about 40 KMs on the Chennai Nellore highway. It is a very good road except for some work going on in certain stretches. I was doing about 100 KPH on one of the nice sections and heard a sudden noise! The cladding had ripped apart from the grill and hit with a loud thud on the front windshield, and then bounced off and landed on the bonnet.

I immediately reduced speed. The sticky side had landed on the bonnet and luckily it stuck on to the bonnet as I had rapidly reduced speed. I was able to safely pull the car over to the side and retrieve the piece. Luckily there was no damage to the windscreen. Had the part bounced over to the next lane, it could have hit a two wheeler driver causing a dangerous accident. Had it simply flown off, I would have lost the > 4K invested as there would be simply no safe way to retrieve it on a busy highway.

Sent the car again back to the dealership and they assured me that this time it had been fixed with extra adhesive and will not come off during fast drives. However, I think this is a serious flaw in the design of one of their official accessories that M&M should look into seriously. Followers of the main Thar thread would have heard about the latches in the initial batches of the Thar breaking off at high speeds and the whole bonnet flipping over and hitting the windshield. Such is the force of wind shear on the front edge due to the boxy shape of the car and non-aerodynamic aspect of the 90-degree edge formed there.

Re: My 2020 Mahindra Thar Review (Mystic Copper)!

A quick update on my Thar. It has clocked a little over 12,500 kms at this point have completed the second year service. Running is low as I recently got a BMW for long distance drives and the Thar is primarily used only for short city commutes. Off-roading trips are also very infrequent - want to try and go more often in the coming months to off-road drives. Closed the 2-year lease I had on the car through my company and bought over the car at end of lease.

The vehicle has been absolutely bulletproof in reliability department and almost completely trouble-free. The chassis does not make a single creak or squeak even on rough roads. The old problem - where the plastic ring stuck on the front A/C vent gives off a vibrating sound when accelerating hard, persists in spite of the dealership checking it and saying nothing is wrong. But other than this, the car is totally rattle free. Despite short city trips as the only outings the car gets, DPF clogging issue has not come up other than just once about 4-5 months ago, that was easily resolved through "Park Regeneration" that I initiated.

Reverse camera (M2All accessory) procured and installed through the Mahindra dealership has been one of the best VFM accessories I have ever purchased in life. For a little over Rs.3000, it provides a bug free and fairly clear rear image and is fully integrated into the gearbox - turns on instantly when I engage the Reverse gear, and the image is clearer than many OEM rear cameras, such as the one we have in the last generation Camry hybrid in our family.

The Black "Mahindra" cladding strip on the front Grill has stayed stuck after my last update, despite a few highway drives at reasonably good speeds. This is a relief as it means that tape that the dealership used the second time around is far stronger.

A minor problem I am facing is that the gear shift knob seems to have gotten a bit loose and I can rock it back and forth a little bit with just a touch. Need to get this checked out during the next service. Alos the leather used on the gear shift knob is starting to show signs of wear and I hope it does not develop a tear in the future. The piano black around the gear knob is also developed a lot of scratches. The similar piano black surfaces on my 2013 Ecosport never developed scratches despite long use - so I guess the material used by M&M is not very high quality there.

I am using this car as my daily driver for my 7 km round trip from home to office and back. The majestic ride height and bold looks ensure I get right of way in many situations where I would struggle with my BMW. My brand new M340i gets fewer appreciative looks and thumbs-ups than my 28 month old Thar! This car is a perfect city vehicle, easy to maneuver and park, push your way through traffic and the massive claddings on all sides make sure that even if there are minor rubs with other vehicles, nothing happens to the paintwork or body panels.

The fuel efficiency in such short drives, with start-stop traffic, is poor as one would expect and hovers around 7 to 8 KPL. But when I am able to take a longer city drive of 15 to 20 km, the FE goes up to close to 10 KPL. A few Highway drives saw between 12 and 15 kpl depending on speed.

Purchased extended warranty for Year 4 from the local dealership, it cost Rs. 16,500. It is possible to buy 5th year warranty alos, but this can be done prior to expiry of the full regular warranty, decided to defer it as the vehicle seems quite reliable.

Have not added any further accessories, though the following are on wish-list:
  • Front and Rear Arm-rests from M2All. Rear armrests are always out of stock! The front arm-rest seems functional, but it looks like it will eat away both the cup holders. What does one then do with that Starbucks coffee cup on long drives? So having second thoughts about this item.
  • AVO suspension recommended by BHP-ian Shankar Balan. Seems to be a high value investment given I use the Thar every day! The cost works out to around Rs. 1.1 lah, based on the quote I got from them. Mulling over this one.
  • Wrangler-style LED headlamps. There are so many alternatives but they all seems to have flaws - either tampering with factory electric circuitry or emitting too much of a glare. Thar owners, please recommend high quality alternatives on this one.
  • Sound system upgrade. A must if I have to go back to taking some of the long trips on the Thar. During the rainy season, I will not be able to use my sedan to go to the hills and will need to take the Thar. The long 8 hour drive each way begs for some high quality music played over a high quality system, and the Thar’s audio system is far from that.

Re: My 2020 Mahindra Thar Review (Mystic Copper)!

Thar is a great option. A reliable, drool worthy car that is ideal if the predominant usage is for city or short trips by two people and 1-2 kids.
My brother just got one and I can't wait to get behind it.

Re: My 2020 Mahindra Thar Review (Mystic Copper)!

Mahindra discontinuing the Mystic Copper shade has made Thars in this Color a true rarity. It did not sell a whole lot of pieces in the first place as most of the Thars I saw in 2021 were Black, Grey, Red in that order of commonality. One could spot an odd Acquamarine or Rocky Beige here and there and even fewer Mystic Copper ones. Around mid-2022, Mahindra discontinued the Rocky Beige and Mystic Copper probably due to low volumes. This meant these Colors became even rarer even as the number of Thars on the road skyrocketed. These days I see a black or Grey Thar on the streets of Chennai almost as commonly as I see a Jeep Compass, it is simply ubiquitous! However I would see a Mystic Copper, other than my own, once a month or so if that!

The Mystic Copper shade is a funny one. In many light conditions it looks more Reddish or Orangeish than Brownish. But when the light is not too much and not too little, like at dusk time, the Color comes on its own and looks sublime!

Re: My 2020 Mahindra Thar Review (Mystic Copper)!

After nearly 4 fantastic years of trouble free ownership, sold the Thar on Spinny yesterday, to make room for the Thar Roxx MX3 P AT in Stealth Black, which has already arrived at the dealer yard. Going to miss the awesome, butter-smooth and effortless mHawk diesel engine, paired with the seamless 6-speed Aisin torque converter transmission - a match made in heaven. But eagerly looking forward to experience the even more powerful mStallion, with 175 HP and 380 NM, which will hopefully make up for it.

I paid around Rs. 17 lakhs on-road for the Thar 3 door in December 2020. The surprising thing is that after nearly 4 years, for just Rs. 1 lakh more, I am getting a car that has got:

  • 40% morepower
  • 25% more torque
  • Two additional doors and a much more spacious second row
  • Reclining rear seats
  • 6 airbags instead of 2
  • 5 star safety instead of 4 star (BNCAP)
  • Huge amount of additional boot space
  • Wireless Android Auto
  • Wireless charger
  • Push button start
  • Rear disc brakes instead of drum brakes
  • LED headlamps instead of halogen
  • A proper metal top instead of fiber top
  • Rear washer/wiper and defogger
  • Micro hybrid tech with engine start-stop
  • Useable, retractable driver armrest
  • Electric.power steering instead of hydraulic
  • 10.25 inch touchscreen ICE instead of 7 inch
  • ..and many other smaller net-new features

All I lose is Alloy wheels, fog lamps, 4WD and TPMS, the first two can be added for 60K. As for 4WD, I have not had a chance to use it a lot, other than a few organized offroad drive events by Terra Tigers,. But I did come back with loose bumpers, paint scrapes and scratches from some of them, which I had to spend money to fix subsequently. Probably better to invest in a cheap used 1st Gen Thar or Jimny for 4x4 duties. I think will miss more, the feeling of having a 4WD, than the actual use of it.

Although I have a 4WD top-end Diesel Roxx in Nebula Blue booked with delivery expected next May, the pricing is way too high. At nearly 29 lakh on road, it does not make any sense in terms of value for money at that price point. You are paying luxury vehicle prices, but getting a utility vehicle with a skin-level pretence of luxury, when you go to AX7L 4WD territory on the Roxx. MX3 P AT is crazy value for money from Mahindra, which tipped the scales for me to go for this variant.

I got back 70% if the purchase price of theThar 3-Door, after nearly 4 years of ownership! This speaks to why it is great to buy M&M SUVs at launch. Though there is a possibility of small niggles, you get the car at a low launch price, which will go up a lot subsequently. So when you are ready to sell the car, you stand to get a much better sale price realization.

Selling through Spinny was a very semelss process. Spinny quoted a reasonable amount upfront on the App and increased it by around 20K during the subsequent phone call with the agent. Inspection was done as scheduled and after about 30-45 minutes of document e-signatures and various Aadhar verifications etc., the money was credited to my account and the pick-up person drove the car away into the sunset!

Bye Bye Thar and Welcome, Roxx!
