Re: A tryst with Sheer Driving Pleasure - My BMW X1 xDrive 20d M-Sport

Was at the BMW showroom in Mumbai last week. The updates I have are:

On the X1 - The brochure on their website already talks about the touchscreen though the showroom models dont have them. Was told that those models will start getting manufactured early Jan, and will be with dealers by end of Jan. From what I know, the X1 will not be getting the instrument cluster that the 3 and the GT are getting.

On the GT - Touchscreen and MID are already available, though it appears like the MID is an option. The MID versions are more expensive by a lakh if I remember correctly.

Got my second service done yesterday. The vehicle has competed ~20K kms. Problems reported from the vehicle-none. A minor squeaky noise from the front driver side window. The same was corrected with some lubrication. Servicing included - Air filter change, oil filter and AC filter change, engine oil change. Overall cost of service Rs 26.5K. Additionally, I renewed the warranty with an additional 2 year warranty and repair package that cost me Rs 74.5k.
One strange problem I faced yesterday. Since my voice command was not working, I checked if it was a phone or a car issue. I paired Another iPhone and the voice command worked fine . So I removed the pairing of my iPhone X from the car and when I tried adding it back it is not connecting. I tried multiple times, while it is detecting the BMW Bluetooth code, phone is unable to pair. Has anyone else faced a similar issue?whats the solution?

Managed to figure out how to pair the iPhone. Now the voice command is working fine.

What was the way you figured out?

Even my BMW sometimes acts up by not connecting to my phone. The iDrive doesn't show Bluetooth as an option unless the car is restarted.

Re: A tryst with Sheer Driving Pleasure - My BMW X1 xDrive 20d M-Sport

I was just exploring/enquiring about the XI and the different models with different dealers here in Bangalore. While i have read on this forum that a reverse camera now exists on all X1 models, the SA told me that there is no reverse camera on any of the models. I have not checked it out physically yet but read the brochure on the BMW website and it says there is a reverse camera on all X1 models. Not sure what the truth is. Anyone here with experience on the 2018 models?

What the spec sheet online says is right most of the time. Everything listed there will be present on the car, unless the car is an older year model. Sometimes the spec sheets miss out on 1-2 features, but I've never seen a feature listed which wasn't present.

I test drove the sDrive xLine variant last week, and it did have a reverse camera.

Hi,
Planning to get my new X1 MSport next month. Most likely that I would use the X1 for 5 years (50k+ km). My driving style is 'sedate' with 80% city driving & the rest on highways. This is my first step into the BMW world & was earlier used to good old Toyota (Fortuner). Hence am worried about maintenance costs!!

The BSI Basic costs 1.47 Lacs for 5yr-60k km while the BSI+ is 3.18 Lacs. Am already buying the Extended Warranty (4yrs). Should I get the BSI Basic or the Plus?

Just thinking out aloud:
I hear the usual X1 service costs 25k to 30k, so paying 1.47lacs for 5 year (BSI Basic) is like paying upfront for 5 services? - With the added benefit of savings for inflationary swings. (with the Rupee depreciating?).
Probably would be good to get the BSI Basic & start a Recurring Deposit for Rs.3k per month for 4 years so this will take care of the Brakepads-discs & other expenses incurred typically in the 4th year on-wards?
(I replaced my AT Fortuner's pads in the 4th year at 40k km so can expect something similar with the X1?)

Any advice would be definitely appreciated.
Thank you,
AJ

Hi I have been driving my X1 for a over 2 years now and experience has been nothing less than a charm. I completed my second service after 2 years and the Overall cost of service was Rs 26.5K. I spent Rs 16K for the first service. Additionally, I renewed the warranty with an additional 2 year warranty and repair package that cost me Rs 74.5k. My overall running is less than 10K kms per year and hence to me it did not make sense to get to a 5 year BSI and spend close to 1.5L upfront. My view is that if your drive is around 10K mark for a year you could just look at getting the extended warranty and sAve the money. Full BSI may not be necessary.

Thanks a Ton!! Your experience really helps make my decision. Guess I will go in for the 4 yr Extended Warranty (Rs. 73k) & drop the BSI plans.

As an aside - Do you feel the need to have front parking sensors? Are these available for the X1?
Regards,
AJ

My X1 does not have front parking sensors. I have not missed these though. I think the new 2018 X1 also does not have front parking sensors. You won't miss it though

I drive the previous generation X1 and to be honest the bsi felt more like a scam to me for that price. I don't think the basic covers anything more than oil change and filter changes etc... Which are not too expensive to change anyways. I have driven about 55k kms in a little over 3 years and all i did was get extended warranty for an additional 3 years at the end of the 2nd year (75k).

The car has gone through 4 periodic services which cost me less than 90k total. Brake pads both front and rear were changed around the 35k and 40k kms mark which i think cost about 50k( dont remember exactly). The idrive shows the next service due in 7k kms.. And brake pads have about 30k kms plus according to it. Infact my last oil change cost me only 14k because the dealer had some discount on oil.

You are likely to spend more on insurance renewal and tyre changes than anything else. Best to invest that money elsewhere in preparation for that.

Appreciate the feedback, ZD. Your 3 year+ cost summary & the OP's 2 yr+ cost summary really paints a very accurate picture of the maintenance costs involved. Looks like getting the extended warranty for my car use duration (5yrs) seems to be the best bet. Is it better to get this at the time of car purchase? Currently its at 1.43 Lacs for 5yrs (including the first 2 yrs). I guess this keeps going up subsequently? (Considering you got the same thing for 75k).

Thanks,
AJ

OP, Just curious how much was the insurance you paid as well each year? What about that? How much was it ? which one did you opt for and Zero Dep., or not?
I think that should be included in the ownership cost.

I can tell you about the quote for the 1st year, I have received:
(Zero dep/Return to Invoice/etc) BMW (Bajaj Alliance) Insurance - Rs. 93k (on Vehicle ExShroom price - 37Lacs). (This is without transfer of NCB).

Thanks,
AJ
