Especially, in the case of AT cars with high mileage.

Problems with the transmission can be expensive to fix, due to complete dependency of the official service centers.

For the price, refer to the Blue Book, carwale etc for some rough numbers.

However, 5 Lakh is way too low for a 4 year old CRV.
My CRV is 4 years old, is the same trim and there is no way I am selling it for 5L. I would expect at least 15L from dealers and more from private parties.

Re: Dilemma on buying a used Honda CR-V 2.4 AT 4WD

First thing to consider is that the car has done 70k kms, closing in on some pretty major routing maintenance as well as expensive maintenance based on wear and tear like suspension elements. The very fact that only 2 tyres were recently changed, proves how tightly budgeted the maintenance of this car has been. It is hard to find a Japanese motor which is in poor shape after just 70k kms because most can run trouble free even upto 2 lac kms. Suspension, driveshaft, steering elements on the other hand need a proper test drive to be judged accurately and without being able to do so, plus given the clear display of lack of any preventive maintenance, I would subtract 1.5-2 lacs from my budget to buy the car and then offer based on what I am willing to pay. 10.5 lacs would be my offer even if it may seem low, the fact that it is a bid that is closed only to company employees and the fact that there are still many expensive unknowns, I feel that a 10.5-11.5 lac offer is the safest bet.

Re: Dilemma on buying a used Honda CR-V 2.4 AT 4WD

A fairly incompetent 4WD system + Low fuel efficiency + Lack of butch looks ====> This is what most of the market focuses on, when looking at this car.
This translates into a low resale price. Offer about 8-9 lakhs and you would have a good chance of winning the bid.

Most people neglect that it is a very comfortable car to own and drive, and therein lies your opportunity.

Honda CR-V : Driven

I was trying to upload a picture but couldn't :( . Recently on a highway trip with just slight moderate easy relaxed driving and good use of cruise control I was able to better the ARAI mileage of my Honda CR-V 2.4 AT . The ARAI mileage figures show 12 but I was able to extract 12.7 as per the MID. If I had been driving at 60-80 I would've extracted maybe more but I was doing about 100-120 just with cruise.

2013 Honda CRV

My brother picked up the 2013 Honda CR-V 2.4 AT AWD for Rs. 9.5 Lakhs, with 47000 kms on the clock.

Driven : 4th-gen Honda CR-V (2013)-20240804_111926.jpg

Driven : 4th-gen Honda CR-V (2013)-20240804_090442.jpg

PROS:

- Honda SUV (Rs. 30 Lakhs on road in 2013) for hatchback money
- Long feature list makes this car contemporary even in 2024.
- Proper SUV feel. You climb into the car and sit high.
- Sprightly lag free performance. No turbo wurbo concept here.
- Compact dimensions at 4.55 metres length. That's Honda City size.
- All wheel drive!

CONS:

- Looks odd from certain angles (eg: rear 3 quaters)
- Fuel economy of 6 kmpl in Bangalore city
- Some missing features like keyless entry, engine start/stop, auto dimming mirror, boot cover etc
- Rear seat is slightly upright and recline angle is not adjustable.
- Spare part availability might be iffy. Was not a big seller.
- Leg operated parking brake is a bad idea!

Front end is quite pretty. Headlights are projector HIDs and is equipped with headlamp washers:

Driven : 4th-gen Honda CR-V (2013)-20240804_110451.jpg

Rear looks weird because of oddly shaped rear windscreen & XXL sized tail lamps:

Driven : 4th-gen Honda CR-V (2013)-20240804_090458.jpg

The previous owner had taken the AWD badge seriously and equipped it with Yokohama Geolandar All Terrain tyres. Thanks to thick sidewalls (225/65 R17), CR-V does well over broken roads.

Re: 2013 Honda CRV

Interiors are pleasant, but there are no soft touch plastics or leather inserts. Dashboard mounted gear lever falls perfectly in hand. There is no 'open area' to keep the smartphone though. The touchscreen head unit is aftermarket (android auto/apple carplay, reversing camera with guidelines etc). Long feature list includes driver side electric seat adjustment, driver & passenger side temperature control, leather seats, 6 airbags and traction control/ESP.

Driven : 4th-gen Honda CR-V (2013)-20240804_091045.jpg

The steering is a size or two smaller, which adds to the sporty feel. The EPS feels like that of Honda City's. It is heavier than that of typical Hyundai but is still not weighty enough for my liking. Turn-in is a little slower than a Honda City. The gauge cluster is good looking and letters & numbers are clearly legible. Don't miss the paddle shifters and cruise control:

Driven : 4th-gen Honda CR-V (2013)-20240804_091340.jpg

The foot operated parking brake is a bad idea. It is above the foot rest and might probably cause left foot injury in case of an accident. It is not at all intuitive to use. It gets worse in stop-go-stop traffic on an incline. Although CR-V is equipped with hill hold function, you will roll back if you don't step on the accelerator within a couple of seconds.

Driven : 4th-gen Honda CR-V (2013)-20240804_092008.jpg

The rear looks roomy but I feel the seat is slightly upright. There is no recline function either:

Driven : 4th-gen Honda CR-V (2013)-20240804_091027.jpg

But on the plus side, the seats are soft and cushiony and the floor is flat. Do not miss the large windows & sunroof, which makes the cabin airy. The rear seat is wide enough to accomodate 3 adults. The middle row occupant gets a 3 point seatbelt and headrest too. And the seats do the flippy thing to achieve flat floor:

Driven : 4th-gen Honda CR-V (2013)-20240804_092759.jpg

The boot is ultra roomy and it also holds a full-sized alloy wheel underneath:

Driven : 4th-gen Honda CR-V (2013)-20240804_090733.jpg

6 kmpl is bad, but you are rewarded with smooth, rapid & relentless lag free acceleration. Big naturally aspirated petrol engine + 190 BHP at work here:

Re: 2013 Honda CRV

Before purchasing the car, my brother paid Rs. 230 to Cars24 and got the entire service history of the car.

For those looking for great pre-owned deals, 3rd gen Honda CR-V should be in the shortlist, especially if you intend to use the car sparingly or if fuel economy is not a major concern. You get a reliable feature rich powerful AWD SUV for Ignis/Swift money.

Re: Driven : 4th-gen Honda CR-V (2013)

These Honda's are really nice vehicles. What I like is the ease with which you can use the CR-V within the city as well as on the highway. Reliability is also of a high order. 47,000 kms is nothing for this engine. Wish your brother many miles of happy driving in a "proper Honda"

Nice pick, congrats!

Any thoughts on the diesel CR-V? I know it's a small 1.6L mill and this model probably sold in very small numbers (was in the market only for a year or two) but it was a 7-seater and a great all-rounder from what I remember...

Was considering buying one pre-owned if I can get one...

Carwale.com has no listings for Bangalore. But Mumbai has a few listings and the asking price for 5th gen CRV is around Rs. 20L. Bangalore will have atleast Rs. 1 Lakh to 2 Lakh premium.

Many congratulations to your brother on acquiring one of the best crossovers that had almost started the segment a decade or two ago, Getting high quality cars with good safety under 30 lakhs has become a challenge, In my opinion XUV7OO and Safari/Harrier are the only options here and they do come with some issues, Almost every manufacturer is bringing watered down India specific cars or CBUs, CKDs numbers for non luxury marques are reducing by the day and most of us enthusiasts on a budget have to cling on to these high quality CKDs available in the pre owned market, good to see a fellow enthusiast being able to procure a nice example!

Re: Driven : 4th-gen Honda CR-V (2013)

Fantastic car. I came pretty close to purchase this vehicle via pre-owned route twice but I just couldn't go ahead with that abysmal 5-6kmpl mileage in peak traffic. Those with lower commute can definately look for this car especially now as prices in MH and GJ for 2013-14 hover around 6-7 Lakh. Only other vehicle that comes close to this is Tucson.

Not easy to get one due to very low sales and a short duration of availability. Whatever is available is likely to be not VFM on account of being a very recent model and inventory being with dealers, as opposed to direct owner sale.

If you get one though, it would be a wonderful buy and a rare one too.

If low FE is not a concern, then the Petrol CR-V is a very good buy.

Another alternative is the Tucson which again is/was a good car.

Mind it though, these both are roomy, good quality (relatively) cars that are expensive to maintain (due to costly parts) compared to common options but cheaper than the Germans. And these are Depreciation disasters

5th Gen is not VFM at present, 4th Gen will be VFM.

Compared to MH prices, SmartCat's brother has paid the premium of about 1-1.5Ls. But then it should be ok given that he has picked a quality car with known service history.

First of all congrats! your brother has bought one of the finest crossovers available in that price category.

This is an amazing car, and I have always toyed the idea of buying a crossover which was sold in india in less numbers. So, when my uncle was searching for a good used crossover under 15 lakhs, I suggested him this, Hyundai sante fe and the older gen X-Trail. This was pre- COVID. We looked at several examples but they were all abused and without a proper service record. Then without any second thought he bought the Kia seltos and using it happily

I hope someday when I get a decent job I could buy an CRV too and enjoy all that it has to offer.

Re: Driven : 4th-gen Honda CR-V (2013)

If mileage is not a concern, isn't the MG Astor a good option for people shopping in the sub 20-lakh category?

Its a modern Car with good interiors and safety too. As long as the Chinese car tag is not an issue to the user.
I don't know about the engine life or reliability of powertrain etc.
