Hi all,
This is my first ever review on Team-Bhp.com and I must say am really looking forward to seeing it get published in the forum. I might make some mistakes since am a rookie, so please bear with me.
This a slightly delayed review as I was busy with work.

I got the new Fluidic Hyundai Verna SX model 1.6L CRDI. The color is grey and it was a shocker when I saw it. It looked absolutely stunning especially with the red tail lights and orange indicators in the ORVM.
I got the Verna in the first week of February for about 10.30 Lac on road in Rajasthan, which I feel is an alright deal comparing the likes of Chevrolet Cruze with stuffed features for 13 odd Lac. But then I was waiting for the Cruze update but it was getting too late to wait any longer. So got the Verna instead.

Things I Like abt the car:

• The 1.6L CRDI is a well refined engine
• Very less turbo lag
• Feels like the car's speedo can keep on going
• Smooth Six Speed Manual Transmission
• Rear Parking Camera video in the Rear Visor & Parking Sensors
• Spacious rear seat leg room especially compared to the Cruze
• Neat audio system with integrated bluetooth for Mp3 play, Phone calls
• Very big trunk for luggage storage
• Sturdy alloy wheels and tyres
• Fluidic design looks great and the stance the car gives when its parked is burly
• Smooth clutch lever with dead pedal
• The Steering is much much better than that of the i20, super smooth, but obviously not great in high speeds
• Noise isolation from the engine is really a class ahead
• Map lights, Reading lights
• Neatly integrated Wiper wash in front windshield
• Height adjustable seat belts
• Texture feel, carbon fibre look, on the dashboard looks cool.
• Speedo, Tacho lights are always on and it looks really neat.
• Cable to connect iPhone or iPod to the music system comes with the car and not as extra

Things I don't fancy:

• Steering adjustment only in height
• After a point of use, features seem less than anticipated
• Slight body roll
• Headlights are not that great as with most Hyundai cars
• No chrome in the gearbox as in i20
• No tips & tricks like in i20. In i20 Radio's region can be changed to enable RDS, Speed sensing auto door locks can be enabled using G-Scan, etc.
• No illuminated glove box
• No sunroof - seriously a let down from Hyundai
• No auto-up in driver side window; only auto down (A big turn off for me. My i20 has Auto-up)
• The paint writing in the long knobs on either side of steering to control lights and wipers look really cheap
• SX (Option) model with only leather seats, side airbags, push button keyless start is 2.50 L more than SX. Not really worth it.
• Wooden trim in the interior does not add to the appeal of the car
• No trunk-only open button in the key fob like in i20

Cheap quality knobs. Much better in Skoda's & Vw's.

Slightly sad front face. Literally having an inverted smile like front bumper






No metallic in B-Pillars. Blackened look better.




Neatly placed dials, also easy to use


As it says, AUX, iPod, iPhone connection




Steering wheel with integrated phone options, volume control, mute and source button


Space for my Rayban






Microphone for the phone option


Press to switch on/off lights. Nice touch


Standard Key Fob. Centre button is a dummy.

You mentioned that:
I thought that SX(O) is approx 70k costlier than the SX variant. Please re-verify this.

This is something new for me. i20 has this option?

Can you elaborate more on this?

Arent they on only when you have the parking/headlights on?

Also, isnt there a light in the trunk as the i20?

My dad told me that on road it costs around 2 to 2.5L more.. Probably he didnt want me to book that version then.. stupid:

Yeah in the i20 Key Fob if you press the centre trunk open button for around 3 seconds, only the trunk is unlocked. This is because its a 5 door hatchback and the Verna is a 4 door Saloon.

Initially when I bought the car I had the brochure with me. I imagined myself having a car with bluetooth controls, ABS, EBD, Rear View Camera, Parking Sensors, etc.
Now when I have the car ABS, EBD seem normal. Only special thing is the Rear View Camera and bluetooth control. So, now I miss not having a sunroof, cruise control, auto-sensing rain wipers, etc. These are not needed but then you crave for more right.. :D


Yeah it has. Even the Verna has.

The Rear View Mirror with Auto-Dim and Rear Camera all integrated.

When I test drove, the CRDI SX version, it had the gear knob with a chrome ring and it was only the petrol variant which had an all black gear knob. Looks hyundai has started using the plain black one in the CRDI too.

Sweet ride! One suggestion though- remove the sandeep hyundai sticker. its such an eyesore.

First of all congratulations on a wonderful purchase and new family member!

I laughed quite loudly at the picture of the two grown men inside! Definitely a mafia plus point! I test drove this car for my family, and even though the car was wonderful in most aspects, three grown people could not sit comfortably in the rear seat. We ended up going for the Chevvy Optra 2.0L Magnum instead.

From what I know, the CRDi in this ride is a beast. Try to keep the engine within high rev limits at least till the first engine oil change! Drive safe and thanks for the nice photo review!

Hey deepjaju, welcome to TBHP and hearty congratulations on the Fluidic Verna. It really is a treat for the eyes and one of the better looking saloons on the road.

I agree with your point about the roll. At least when looking at it on the road, I feel the roll is infact more parallel to the car's length. I mean, front-back instead of sideways. It appears when someone brakes. Is it really so? Or its just an illusion that I get due to the car's dynamics and design?

And how is the rear view from the IRVM? I feel the rear glass is a bit too narrow to give a clean view. What's your take on that?

1.6 Diesel with 6 gears and a hot looking car! What else does one need! Wishing you unlimited safe & happy "fluidic" miles with the Verna :)

Dude i did a teflon coating on the body so as to protect from scratches. I asked them to remove the sticker but they said the company used some roller based kind of sticker which when removed will remove the paint work.. So i didn't take any chances..

Does this help in any way ? Can you please explain..

About the body roll its felt mostly when cornering. The phenomenon which you are stating front-back is due to the design of the car with its angled front end when compared to the back. The back end of the car(trunk) is higher and front is lower. For comparison the steering of the i20 is literally crap. in the i20 which I use regularly the steering motor is mechanized such that when you turn slightly the steering sticks to that position for minute amount of time. While in the Verna the steering motor is designed to operate in a far more fluid manner.
When you take a U-turn the steering gradually comes back to the centre position. In the i20 it comes back in an abrupt way.

You are right! The rear view in the IRVm is obstructed by the rear seat centre head rest. But the Rear View Camera and wide viewed ORVM's make up for that minus point. Besides while driving the IRVM is used to monitor the position of other cars only respective to yours. :D

I saw a two posts asking the same thing, but anyway. So when the engine's new and hardly run, the pistons haven't been reciprocating long in their chambers. When a car engine's that new, and let's say you rev really hard, and put the pedal to the floor, and drive over 120 kmph. There's going to be super high levels of friction in your engine block, the cylinders are going to be under a lot of stress and friction due to the piston heads pretty much going berserk in there. There could be some extra wear and tear due to the fact that the piston heads are still new in the combustion chambers. The lubrication systems haven't been running that long either, so there's not going to be very efficient lubrication through the engine either.

Once the engine's run a few thousand kilometers, the engine will be revving a lot more free, which means the tolerance levels between your piston head dia's and the internal cylinder dia's a bit more free. You can rev higher then if you want, without causing any potential harm to your engine.

:D, Congratulations. Loved the picture of one/two grown men in the boot. A novel idea to compare boot space, but curious how this idea of human bodies originated? Probably might help folks who are in the business of moving bodies in boot :D.

Never noticed the sad front grill until you pointed out in your post, it does look like a sad face, very unlike Hyundai as they usually have smiling grill.

Excellent review with loads of pictures of everything. One question, what are your impressions on the boat like feeling when driven, did you felt it at all speeds and at all terrains, or was it only felt in high speeds with twists and turns on highways?

Nice review. Wish you many happy miles in it. Love the rear view mirror with integrated reverse camera, neat thing to have. The picture with the red t-shirt guy in the boot is simply hilarious. Must say that your friends are very sporty to pose for such pics :).

I felt the steering to be too sharp or should I say too responsive. So it becomes dangerous to drive this at high speeds unless you got good enough experience with this car. The body roll is noticed above mediocre speeds with roads having twists and turns. In city traffic the steering is a breeze to operate. Typical of Hyundai.
Seeing in terms of history. Most cars of Hyundai don't provide a good driving experience at high speeds because of too sensitive steering.
Hopefully the Elantra will be well defined in this criteria.
