Engine valve cover oil leak

The valve cover in my Ikon has a small leak causing oil seep. Usually I see 1 -2 drops of oil on my parking below the engine. *** has advised me to change the valve cover gasket. It costs around 3000 rupees which I think is prohibitively expensive. What could result if I let it go on? Is it DIY job? What other options? Members please share your experiences on this.

re: Engine valve cover oil leak

I did this at Metro Ford, Lingarajapuram, Bangalore for Rs. 2714. Its 2594 (Part) + Rs. 120 (Labor). This is the actual cost, not a discount figure. But then the problem cropped up after 10 years and a total odometer reading of 63663 kms. Though it is expensive for what the job really is; I still feel its better you approach the Authorized Service Center.

I do not know the after effects of the problem if you just let oil leak.

It is a DIY job if you know what you are doing but then you still need to source that part from Ford which is still going to cost you the same amount that they are charging. Also; if done at the *S* you can always go back to them if the problem shows up again in a short period of time.

Get a rubber sealant. (Available in any car spare parts shop. Its in red colored tube). Remove the old gasket carefully clean it with diesel & soup water. Know, dry it throughly and apply sealant to the inside & outside of the gasket .Put back the gasket into the valve door cover. Replace the valve door cover on the engine. Medium tight the bolts , leave it for half hour & retighten bolts a little bit. Now run the engine for some time. Once its done you can start using the car. Cost of sealant may be 150rs.

What narendra told was best try, get an RTV gasket maker, which will be around Rs.100, you clean the present gasket to get rid of oil and dry it, then apply RTV paste, on top and below, then do as he said. it worth a try, if you feel lucky you can stop leak with that Rs.100-150.

RTV is the best and most cost effective solution - I have tried this on an Esteem with great results.

re: Engine valve cover oil leak

There is an update. I went to Carnation, bannerghatta road for service a week back and they changed the valve gasket for 400 rupees + 200 labour, instead of A** quoting me 3k plus labour. lets hope for the best, keeping fingers crossed.

Hello fordday,

It has been a long time but I wanted to know if the local garage job worked fine for you. I need to get the gasket replaced for my 2005 Ikon 1.6.

Be it Ford A.S.S or an outside garage, the outcome depends on the quality of product and the process. My colleague's Ikon valve gasket was replaced at an FNG and doing well for past 20k km.

re: Engine valve cover oil leak

Need some advice with this. It's the 2.2 D4D engine on Toyota Corolla Verso. I see oil leak as in picture. There is no oil drip but looks like there is a mi ir leakage. Is this something that I need to worry about?
