Team-BHP - Windshield Scratches removal

Repair depends on the depth of the scratch. If its deep enough to be felt with your fingernail, then repair is doubtful.

Before claiming with insurance for a new windscreen, also factor in what No Claim Bonus you will loose ..

I had a similar problem which I reported a few days ago. I did check with Windshield experts. They said they only repair very very minor cracks or spots or replace windscreens. They said they can't repair scratches.

I also followed up with a lot of glass houses in Delhi. All of them said, repairing such scratches is impossible.

My last bet is buying a buffing/polishing compound from the US next week :) People have claimed some of them work magically.

I left a query on their website a couple of days ago for wiper blade marks/scratches on my windshield (have 3 ugly ones).

I do not know what I saw & heard was correct or not. But when I was at Milan Subway (Santacruz Mumbai) for getting my JVC audio at Shrinath Auto, there was an OHC standing at shop beside & a guy was rubbing the windshield with some thing and when I asked they told that he is removing the scratches from windshield and for achieving this he will be rubbing the glass for minimum 3-4 hours:Shockked:.

Now I really dont know how that worked as I did not waited that long to see the result. But I guess that was a similar to buffing.

In march I bought an Second (third to be specific) hand Hyundai Accent from Mahindra First Choice & the windshield had too many wiper scraches. In day it didn't feel at all, but at night all the red tail lights use to streatch through the scraches & I hardly had any vision.

I went to windshield experts to see if polishing can be done, but they said it doesn't worth it and I better change the glass. I didn't follow their suggestion & went to Patel Auto (goregaon) and asked them to polish my windshield & when the guy was done with 3M work, the glass was scrach less and now I don't have any problems in night.

Is it correct that after 5 years the laminated windshield looses its life and it is better to change it ?? (thats what goregaon windshield experts fello told me)

I know this is a rule for tyres but not for windscreens.The next they will say that employees wear out in five years and need to be relaced.:D

Can you tell me what product from 3m they used. i know they have a polish for painted surface. Do you have pictures of the windshield before and after the polishing? any idea how deep the scratches were? they say if you move your finger nails over the scratch and it does not stop, only those scratches , in other words not too deep ones can be removed.

Removed some fine scratches from my Scorpio's windshield yesterday (at Sparkle Car Spa, Forum Mall), by buffing.
Before taking up this job, there were 2 deep scratches, which were flanked on either side by some 10 to 12 fine scratch lines. The deep scratches could not be removed, but the fine scratches have disappeared completely. The visibility, particularly at night, has improved now.

The windshield buffing was done for Rs. 1090/-. Took around 45 minutes for them to complete the job.

Since I do not have sun protection film yet, I do not know the answer to the last query. But in my case all the scratches were on the outer surface of the windshield, therefore they worked only on the outer surface. So, even if a sun protection film was present on the inner surface, it would not have posed a problem in this case, I suppose.

"A very fine powder of ferric oxide is known as jeweler's rouge, red rouge, or simply rouge. It is used to put the final polish on metallic jewelry and lenses, and historically as a cosmetic.
Rouge cuts more slowly than some modern polishes, such as cerium(IV) oxide, but is still used in optics fabrication and by jewelers for the superior finish it can produce. When polishing gold, the rouge slightly stains the gold, which contributes to the appearance of the finished piece. Rouge is sold as a powder, paste, laced on polishing cloths, or solid bar"

we could use this as DIY glass polish.
