Lancer RPM meter malfunctioning

My lancer diesel has a peculiar problem, most times RPM meter works fine, but sometimes, it flickers and sometimes it doesnt work, as if some loose contact, But what is the remedy, it is mechanically controlled or electronically controlled, i think if its mechanical, then i can make it perfect with less cost, but if its electronic controlled then it must be at heavy price.

where do i check in the car to rectify the problem? please help

No idea about Diesel cars but in petrol cars it is controlled electrically, If I'm not wrong even in diesel cars that might be the case.
