In my case, it's unavailability of Mobil mineral in the required grade. I need a 5w40 oil. Mobil Delvac MX is available only in 15w40 in Indian markets.

And it's proven that synthetics offer superior protection and better NVH characteristics than minerals, more so in today's weather and traffic conditions.

re: All about diesel engine oils

@teefosi & DRIV3R; I know I was entering a hornets nest with my comments.

Our day to day engines do not really stress the oil to that extent. In practical terms it hardly matters. Also, how many of us are aware of engines needing to be 'opened up' prior to sale of the car, probably (near) none.

Yes, theoretically Synth is superior, but the question is is it worth the extra cost. You may be able to go mineral/semi-synth and reduce the oil change interval to half and still come out on top as far as cost is concerned.

You pay your money and take your choice!

Experts -

A question for you all -

I own an Optra Magnum 2.0 TCDi, wanted help on the EO and stuff.

Which option is better suited in the longer run (I am planning to keep the vehicle for long) amongst the two mentioned here:

1) Mobil Delvac MX - 5K change interval.

OR

2) Mobil Delvac 1 - 10K change interval.

The company mentioned oil is Elf 15W40 with an interval of 10K Kms.

Thanks for all the help !!

Delvac MX has a drain interval of 10K ++.

You might be right that the interval is 10K +, but I want to play safe with the mineral oils and have a 5K interval.

What is the interval on the Delvac 1 if it is 10K on the MX?

Thanks though.

re: All about diesel engine oils

Maruti recommends 10K KM interval for mineral oils for the diesel engines. I usually change around 7.5K KM which is also approx. 5 month interval for me. I use a cheap CI4 mineral oils (Gulf Max TD) and I can hear the blessings from the engine after I change the oil at 7.5K KM .

I'd go for Mobil Delvac MX - 5k change interval along with oil filter change

Remember, its does not matter how pure the toilet flush water is as long as you flush the toilet after use and it serves the purpose!!

Sorry for the crude analogy

Call me paranoid , I have changed the engine oil in my I20 diesel 4 times in 21000 kms!lol.

First time at 2.5k kms, then at 7.5k with Mobil delvac mx, later at 12k kms with delvac 1 fully synthetic, now at 20k with delvac 1 again!!

Sure my car engine purrs like a kitten! And does not complain all this pampering

Anand, its not a myth - synthetic oils are helpful for the upkeep of the engine in the long run especially for diesels which go through a bit more wear and tear. Synthetics are highly recommended if the service intervals are bigger ( around 10K km + ) , mineral oil sees a rapid drop in its "stickiness" beyond 6-7K kms and this becomes more pronounced if operating environment is harsher. I believe that money spent on synthetic is well spent.

From my experience if you wanna save money go for mineral with more frequent change intervals or go fully synthetic - do not go for semi-synthetics at all .

Hi Sourav, sure, that's what I understood from various sources. And swithced to Mobil Delvac 1 for the Tucson some 13000KM ago. Honestly, I do not feel any great difference, the Indian Oil Servo mineral oil that the Hyundai service centers use felt just as good - from the engine noise and engine braking point of view.

If there is a sure shot way to compare, I would love to know about it.

In fact the Servo felt just a bit more sticky, the Delvac 1 is relatively thinner - from day 1.

Not to worry. Nothing will happen.
Got 2 cars which have done 190k kms with a change interval of 7.5k ~ 10k kms. One is running with petes box.

Currently, skill & workmanship of service centers in India is pathetic. So, i strongly believe that the lesser you take it to service center, better would be for you and the car.

This is on the basis of my experience in operating a service center and owning cars.

That is true.
Can't differentiate the servo oil and delvac on feel basis.

re: All about diesel engine oils

I've just got a new Swift DZire ZDi. A Maruti service engineer recently told me that one must-do is to change engine oil every 5K. Which is the engine oil that's most recommended? And when should I shift from mineral to synthetic--10K, 20K or 30K?

Would appreciate the advice.

Mahindra advices an oil change every 20k kms for the XUV500. During first service i noticed that the oil is a mineral oil so how come it lasts for 20k kms?

Its the same for Scorpio Mhawk as well, and i believe since both share engines, the mineral oil is same. That said i have been sticking to 10K oil change interval.

re: All about diesel engine oils

Experts, if you may help -

I have planned a 5K oil change interval with Modil Delvac MX on my Optra.

Now the question that I have is, should I get the Oil Filter replaced each time that I change the Engine Oil?

Or, is it fine if I change the Oil Filter after 10K and Oil @ 5K?

Thanks for all the help on this !!

Happy Motoring !!
