Thanks for sharing the details. From the PDF you attached, this seems to be a semi-synthetic diesel engine oil meeting API CJ4 specification. This is for the first time I have seen an API CJ4 oil in India. It's quite common in the states though. Price is on higher side but then this oil must be a direct import I guess.

I'd not recommend you to do 20k km's on it though. Please change at max 12.5k km's or one year. It's not the oil quality but environment and driving conditions which mandate early oil changes in India when compared to west.

BTW, why did you not go for Mobil Delvac 1 5w40? A fully synthetic diesel engine oil, with similar viscosity index and wider temp range at less price. Not questioning your choice, just wanting to understand the perspective!

Hi all,

I have a query with regards to engine oil change for my Safari Dicor. I recently went to bosch service center here in Goa as I want to try their service just for an oil change cause I have heard a lot of good stuff about the place.So I asked the Service advisor regarding the oil change and he gave me two options:

1) Bosch 15W40-Mineral oil (approx Rs. 325/ltr)
2) Mobil Delvac 1 5W40 -Synthetic Oil (approx 850/ ltr)

According to him the interval for oil change for the mineral oil will be between 5-6K and 10-12K for the synthetic. Well so my query now is for which oil do I go?

Bosch sounds interesting cause its light on the budget and also I dont mind changing after 5k kms. But is it good for the Safari's Dicor engine?

Also what is the difference between the 15W40 and 5W40 w.r.t. the grades, what is the major difference?

15w40 is usual oil grade recommended in diesel engines.Diesel engines are less clean than gasoline engines(newer diesels are much cleaner) and one should change oil frequently i.e 5k km along with a quality oil filter.I will not waste extra money for synthetic unless your car manufacturer recommends as in the owner's manual.

:OT the MRP of Mobil Delvac MX (15W-40)on can of 5L(06/2011 Mfd) was 1565/-. & 1 got 5+1L for 1700/- that I bought last week. Had about 2L left from last time as Sierra gulps 7.5 L in one go without a burp :uncontrol.

I have, & that too on an Indica. It performs great, however it doesn't clean all that well as say the Delvac. This might be because the Devac is primarily meant for heavy vehicles where the drain intervals are longer & the detergent properties have to be a little better in engine oils formulated for use in such vehicles then.

Also try the Rimula series from Shell, they are worth a shot especially if you liked the HX6. :thumbs up

The shell rimula has almost equal if not better cleaning properties as that of delvac mx.

Guys, so how do both of you substantiate your comments ?

Not what you feel, but what is the method of comparing the properties / ability of the two oils ?

Car : Mercedes W124 E250 Diesel.
The requirements from the manual are as follows. Kindly suggest a suitable oil. Currently I am running on Mobil Delvac.

I read somewhere that for older engines, it is better to use thicker oils to prevent oil seepages.

At the moment, I am facing oil seepages of few drops per day - not worrysome now since I can live with it until the problem becomes bigger. I monitor the oil level daily and there is no preceptible fall.

@Ravindra, what does the manual say - 15w40 ? 10w30 ?
There's a wide range of oils available in the market - from CF to CI, so you should be able to get the right oil.

@Condor : Thanks for the reply. The manual leaves it to us to choose the SAE grade depending on the average ambient temperatures.
My mechanic asked to use fully synthetic without any specific reasons. However this is old gen engine and I would like to stick to the recommended oils. It is also mentioned that oils as per CCMC specifications are recommended over API specifications. I am not expert in this matter, but I was not able to find CCMC specs oil in Indian market. Any help in this matter would be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
