This is 15W40 CH4 oil. The swift VDi specifies 5W40. Would there be any issues, if we use 15W40 oil for Swift Diesel?

How do you figure out the CH4 rating for the below mentioned oils.

I don't think there will be a problem.

The second one looks to be Diesel specific. The first one seems like a petrol to me. Check the manual and see what ACEA ratings are prescribed and the first one meets them or not.

Please buy oil from brands that have their own refineries. Your average mineral oil would be better than this FS. Don't fall for such traps.
I bought 5 litres of Shell Helix HX8 5W-30 for Rs.3300. So it is Rs.660 per litre. It is written "Fully Synthetic" on the label. Is it not fully (100%) synthetic then?

Technically, these oils can be called Fully synthetic, but basically they are having more purified distillates from the good old mineral oil extraction process.

2 decade ago, I used to download MSDS from various manufacturers and try to see what percentage of Synthetic content they carry. Nowadays they are not readily available or this critical piece of information is hidden.

Have a look at some MSDS in some other language I am sharing, that are readily available.
Second search you can make is for the CAS number of the ingredient listed to see what it is.

I am with oil manufacturers on this. Why to fill 80% FS oil (20% other additives will still be needed) in passenger cars which will never race? Just label a 40% FS containing oil as FS and sell it at a higher price. They are better than mineral on a few aspects which the customer needs.

However, the newer oils need to provide better fuel efficiency and have lesser additives that are critical for protection, due to environmental reasons. Hence FS oils are used to make these thin oils equally protective and are mandated by car manufacturers.

I am happy with the mineral oil with high additive levels rather than FS oils with low additive levels. However, newer cars have no other option left as their catalytic converter cannot handle the former.

Re: All about diesel engine oils

Can anybody recommend good mineral oil for Tata Safari 2.2vtt Dicor. I am currently using Shell Helix HX5 which costed me 2000 Rs for 7.5 Liters. The performance so far is okay I would rate it neither very good nor average, the performance of this oil for Safari lies somewhere in between.

I have the same car. The best oil I used till now is mentioned few posts before.
I tried CI4 and CI4+ oil from Valvoline, HP and others, but the best one remains Mobil Delvac TM Genuine oil.

Please note, I am not getting any sponsorship from Mobil. Shell R4 is also a very good oil, I haven't tested it personally.

You can use a heavier weight mineral oil but at the cost of some fuel economy, and a light diesel engine is going to labour a bit on oil that is designed for larger diesels such as trucks and even generators. Right upto 3.2 litres in an endeavour or even the big 6.5 litre US suv engines will work perfectly well and run much more smoothly on lower weight oils.

Stick to 5w30 on your marutis and Hyundais .. if you don’t want full synthetic just get a good semi synthetic like shell helix taxi or Castrol magnatec

Re: All about diesel engine oils

I want to know whether this oil link 1can be used in a Ford Figo 1.5D. I have been using Idemitsu 5w30 oil but its drawback is that it is available in 3.5L packs and the Figo needs 3.78L of oil, making me buy additional 1L pack or asking the garage person to top up their oil. This has made me consider this oil link 1 which is available in 4L packs.

Does the dipstick show lower level when you fill in 3.5 litres? If not, then I suggest do not worry. Keep the dipstick level as yardstick.

The 1.4 CRDi of our i20 needs 5.3 litres according to manual. But 5L can is sufficient to bring the oil level on the dipstick to a bit above MAX point. I have always filled 5L only as long as I remember and there have been no issues.

Dont use Shell Helix Ultra.
With 1L kilometers done, thinking to shift away from Mahindra's engine oil. Will go by your judgement as far as oil goes and to move away (from Mahindra's engine oil or not) and what to procure, something which is available on Amazon. I still have 6 months for an oil change, still...

I came to revise my opinion substantially once I figured out that the Mahindra oil is a very decent semi synthetic 5w30. Use a good synthetic 5w30 a5b5 like shell hx8 and your Scorpio will run smoothly on it. I use it in my Endeavour and it works great. No need of mineral or overly expensive synthetic diesels. If you prefer semi synthetic use Shell Helix Taxi. Change both within or just past 10k rather than stretch to 20k km.

Thanks!

I change all oils & filters (A.C / air-filter) at ~10K. So, should continue to stick with Mahindra?

It is cheap and does the job. Give any decent 5w30 synthetic like shell hx8 a try once though. I think you will be surprised.

Re: All about diesel engine oils

I am looking for a not too expensive fully synthetic oil from Shell preferably since they can change at the bunk.
It is for my Aspire Tdci run 40k kms. It is a 2017 car and I have been changing the oil every year from the A.S.S although the car would have run less than 10k kms.
I don't want to do that going forward and instead change at every 10k kms whenever that happens, outside the A.S.S using FS oil.

The engine is re-mapped as well if that makes any difference.

I have seen the exhaust and EGR bits of a Scorpio that has run more than 1L kms on OEM oil, clean as a whistle. A thicker oil will reduce the clatter at cold start (hydraulic tappets as they say) but once the engine is warmed up, its no different.

These days even commercial vehicles like Pickups are serviced by OEM backed by warranty \ genuine parts etc , so other than specialist jobs like AC \ Alignment \ painting, stick to OEM parts \ consumables and service centers.
