Team-BHP - All about diesel engine oils

Has anyone here used the fully synthetic SN+ 5w40 oil being sold by gomechanic? I found a pretty good deal going and am tempted to use this for my upcoming oil change on my VW Passat 1.9TDI PD (VW 505.01 grade recommended) and also in my Xylo 2.5 CRDe ( 15w40 Mahindra maximile CH4/CK4 ). My understanding is 5w40 is superior to 15w 40 given both have same upper tolerances for high temp. Both vehicles are light use and dont even complete 5k kms between yearly oil change.

Not a very good oil. Also the green Maximile bottle is a 5w30 (look it up on Boodmo). They only recommend that CH4 spec oil as an alternate in case you don't have Maximile available.

Personal experience - pour any good synthetic 5w30 for the Xylo (Shell Helix Taxi semi synth or Shell HX8 5w30 full synth will be good).

And Shell Helix Ultra very much meets 505 01. In fact your 2.6 crde won't complain if it gets Shell Helix Ultra either, saves you buying two different grades of oil.

Thanks for your quick reply Suresh! Have always used 5w40 (fully synth) for my VW and 15w 40 ( mineral) for my Xylo. It's the bother of maintaining stock of 2 grades of oil + the mouth watering prices ( 3.5 lt of full synth 5w40 oil for Rs 900 ) that is driving me to check the gomechanic deal.
Both cars being less used, I was looking to this .Sludging was my biggest worry for the VW, but with less usage and annual oil change before 5k kms I thought it may not really cause any damage.
But just in case, I thought let me check on Teambhp. Learned counsel on this forum, is as always, extremely helpful.

You can just use shell helix ultra 5w40 for both the cars so that concern is gone, about maintaining stock of two different oils.

When it comes to repackers, they should be given the same noble two times!

Please buy oil from brands that have their own refineries. Your average mineral oil would be better than this FS. Don't fall for such traps.

Ha ha! I agree that the prices sound too good to be true! Trying out on my Xylo as I anyway use mineral oil. And I meticulously check the oils and if I notice anything out of the normal, will change oil. A friend tried it on his Vento TDI and he has a good word for this oil.

Hyundai recommends 0W20 ACEA C5 for Venue SX (O) 1.5 BS6 diesel. What Engine oil should I use, then? Any recommendations?

The service manual suggests 0W 30 oil will be fine as well, though Hyundai's official website only lists 0W 30.

Both are expensive so stick to the default oil Hyundai provides till such time as more oils in this spec reach the open market.

Whichever suits your pocket. For your swift good old shell helix ultra 5w40 will be excellent.

The dealer doesn't have it in stocks and online it is comparatively expensive.

The dealer is pushing for the below oil, saying it is used by benz.

The one below is also 5W40(MGDO) but, half the price of above. I couldn't get, what's the key difference between them.

The second one is a group 3 synthetic or semi synthetic I guess while the first might be fully synthetic. Petronas is a fairly OK oil manufacturer, so whatever you pick between the two it won't hurt your car. I haven't used them personally so can't comment.

Why do you need a Maruti dealer anyway for an old swift?

There is no need to buy costly oils for a 2009 Swift. Buy any good brand CH4, CI4 or CI4+ oil and enjoy.

I am using Mobil Delvac in my car, got 7.5 L for 1700 INR last year from Amazon. The prices have increased now.

Buy the previously specified oils from Shell, Total, Valvoline, Mobil, HP, Servo and you would be good.
