Motul is rated GL4/GL5. Description says more compatible for synchro mesh transmission. Its like GL4+. Tutella technyx is synthetic based, description is available on petronas website.ie synthetic based means blended? Doesn't mean its fully synthetic. Till GL4,GL4+ its only semi. GL5 is full synthetic. I'm not sure though. What i know is motul is GL4 compatible and synthetic blended. Was made in France

Ranigunj where the Agriculture Motor Pumps are sold on the main road. I saw in those shops about a year back with loads of such heavy duty oils.

Some Maruti service stations have 75W90 in stock to refill. Else ask them to order one for you. You will need to call many MASS' to find out which one has 75W90. The gears run very smooth on 75W90 so don't go for 80W90.

Where can one get Motul 75W90 and at what price? MASS is asking for Rs 1500 for Shell 75W90 (also MGGO) 2.2 lt with labor charges. They won't give retail likely because they get in bulk.

Are you sure it's Shell ? MASS has now moved to Total. Check once again for the brand.

I called two different MASS in B'lore and both of them told me it is Shell. Even two years back it was Shell at a MASS in Gurgaon. I think it is semi-synthetic not fully synthetic. Fully synthetic might have a much longer life than 40K/4 years.

Sourced it from Code6 Kochi.600 Rs/Litre. My friend's Ertiga has clocked 70k kilometers with that gear oil. He never changed gear oil after that.Still running with same gear oil. No problems

Re: Looking for 75W90 gear oil

Guys, Since I have switched my engine oil from stock to Amsoil 5w30 signature series and enjoying the drive, so planning to get gear oil change to Amsoil too.
I own a Tata Bolt Diesel car.
Manual suggest 75w80 and I think I drove to most to most of oil shops in Hyderabad and they give me surprise look suggesting I would never find that grade.
I am looking for smoother gear shift but currently it's OK and sometimes bit notchy though my car clocked 25000 Kms. Hence looking for a switch.
Only grade I could find after enough search is 75w90 full synthetic oil Amsoil.
Will switch from 75w80 to 75w90 smoothen the gear shift or worse. Manual recommends SAE semi-synthetic 75w80 grade. I have attached the manual pic.
There is no problem with gear shift but looking for possibility to make it better.

A notchy GB is mostly designed and built that way at the factory nothing you can do to change its default characteristics. A change of oil will make very little difference, if any, to notchy gear shifts.

Also, transmissions/transaxles are far more sensitive to lube oil grades than the engine. Since TM very clearly recommends a SAE 75W-80 GL4, stick to that viscosity and GL rating. Using 75W-90 may have unintended consequences including harder gear changes.

What did you finally go with 75w80 or switched to 75w90?

Sir, I thought even Engines are also sensitive to the Lube Oil grades.

Now that you mentioned the sensitive nature of Transmissions/Transaxles to Lube Oil grades, I got reminded of Hyundai recommendation of using 70W Grade Oil in our Elite i20 as per Owners Manual but Hyundai India Website recommending 75W85 Grade Oil.

I had searched on Internet for 70W Oil but could not find one.

Bharat Petroleum has MAK Spirol 80W EP Oil which I had used in our Indigo LS (IDI Engine 2004 Make) few times when the Grade recommended by Tata was EP 80 (not 80W). Then My tubelight glowed after using that Oil for few times and I switched to EP90 as EP80 was not available at that time (at least I was unable to source the oil). When I used 80W Oil, I saw that the oil was very thin as like Water.

Does the Owner's Manual I got with car is of Elite i20 sold in other countries as even HASS also uses 75W85 Oil (Dont know Brand)? I did not get the transmission oil replaced even once at HASS as I shifted to FNG after 20K (3rd free service at HASS).

I myself procure the required lubes and parts and go to my FNG for the necessary works to be carried out on our i20 and Xylo.

Now I am using Petronas Tutela 75W85 bought from 99rpm.com in our Elite i20 Asta CRDi (Mar 2015) for past 13000 Kms. The car has run 1,75,000+ Kms. But I am not fully satisfied with this Oil.

Engines will work at viscosities ranging from x-20 to x-50 while most gearboxes (MT) are in a narrow band xW-75 to xW-90.

Don't go by the SAE numbers, gear lubes and engine lubes are rated differently. Contrary to expectations 80W gear oil will be 'thin' much like a SAE 30 or 20 engine oil. For e.g. see this chart:

What I suggest is you get the manufacturer recommended lube filled in the transmission at the ASC. Gear lubes don't require changes for extended intervals (some trannys come with life time lube from the factory) so even if you are more predisposed to a FNG a single trip to a ASC once or twice in the years you own a car is not such a bad deal.
