One more thing, since you mentioned about the EGr issue, if such a faint sound is heard is that normal or I must be checking for that too

Regards
Its a vaccum actuated mechanical EGR and such faint knocking/ clicking noise is normal.

@lodhra:

Other than what Dadu said - I will also add my 2 cents:

Tubeless tires generally don't deflate instantly. It gives you time to look for the nearest puncture shop and attend to the issue. Carrying a trolley kind of jackey is an overkill - considering that you travel with family for about 4000 km and you need to carry plenty of other things on such a long journey.

I would suggest - at the risk of repeating what has been said here - to carry the following things:

1. Map of the States you will be traveling through OR a good GPS device with India map loaded.

2. A powerful Torch/Emergency light

3. Machet/Small Axe

4. Knife with at least 7 inch blade

5. Full tool kit for the car

6. Medical kit - if you take any medicine - carry enough stock to last for double your planned trip. Carry prescriptions as well.

re: The Tata Safari 2.2L Technical / Problems Thread

Had a engine failure enroute to Hyderabad, immediately after Buthpur. At about 9:30pm.

Called Tata 24x7, got prompt response but not much help. They put someone from Star Motors Jadcherla on the line, and he said he could not help as his tow truck went to Srisailam. The agent could not help arrange another tow vehicle, so had to call for a flatbed from hyderabad ( 90kms ) away.

Got prompt service from "Jai Chaitanya Crane services". Found on justdial.

Moved the vehicle to Tejaswi motors hitec city. Found that:

- The water pump failed
- Leading to timing belt breaking
- and damaging the camshafts
- and a cracked head.

Trying to get Extended warranty. Fingers crossed. 5 days for it to expire!

Question:
- What kind of expense can i expect ?
- What will the extended warranty cover ?
- If the head is replaced, does the car need to be run-in again ?
- Any thing else that should be checked ?

Hyd TBHPians : Any experience with Tejaswi motors ? any contacts I can speak to there ?

thanks
Srini

As per the page listed below, the above 4 items are included in extended warranty: Tata Motors Customer Care :: Must Know

Check the "Engine" and "Cooling System" sections under Parts Coverage.

Vikram

re: The Tata Safari 2.2L Technical / Problems Thread

Anybody know a good mechanic for a 3.0l Dicor other than TASS in Gurgaon/Delhi NCR?
My friend's upto his gills (as if) with the incompetent TASS and doesn't want to sell his Safari either. He's willing to invest in it and rid it of all problems for some times to come.

re: The Tata Safari 2.2L Technical / Problems Thread

@dadu
Went to TASS today and opened up the plastic, everything seems to be in order. He said the sound since it comes only on highways which are generally a bit up and down at high speed the noise must be of some vibration . Since the car is running fine for one year and no battery drainage electrical problem must be ruled out. He told me to go on the drive and not to worry

So happy for that

@prowler thanks you for your good advice
I already got a compressor, digital pressure guage and puncture replacement set + a flashlight cum hazard light cum hammer cum knife from rediff all for 1200rs which i thought was a good deal. I also got a steel tow rope for 800rs . I am so much toying with the idea with a 2 ton jack. Generally in my car most of the times i am alone or with wife., It is essentially a 2 people car so i wont mind puting that jack in the trunk. My only issue is that while running it must not slip and damage something inside

One more small help

1>After my 3rd service the tata guys put Mobil oil as replacement. Some exxon series. I have a spare 1/2 litre castrol GTD oil with me as GTX is not available. This i had purchased as safety some 6 months back
Can i use this to top up if oil levels go down or I need to buy similar. the one Tata put some exon 3000 series is not easily available so any replacemnts I must carry

2>with respect to coolant. I read that if coolant drops below par i must refilll with distill water and not add fresh coolant due to viscosity difference. If i need to add new , i must drain the old coolant and add new. Whats your suggestion. Should I carry coolant or only distill water

3>Should I carry ps oil and brake oil too or not

4>Most imp if all these oils bought are left unused how long they can be stored. is there an expiry

Regards

Yes, my mechanic is good in repairing Safaris, we just rebuilded my burnt engine Safari 3.0 DICOR unfortunately I live in Indore. What are the problems your friend is facing with his SUV?

re: The Tata Safari 2.2L Technical / Problems Thread

I have got a few problems with my 3.0L Safari:

1) There is ghrr-ghrr noise from the rear differential in between 1-1.5K rpm, last time I filled 200ml less differential oil is it due to that? (Standard capacity 2.2L, I filled 2L of oil)

2) The idle rpm fluctuates, mechanic told me the faulty pump problem and also told me that I can live with that without any problem, should I carry-on like this? The mileage has not changed and has been between 12-13kmpl with AC.

3) Doors have tobe closed with extra force (more than normal) what should be the problem?

re: The Tata Safari 2.2L Technical / Problems Thread

1) If its a limited slip diff then the LSD clutch is gone
2) Its fuel temperature sensor in the fuel pump. It is available separately (I think so)
3) Its a feature not a bug.

1) No mine is 4x2 moreover the sound only comes as if one is in lower gear, for e.g @60kmph the car is at 1-1.1K rpm and thus a ghrr-ghrrr noise does'nt allows me to carry-on 60kmph in 5th gear. I got the drive-shaft checked and mechanics say that it is fine.

2) Thanks, will get that checked

Something or the other always gives up in the car every fortnight. The power steering pump is working erratically, the bar between the dashboard firewall and the engine bay has developed cracks, even after clutch replacement at 105,000 kms, the vehicle won't act as if the clutch has been changed. And the list would go on if I add the small niggles we (Tata customers) have learnt to live with.
