Refer to post #72 (two posts above your post) which tells why.

There was an occasion when I almost double cranked (driving it first time, not my car, and super silent cabin even after start) only to realise it was already running - by looking at the tacho!

I guess the tacho will also enable you to gauge the speed vs. engine rpm co-relation (my driving instructor had drilled it that the ratio is speed = rpm*3/100 would be ideal). Don't know if this is really true or scientific, but is more or less what I follow.
