I have a Safari Dicor. I used to get a distinctive feel when the turbocharger used to fire around 1750 rpm.
However, I am not getting the same feel, as if the turbocharger is not getting fired.
The mileage of the vehicle also has come down.
I have mentioned the same to Concorde Motors (my usual service station in Bangalore) during the 6th (30000 km) service, and they said the turbocharger is working fine. Is there a way to crosscheck?
To give you a history they have changed the turbocharger once (under warranty), when there was a problem with oil leak, and my vehicles oil indicator didn't give me any warning.

The sudden rush along with the whistle sound is the only way for a layman to detect this, apart from it, only the service centre can tell.
Contact Psycho - he's in the original team that invented turbo chargers.

I am missing that sudden rush, that's why I am feeling it is not working...

The turbo may be spooling but the any one of the hoses going to the cooler of the the intake could have a leak or a punture.
Turbos dont fail that easily.

Easiest way to check is a boost gauge. Even I would feel that the hoses would be to blame if there is no smoke issues.

please follow this procedure:
1.open the hood
2.put the vehicle in neutral
3.start ur safari
4.get down and go near the hood
5.listen very carefully at idle speed. the turbo wont be shooting up.
6.listen the sound near the turbo very carefully and get accustomed to it for a while
7.then pull the accelerator cable with ur hand or with some hook strongly and listen to the sound
8.if u hear that hissing sound with roar then the turbo is working or else turbo has failed

I disagree. I own a '98 model and have several friends who have Safaris owning them for the last several years. Turbo failure is unheard of. There could be a minor leak in one of the hoses that is not easily detectable.
One another way to check is to remove the hose that connects to turbo, start the engine and put your hand to cover the inlet of turbo. It should try to suck your palm in as if creating vaccum.
If it does, then your turbo is fine. Problem lies elsewhere. Is your air filter choked?

Thanks Amit, I have checked the same way, I heard the hissing sound so it should be fine.
Check hoses first mate.
Turbo failures are uncommon. TATA or no TATA.
And if they fail, they will make you feel a major difference. Not a little loss of pickup and mileage.
