What gets added is a buffering agent (deactivated or buffered sulphur phosphate) that won't react with the softer metal like bronze in gearboxes that require GL4.

https://www.motul.com/us/en-US/products/motylgear-75w90

The Motul website says
Thanks for the links. This is a a little confusing from the penriteoil article: "An API GL-4 gear oil of any given viscosity has about ½ of the level of sulfur/phosphorous additive that would be in the API GL-5 product, so the bond with the metal surface inside the transmission is not as strong, and therefore can be peeled off without peeling a layer of soft metal. This means that the GL-4 product provides a little less extreme pressure protection than a GL-5 oil but less wear on synchromesh components of a transmission. When a GL-5 oil is used in a transmission with synchromesh it can create up to 4 times the amount of copper in a used oil analysis as that of a GL-4 product. Synchronisers will eventually wear to the point where they become ineffective.

That is plain gl4 vs plain gl5

Most of the gear oils on the market are dual use gl4 and gl5 now, if you see a gl4 compatibility on the bottle you should be fine.

My skepticism is from the fact that it is more viscous compared to Shell and is also GL5 compliant.
Ok, so GL4+GL5 is said to be what is referred to as a GL4+ by Liqui Moly and other manufacturers including Motul. And let me tell you from personal experience that it would be best to stick what the manufacturer recommends. Transmissions don't take kindly to wrong grades or specifications.

Do not use a GL5 in a GL4 spec tranny. If you need synthetic GL4 try Redline reputedly a very good oil via their India dealer whenever it is back in stock air90 or just stick to a new refill with Shell for now and change over to Redline next time

Since it compatible to manufacturer spec GL4, it should be fine. Could you please share your personal experience when you faced a compatibility problem?

Well, if you're comfortable using a GL4+ then you could try it out.

A GL4+ has additives that make it a GL4 with some GL5 characteristics. I tried Liqui Moly 75W-90 in my manual tranny. All worked well but I was facing issues in shifting from 2nd to 3rd occasionally. Changed over to OEM lube (about 2x more expensive) and now I am at peace.

Got.iy, what was required spec for your tranny?

I will have to go to a MASS specifically for this and I have limited time before the tour.

It either SAE 80, 75W-90 and 80W-90 with API GL4 or GL5 specs.

If you're heading off on a long journey post any oil or fluid change, including tranny, engine oil, coolant, brake fluid flush etc, make sure you have 1-2 days on hand to check for leaks before travelling.

Wow, that covers most of the oils

My plan was to have 3 days but now the delay will give me about 1.5 days to check for leaks. I will only get brake fluid and gear oil changed, rest is suspension work and AC servicing which is also I am scared of in case of leaks!

Re: Synthetic Gear Oil

I wanted to update that I bought Motul semi-synth 75W90 from flipkart and it is working fine in my Swift 2010 K Series. Instead of spending time finding the right 75W90 oil and procuring it, one could easily get the gear oil change done at MASS as well since the markup is not very high.

Re: Synthetic Gear Oil

Dear all,

The cars in family, Swift Dzire 2010 Diesel,Maruti Zen LXI 2003 Petrol (Both have run 45,000 kms) and are nearing the annual maintenance schedule. The Zen has new synthetic oil that is hardly 10 months and may be 4000 km run.

Here is the query, I want to go for a full fluid change(engine oil, coolant, brake fluid, Transmission/gear oil). The zen is primary city runabout, and Dzire is mostly for inter city runs.

What would be the best brand and product from each of the category. Also any pointers to good garage for general service (I want a full rear brake drum and front disc cleaning, radiator flush done properly). Preferably within 10 km radius of ECIL-Secunderabad area.

Thank you.

You might want to optimize on quality and cost if the cars are older.

Use GS Caltex Synthetic Engine Oil and Synthetic Gear Oil. They are awesome (meets highest standards) and value for money. BTW, you don't need an oil change if the car has run only 4K on synthetic oil. I have moved to 2 years/10K fully synthetic oil change and it has been working fine for me (I have a Swift 2010 K Series with 50K kms on odo).

If you need a contact to obtain GS Caltex, dm me.

Re: Synthetic Gear Oil

At that low level of usage the consensus is use some cheap but high quality mineral like shell hx5 or Mobil 10w40 and change every six months or 5000 km. I’m doing this in an elderly Honda city and the engine runs perfectly smooth. Gear oil - any api gl4 like Shell Spirax will suit your car just fine. Don’t forget brake / clutch fluid as well, and coolant if it has been over three years since the last change of coolant / brake fluid.

Amazon would be an easier buy given your location (I also bought it on Amazon). If you want the gear oil also (the cost would be about Rs 1500), then let me know and I will try to find out if they have distribution in your city (please share the name of the city).
