Brake dust more harmful than diesel exhaust fumes

A study by the University of Southampton has found microscopic particles emitted from certain types of commonly fitted brake pads can be more toxic than those found in diesel vehicle exhaust.

The research shows that a higher concentration of copper in some pads is associated with increased harmful effects on sensitive cells from people’s lungs, as a result of particles being breathed in.

The findings published can be viewed here: https://particleandfibretoxicology.b...89-024-00617-2

On a lighter note, hope someone does not read this and ban Brakes.

Nah. Why ban when you can tax them citing the environment issue. Brake pads = sin tax.

BTW. Is this a modern vehicle thingy or does it vary from manufacturer to manufacturer or the brake pad supplier?

Can only say from the brake dust accumalated on the alloy wheels. So depends on alloy wheel design?

Not sure about modern cars, since the Cruze also had a heavy brake dust problem. Not sure it is about weight since the Harrier changes alloy wheel colour every week, while the heavier Innova Crysta doesn't have any brake dust settling on the wheels.

It depends on brake pad friction material. Organic pads dust less. Semi metallic pads dust heavy. Ceramic pads and Ceramic-Organic hybrid pads dust the least. Heavy cars usually come with Semi metallic pads that cause the alloys to go dark in a matter of few hundred kms. Neighbors XUV7OO alloys and brake calipers are baked in brake dust. Not sure if he uses original pads or aftermarket.

There are after-market pads available that will dust less. One needs to explore a bit

The Kodiaq puts out a lot of brake dust. I was told by the SA that it will reduce after some running as the brakes are very new.
Not sure of this, but if I delay the full wash for more than a week, the alloys will be visibly black in color.

Might be true but definitely paving a way for early Euro-7? One clearly knows now that these agencies like NCAP and all these studies are not only academic in nature. All originations have vested interests.

Definitely not going to be banned but you may have to pay more taxes if you brake more

They are definitely not going to reduce after a while. The SA is just pacifying you. . You might want to explore ceramic brake pads for your Kodiaq so that you can use them during the next brake pad change. Since it is a Kodiaq, there will definitely be aftermarket options available from reputed brands. Example - Akebono

Also, the reason why many cars come with dark colored alloy wheels is to hide the brake dust. The usual silver color wheels show up dust more than the dark colored ones.

Not entirely but the Delhi government may think of banning braking on alternate days

There is a lot of wear on brake rotors these days than the pads themselves, newer materials if you see do not need the brake rotors to have slots anymore like we used to see earlier on vehicles that needed more urgent stopping power.

Also we now have lot of 'braking' done without our knowledge, like the Stability program - counteract torque steer, improve handling, brake assist, hill hold and many more before you reach the big brake eater - ADAS.

PS - An observation when I last visited Delhi during college days - all vehicles had plenty of dents all over them, I think a braking ban wont be a big deal afterall.

True. But in my obervation, even then cars like the Harrier have excessive brake dust. Compared to equally heavy cars like Innova Crysta or cars that should have more brake dust like an Octavia automatic.

Ya, this looks like another narrative that is deliberately being pushed, so that they can increase taxes on brakes, brake parts , it's imports and in after market. Nothing is going to come out of it apart from higher expenses from your average customers pocket.

Those system rarely do anything under normal driving conditions. Hill hold does not cause any brake wear as the car is at a stand still.

As our cars have become heavier and heavier, especially now with EVs, we are generating more and more brake dust per car on average.

Brake dust is an unavoidable by product of braking. Same is true for pollution due to tire wear.

Brake and tire dust are sometimes referred to as non-exhaust emissions. Its long term environmental effects and or on humans and animals is not yet fully understood. But all, the evidence points towards it being harmfull.

Re: Brake dust more harmful than diesel exhaust fumes

I had read about this many years ago and have always been wary of cleaning the wheels etc. Don't recall clearly but the dust particles get stuck inside the lungs or something if inhaled causing harm to the human body.

Cleaning with liquids, e.g, water and soap or a special brake cleaner is fine. When you wet it, there is no dust!

Has anyone else noticed a lot of brake-dust on their XUV 7OO? I have.

Do indian cars have brake pads with asbestos? India is one of the few countries where asbestos use seems to be rampant so I've always wondered about this.

EVs generate far less brake dust due to mostly relying on regen breaking. Some EVs have reportedly had brake pads last 1L km or more.
