Re: Keep or Sell my 10-year old Tata Sumo Gold?

Nothing unusual given what it is, you can sell this if you take it to the country side - you do have to drive it about 200 kms outside of Bangalore and it will sell for a decent price.

Fix the cylinder deactivation issue and the rest will be forgiven.

Might have been worth it if this was a Safari Dicor. Sumo was outdated when it launched and has no vintage value.

Re: Keep or Sell my 10-year old Tata Sumo Gold?

Since your friend has listed so many problems, is he really up to fixing all of them?

Is he ready to invest time in fixing them?

Is he ready to deal with unscrupulous garages to get bits and bobs repaired?

Is this a labour of love for him?

Is this his way of remembering his ancestors?

If and only if his/her answers to *all* of the above questions are "yes", then fix it and keep it.

Given the number of problems that you have listed, I feel it’s absolutely not worth the headache to get it in running condition. Better to sell it off. Voted for the same opinion.

Sell it: Considering the multitude of problems and the age of the vehicle, selling it might be the most practical option. However, the resale value might not be very high due to the extensive repairs needed.
Scrapping: If the repairs needed outweigh the value of the car, scrapping it might be the most practical option. You can sell it to a scrapyard or recycling center.

Re: Keep or Sell my 10-year old Tata Sumo Gold?

10 years and 75k is not a lot. If the person has emotional attachment, try getting an estimate from a good garage.

Driving a sumo is akin to driving a truck, later versions of Sumo had wider front track and hence were a little bit more stable.
The biggest issue however is the wheelbase which is similar to a Indica!

Unless the person has a good use case , its best to sell it. If he feels bad about selling this car, it can be gifted to someone needy they know personally, this way the car may get a new lease of life and the person will stay in touch with the car.

Re: Keep or Sell my 10-year old Tata Sumo Gold?

I see a lot of people have suggested to sell the car. But my question is, with so many things having gone for a toss, who in the right mind will be interested in buying it in the given condition?

So the owner will anyway have to invest some money to at least fix some critical and important things before even thinking of selling it.

So the real questions are, is the buyer willing to invest any money for the repair work at all? If yes, will he/she be able to recover that amount by selling it at a higher price? Will he be able to find a buyer at all?

I think unless there is some emotional connect with the vehicle, the owner should really just think of selling it off (without wasting any money on it) to whoever he finds and at whatever price it gets!!

P.S. There should be a third option in the poll to "Scrap/Junk it".

Re: Keep or Sell my 10-year old Tata Sumo Gold?

Thanks for all the replies BHpians!

From all the feedback the general questions I can gather are these:

1) Is he emotionally attached to the vehicle?
Ans. A big NO.

2) Is he ready to spend time working on it with the necessary budget?
Ans. YES, but ONLY if he finds a good and reliable FNG.

3) Does someone want the car?
Ans. YES, many people are asking for it including a fellow BHpian.

Overall, right now Hondasamarth12 is more inclined towards selling it and making peace with the Ecosport owned by his extended family. Would like to thank all the BHpians for their feedback . More suggestions are always welcome and looking forward to them.
