The best sounding naturally-aspirated engines

Dears,

Here in Dubai, there is a guy who has a Ferrari and every morning, he starts it up. Its a V8 but a Ferrari V8 sounds so very different to other V8s. Doesn't have that heavy burble that a V8 usually has. And has a most lovely sound. It's a pleasure to hear it every morning. This got me thinking on what could possible be the best sounding engines out there.

My personal favourites:

180 degree Ferrari V12 from the Ferrari Testarossa/512
Ferrari V8 from the Ferrari 360/430
BMW NA inline 6
Lamborghini V10
Porsche boxer 6
BMW F1 V10

re: The best sounding naturally-aspirated engines

How about we turn this thread into one where people mention their favourite sounding engine for every cylinder cylinder count?

Rule:
1. Mention ONLY ONE Engine per cylinder count (to allow others to also chime in)
2. Pick ONE favourite out of all of them and post a video clip of the same

Anoraks can also mention the engine code name to educate us

How about we include forced induction too? @ Mods, could we perhaps modify the title of the thread?

My list:

12 Cylinder: Ferrari 6.5 V12 as used in their latest GT's (812, F12 etc.)
10 Cylinder: Porsche 5.7L V10 as used in the Carrera GT - Heard one go past me once. I almost wept. Videos and audio clips don't do it justice.
8 Cylinder: Maserati 4.7 L V8 as used in the Quattroporte sport GT S - One of the most soulful sounding V8s ever
6 Cylinder: Porsche 4.0 L flat six from the Porsche GT3 RS- You are surrounded by these at the Nurburgring. Manic, is the word that comes to mind.
5 Cylinder: Audi 2.5 L I-5 as used in the TTRS and RS3
4 Cylinder: Honda 2.0L I4 as used in the S2000
3 Cylinder: None

Winner: Porsche 5.7L V10 as used in the Carrera GT

Here's a video with the winner:

re: The best sounding naturally-aspirated engines

V12: Aventador, Murcielago, 612, 550, F12
V10: Carrera GT, LFA
V8: 458, 430, Maserati Quattroporte and even the 4.2 Audi motor (though not as loud it had a mechanical robustness to the way it sounded that fans of Japanese motors will be able to appreciate)
V6: inline 6 motors all sound better
I4: Honda motors, I love the raspy note of the J24B unit in my Kizashi and any Subaru Boxer engine
I3: Hyundai i20 N-line

Re: The best sounding naturally-aspirated engines

The Lamborghini Aventador is one of the sweetest sounding V12 at full chat. It sounds more exciting than any Ferrari V12 ever made, except maybe the FXX. But the best sounding engine ever has to be the Mercedes AMG N/A V12 that went into the Pagani Zonda. Nothing sounded more manic and screamy than that engine.

Gives a fighter jet an inferiority complex.

19,000 rpm.

Doesn't get better than this:

(The last one - v6 is a turbo the rest are all NA engines)

2000 Honda City 1.5 with a conical air filter and broken muffler on a Saturday night, change my mind.

Re: The best sounding naturally-aspirated engines

Two bikes I have owned with straight through exhausts. Both bikes had 6 carbs and 6 (non linked) straight through silencers (not stock pipes). It is often commented that the CBX1000Z sounds like a Ferrari

1978 Honda CBX 1000Z online 6 cylinder across the frame, DOHC double overhead camshaft 24 valve, 6 carbs, 6 pipes, 1050cc. 105 hp at 9,000 rpm, 72nm torque. Top speed 220 kmh

1998 Honda Valkyrie Valkyrie (F6C), flat 6 boxer, 6 carbs, 6 pipes. 100hp at 6,000 rpm, 130nm torque. Top speed 210 kmh.

Re: The best sounding naturally-aspirated engines

1. The best sounds I have heard till now was the F1 race at BIC in 2011. When I was about to buy the tickets, ACI contacted me and told me I had 'won' a ticket sponsored by them. It was a great surprise. Nothing beats the sounds of those crazy machines. The Ferraris had the most distinct and beautiful sounds.

2. This was in 2006. We were 2 self proclaimed auto enthusiast friends on a Pulsar 150, lazily doing the rounds of the town. We were on a highway and I spot a Porsche Carrera 911 in the rear view. I tell my friend to take out his Sony Ericsson W880i and be ready to put it to good use. The Porsche was stuck in traffic so I raced further ahead in clear traffic so that when the beauty passes us we get to hear the sound of the racing engine. The Porsche naturally obliged. I was doing 110 Kmph and it passed us like we were doing 20. We went ecstatic.

Kept on trying to follow it till it again got stuck in the traffic. I rode very close to the rear side of it (probably doing 10 Kmph) on the left lane while it was behind a truck on the right lane. We both leaned our bodies to the engine to listen closely to the sound. The gentlemen inside saw us doing it and the driver puts his foot to the accelerator to give us a better hearing . We went crazy.

Even after so many years cant forget the experience. The driver briefly showed us what his car was capable of by accelerating a bit now and then and leaving us in the dust even while our pulsar was doing 100+.

After 10 Kms or so we intended to take a u-turn and go back. The driver gestured a thumbs up and off they went disappearing in the horizon. A day well spent.

Would have posted the pics and videos here but the data is inaccessible now sadly.

I don't know if it is just me but I like the sound of every other car unless it is a plain vanilla point a to point b car. The higher the number of cylinders, the better.
