I will be very surprised if this is true, at the most interpretation of the rules. Every engine will run at a little higher RPM and burn more fuel when the Air-conditioner is ON.

From the article, I understand that BMW engines - 2Ltr- meet those requirements in the lab but not in the real world when driven with an air conditioner on. I am surprised that lab test requirements are not the same as normal running conditions. This should have changed back after that VW fiasco.

Besides, after seeing VW and what happened to them and their employees, I don't think any company will try to do a similar trick again.

Also, if there is any issue, it will be on all of the 4-cylinder diesel engines of similar series and not just on the ones used on X3.

Nothing new. Been happening for sometime now.

BMW and Mercedes have been caught quite a few times over the last few years for installing defeat devices on their cars.

Originally BMW, Mercedes and Volkswagen colluded together to install defeat devices to beat emission norms. Habits die hard for some.

Check out the following:

EU fines BMW $1 billion for defeat devices:

Germany fines BMW over defeat devices:

I'm not justifying what these companies have done, but, emissions is a big hurdle companies need to pass. Especially with expensive cars, where performance is a decision making factor in buying the car, and the fact that emissions and performance are contradictory, its not surprising companies resort to these. That said, Dieselgate fiasco should've made them a lot more careful in follwing the norms.

If only we had all these tech without emissions.. i.e. circa 80's-90's with all these tech. Heck, the cars were even better looking back then.

Re: German officials say 2.0-liter diesel BMW X3s have emissions-cheating devices installed

How come only the diesels are targeted as if petrol is squeaky clean? Impossible emissions targets by these clowns is getting out of hand, Germans will soon be boiling stones for soup in their quest to be carbon neutral.

This regulator bureaucracy is a disaster for living standards, with diesel out of reach for the common man, everyone is forced to use gas guzzlers. This is literally a scam to get everyone to use petrol which is inefficient, or EVs, which are easier to control, basically fast track to the social credit score tyranny, if you ask me, the Europeans deserve it.
