Hybrid cars run mostly on battery when idling | How then is their PUC done?

Since the car runs mostly on battery when idling, how is one supposed to get the pollution testing done on hybrids?

shikh_oberoi, moving your post to a new thread.

Important question, and one likely to come up often as Hybrid options increase. There are ongoing regulatory reviews in the EU to reconsider how plug-in hybrids are tested for emissions, as well.

Can you rev a hybrid car while it's in Neutral/Park? If yes, problem solved and if no, there probably exists a secret test mode or something for tackling exactly this situation.

If this secret mode is activated only via propriety software, my guess is that the A.S.S will soon start providing PUC testing services too, yet another way for them to earn a quick extra dime.

A Prius would show a prompt on the dash asking you to shift to "D/Drive" to move. One cant rev to show off exhaust/muffler sounds on a hybrid.

All Toyota Hybrids have something called a Maintenance Mode. You need to enable this to force the engine to run.

Check your vehicle manual for this procedure or ask a service technician how this is done.

In my RAV4 hybrid, if I press the accelerator in P mode, engine kicks in and I can rev too. I haven't tried this when battery is 100% full.

Re: Hybrid cars run mostly on battery when idling | How then is their PUC done?

Very interesting question. I've never thought of it before. Driving the Grand Vitara strong hybrid, I can say that while at idle and in P position if you press the accelerator, the petrol engine does come on but it doesn't rev like a normal ICE car would do. Infact sometimes it goes back to EV mode. In neutral the car would not rev at all and asks you to shift to D to drive. While doing PUC for ICE engine, sometimes they ask to rev the car to around 2k rpm for better reading. No such thing can be done here. Experts can shed some light on this

This is explained well in the Maruti Invicto user manual:

How to do emission test for strong hybrid

-Start car and put in P

-Depress accelerator pedal a few times and keep pressing lightly so engine doesn't go off

-Let emission center guy finish the reading by putting the sensor in the exhaust pipe

- Switch off and collect the certificate

Is your car a year old or you did the PUC test for some other reason?

As PUC certificate is required only after car has finished one year

Try telling that to the police who will check and find any reason to fine you, in Bangalore and especially when you are in a different state !

Rs. 115 ensures that headache is taken care of !

By law, police can’t ask for PUC when the vehicle is under 1 year. Do the cops in Bangalore harass you for this?

Even in maintenance mode it's not revving beyond 1800 rpm which is below the required levels as requested by PUC. Please advise.

The virtual RC in Parivahan shows 'Newv4' under PUCC no with a validity of 1 year, so no argument needed with the cops !
