Volkswagen Taigun | System overheated message after parking under hot sun

Thanks to Dr. Bhaswanth Dhoorjati for sending this query in via this Team-BHP share page!

I purchased a Volkswagen Taigun Comfortline manual in October 2022. I have driven it for 10,000 km so far.

The only issue with it is that a "System overheated started" notification pops up on the infotainment system when the car is parked in the hot sun. The notification disappears after a while when the interior cools down.

I am sending some pictures to aid you in the diagnosis. I would be really grateful if I could get your opinion on this issue.

Thank you.

re: Volkswagen Taigun | System overheated message after parking under hot sun

Is this for the infotainment system? Forget about the real issue, why can't at least they write it in proper English? Product management and engineering team who specified and developed this should be roasted in the same heat

Any idea on which region it is to know the temperature (edit - saw 36deg) and whether this notification came during switching on the car (did the screen just froze or infotainment system didn't started up). This seems the 8 inch infotainment system which was changed due to chip shortage (aka cost cutting). So they didn't tested enough as we are not even fully into Indian summer yet.

re: Volkswagen Taigun | System overheated message after parking under hot sun

A little off topic even though related.
In the summer of 2018 we spent a lot of time sightseeing in Italy. I mainly use my iPhone camera for all photography. I used to use my iPhone XS Max at the time. At least on 3 or 4 separate occasions in different places, the phone would overheat and then stop working. And after placing it inside my carry all back pack amongst a few bottles of cold water etc for maybe 10 mins, it would get back to normal.
I think this ‘system overheating’ issue can happen to any and all electronic things. Especially if there is prolonged exposure to the hot sun. So in my book there is nothing abnormal at all. Best to park in shade.
Or if you have to park in the sun, reduce the time and keep the windows open a slit so that some air movement can happen.

This isn't the 8 inch Panasonic head unit. It is the HU that comes with the entry level variants and seems to be India specific. Hence the poor implementation wrt English messages. The Panasonic HU is an EU spec unit and would have been tested far more rigorously.

Looking at message it feels like literal translation from Mandarin to English. Most likely the unit is sourced from Chinese VW Taigun.

The system obviously has not been hardened for Indian/ Middle East conditions. It most likely does not have any form of active cooling system.

Wow! Didn't know infotainment systems had active cooling. Can someone please elaborate on it. Is it some sort of mechanically assisted cooling with a fan, or are ventilation ducts used for the same? I just know about heat sinks in the circuitory.

P.S. not from technical background - basic knowledge from my engineer father.

Most infotainment setups as well as modern instrument clusters have a cooling fan along with heatsink.

This is news to me. I’ve never heard any cooling fans whir inside the dashboard in any of my cars in any condition.

My City has an aftermarket 10inch android, a basic, cheap Chinese import. But even that had held up perfectly in the near 50 degree Delhi summer heat, when the inside of the cabin gets even hotter when parked under the sun. And again, no noise of any fan.

These fans dont make any noise. Heat reduces the life of components, hence automotive ECUs when placed in the cabin and need to do work like driving displays, require active cooling not just to make them work but to keep them cool and prolong the life of the components. The cheap chinese head units are nothing but an android tablet with a heatsink at the back and they will work well in heat. Its just that if you run an automotive grade HU side by side with this android HU, the former will outlast the latter by a considerable margin. In case of this HU, there wont be active cooling but rather a mechanism to prevent operation after crossing a certain temperature, which is like a component protection mode.

This is not an issue, now a days this is the quality benchmark for VW and Skoda cars in India. For the peace of your mind and driving stay away kms from these two brands.

Re: Volkswagen Taigun | System overheated message after parking under hot sun

Every electronic device has a safe operating temperature as mentioned above with the iPhone example. I would anyway prefer a warning message for a few minutes over system degradation due to use in unsuitable conditions.
Now what those conditions in third decade of 21st century should consider the global warming .

I have had the same issue once in the 9 months of ownership of my Octavia TDi L&K 2018. The car was parked in the sun for about 4 hours and upon start the infotainment threw a message which read something like "Infotainment shutting down due to system overheat" for less than 10 seconds and the system completely shuts down. The backing up screen also wouldn't come up while reversing the car. The infotainment comes back on after about 10 mins once the cabin temperature reduces.

Could be a preventive measure though but was quite annoying.

Thanks,
Aslam
