Honda City 1.5L Petrol | CVT failure at merely 56,500 km

Honda City 1.5 VX CVT 2016
Driven 56,500 kms

Hi All

Yesterday while driving my Honda City Automatic, the gear stopped responding while the car was in motion. The gear lever was still in D (drive) mode, and the engine was running, but the car was not moving ahead.

Tried shifting the gears to R (reverse) and S (Sport), but the car did not move.

Had to call Whitefield Honda and send the car to them on a tow truck.

Was informed by Whitefield Honda today, the CVT replacement would cost approximately Rs. 4 Lakh.

I am shocked at the Honda CVT failure at 56000 km and the replacement cost!

Is there a workshop in Bangalore that specialises in automatic transmission repairs?

Any leads would be helpful.

Thanks & Regards
KK

Re: Honda CVT Repair workshop Bangalore?

That’s shocking! We too have a Honda City CVT and the car has never skipped a beat. Assuming you have stuck to the maintenance routine, this is just not done. A big draw for Honda and Toyota customers is their car’s reliability quotient/low maintenance requirements. The major reason behind having a City as our urban beater car is it’s robustness. Do share what reason was cited by the ASC for your CVT failure.

For reference, my city has covered >60k kms in 4 years 10 months braving rain, shine and Bombay roads.

Re: PICS : Overhauling a Honda City CVT transmission

My vehicle is owner driven, well maintained & regularly serviced at ASC.

Whitefeild Honda did the diagnosis, and informed me the test report was not able to identify the issue.
Transmission oil was drained and checked. No issues there.

Therefore they have recommended replacing the entire transmission unit for approx Rs 4 Lakh.

Hoping to find a competent workshop soon.

Try escalating to Honda failing which try and speak to some independent mechanics (check here though do vet them once yourself) for options including procuring a used unit.

Re: PICS : Overhauling a Honda City CVT transmission

I am not sure if escalating to Honda will help since the car is not under warranty. This is the seventh year running.

I will keep fellow members updated on my experience in getting this issue resolved.

Re: PICS : Overhauling a Honda City CVT transmission

Hi Everyone

I have deduced to get my Honda City CVT repaired at Sehmbi, Bangalore. They have emailed me the estimate and a timeframe of 15 days to repair the automatic gearbox. I will update here about my experience, after I get the delivery post repair. Hope it helps other BHP members who need their gearboxes repaired.

Here are some pictures when I dropped the vehicle at the Sehmbi workshop.

Fingers crossed for perfect repair job. Being a 5th gen City CVT owner, this is really concerning .

Please keep the thread updated with the FNG's findings on the cause of the failure, and the resolution. Best wishes.

Re: PICS : Overhauling a Honda City CVT transmission

I am also waiting for Ketav's reply . Am a City 5th gen CVT owner and this news is really concerning, after buying a Honda for its reliability in the first place.

Re: PICS : Overhauling a Honda City CVT transmission

Whoa !

Tranmsission failure in a 6 year old car with just 55k km mileage ( and probably following periodic maintenance) is flabbergasting.

The Japs are meant for their reliability and seemingly to lose on that forte is absolutely baffling and unacceptable and is disconcerting to Honda owners. Hope the Honda India addresses the issue sensibly.

Req to Mods - Please open a separate thread for this issue.

Re: PICS : Overhauling a Honda City CVT transmission

Hi All

@Aditya - My vehicle strictly followed Honda's service schedule. Always serviced at Whitefield Honda. I trust they must have followed all Honda service and spare replacement guidelines.

@InControl - I called them two days ago. They will give me an update on Saturday. Will update here.

@CarCraze & @poised2drive, I am also shocked. In the last 35 years, I have owned and driven Premier Padmini, Ambassador, Maruti Suzuki Omni, Maruti 800, Ford Ikon, Honda City 4th Gen. All driven over 70-80000 kms. Never faced a transmission failure issue.

I will keep everyone updated on my experience with this repair job.

Cheers!

Gearboxes are not supposed to just conk off like that. Since it has, (apparently), definately there was something wanting on the Service peoples side. Obviously they're not going to own up. Did they offer up any logic as to why this has occured?

I mean they have to at least offered an explanation as to how or why a perfectly working gearbox has turned into a state where no repair is possible and only a replacement would work? I would love to hear that explanation. My opinion is all these ASS people are a bunch of stooges waiting to syphon off your money at the slightest visible possibility. And technicality be damned. They always try their luck. If the customer is gullible, they earn lacs in a jiffy. If not, they have nothing much to lose. Just my two cents.

Hope you find a reliable and apt solution to this

re: Honda City 1.5L Petrol | CVT failure at merely 56,500 km

All AT owners should be super careful with the fluid changes. CVTs, especially, need timely changes. Also be sure that the workshop is using the right fluid. At least one BHPian posted about a Honda dealership filling the wrong transmission fluid (Honda dealership fills the wrong oil in my City's CVT transmission!).

BMW didn't have any kind of service schedule for this, but ZF insisted on an AT fluid change & full service at the 7 / 8 year mark. I diligently got it done.

@ Ketav: please confirm that the CVT transmission fluid was changed. If yes, this is just a disaster. Hondas are bought for their drivetrain reliability.
