Re: Honda City 1.5L Petrol | CVT failure at merely 56,500 km

CVT transmission failures are common in the US Honda cars. Transmissions on both my Van and Civic failed. Had to install used ones. One has to use the Honda proprietary transmission fluid.

Transmission oil was drained and checked. No issues there.

Therefore they have recommended replacing the entire transmission unit for approx Rs 4 Lakh.

Hoping to find a competent workshop soon.

Just a thought, could it be some loose wiring/coupling between the gear selector & the gearbox that might be creating this issue? May be worth checking to save on expensive repair.

I have a hunch it might be the reason for failure. Service centres don't usually push for CVT oil changes, you typically have to insist.

I have a Baleno CVT - had to drop a mail to maruti to get the CVT filter allocated from the factory and then under the supervision of 2 technical folks got the oil change done. Do refer to my post in the CVT oil change thread for more details

Big learning for the manufacturers and the service centre folks - to remind the owners to get the oil changed timely!

The automotive market is seemingly coming to an equilibrium.
The Germans are cutting on quality to reduce spares and service cost,
The Japs cutting on quality to save their costs, hence increasing the services cost.
Prices are already on the uptrend! XD

Re: Honda City 1.5L Petrol | CVT failure at merely 56,500 km

You could search for a second hand transmission from a totaled car in the market, it will be much cheaper than a new one from the company. An expert Garage might my able to repair the gearbox (I have heard there is one that deals with vintage cars in Connaught place in Delhi).

Honda is pathetic products and customer support/care and they don't care about you if you face any problems. I have nothing positive to say about them. They literally treated my like dirt when I went to them for a solution to my problems and denied warranty, stating defects are just normal operation of their product. I (along with many others) suspect companies are skipping critical testing before launching vehicles in India.

I would suggest you send them a legal notice to replace your car for a manufacturing defect. (In theory a customer is eligible for a replacement in case of a manufacturing defect)
After the legal notice they should offer you some deal. If you are not satisfied (and have enough anger and resources), you should file a consumer complaint. It will take many years and MIGHT possibly get you a replacement car at the end.

I have faced many issues with my Honda city that I have listed in a previous article and have filled a suit in Consumer court in Delhi. I filed in 2018 and am waiting for the final order. I have lawyer friends who encouraged me to file the case.

The whole process was a eye opener to the way big auto markers treat their Indian customers as second class citizens and exploit loop holes in the executive and legal system to harass customers and earn profits. I will write on my experience with the consumer forum soon.

Re: Honda City 1.5L Petrol | CVT failure at merely 56,500 km

Has Honda lifted the car on a two post jack and tried running the car? With this they can determine if it is a drive shaft failure or a CVT failure.

Basically if any of the drive shafts fail the symptoms would be the same (the broken end would be free and all torque from the differential would transfer there, resulting in no car movement with the engine revving freely)

Re: Honda City 1.5L Petrol | CVT failure at merely 56,500 km

This thread is a real eye opener. I was under the impression that Honda CVTs are bulletproof unlike Nissan CVTs.

Really, is there a single company whose CVTs are bulletproof? (considering regular maintenance has been done in terms of fluid change?)

I’ve had multiple bad experiences with Whitefield Honda Service. Had steering noise in my City 5G, they were insisting on getting the rack replaced and were denying warranty. IMO They are a bunch of crooked folks who try to fleece as much money from the customer as possible.
If possible, I’d suggest get a quote from Dakshin Honda as well.

This scares me, as i have booked a Hyundai i20 IVT. If Honda is not reliable then what about a Hyundai

Authorised service centers can't say that they are not able to diagnose the issue and hence they will change the transmission (at customer's expense). If they can't diagnose, they should replace it with new component on a goodwill basis. You should definitely take this up with Honda.

Hey Can you tell how was your driving ? was it aggressive, sedate ?
while waiting at signals which mode you used to be in (S/D/N/P) ?

As a CVT owner it will help to take care of our gearboxes to avoid such scenarios.

Re: Honda City 1.5L Petrol | CVT failure at merely 56,500 km

I was also about to report an incident regarding a Baleno CVT needing to replace it's gearbox recently. The car itself is only 4.5 years old (out of warranty) driven only 8000+kms by my friend's mom (so I would assume a sedate driver) and the MASS quoted 5.2L as an estimate to replace the gearbox.

Is this a common thing to happen? Since it is not feasible to replace at MASS at the estimated price, friend decided to get it done via an independent garage who is asking around 1.6l for the job.

Could some experienced bhp'ians suggest if a gearbox could be shot in such a less driven car? Is the MASS estimate reasonable? Is the repair (not replacement) from an independent garage at 1.6l sound reasonable?

I have been meaning to post it in a thread but felt this could also be posted here. I do have image and estimate invoices but I couldn't post them here since I am yet to figure out how to upload pictures on the forum (I found the link to go thru the process which is detailed enough, yet to find time to read the steps, my apologies)

Thanks for the suggestions already!
Best,
Jag

Re: Honda City 1.5L Petrol | CVT failure at merely 56,500 km

Hi All

My car is back after the transmission repair.
Drives smooth so far.

I drove it from Sehmbi Bangalore Workshop to Home (45 min drive).

Will drive the car for a few days and then post my review.

Cheers
KK

Good to hear that it is fixed. I hope you will share more details of what happened and any tips to avoid such breakdowns ( in case it was caused by any usage or maintenance issues ).
