Re: Maruti workshop puts the wrong engine oil grade in my car!

I can personally vouch for the 5w-30.
I've regularly disobeyed Nexa for my bs6 petrol ciaz. The manual states 0w-16,which I feel is a bit much for tropical weather. I always pick up castrol magnatec full synthetic for my engine and use that instead. The car works well. The only drawback, if any, is that the nexa guys are unhappy and they don't show the oil change on the service bill.

You aren’t doing a good thing for your car unless you get the bs6 compatible magnatec and that’s very recently launched so see if you’ve got that or not. https://www.thrustzone.com/castrol-m...-and-suvs/?amp

If that’s available feel free to use it

Indeed. My Magnatec label clearly stated for hybrid stop start engines. Given the availability, I'd have even taken 15w-30/40 but its not easy to find offline where I live.

Re: Maruti workshop puts the wrong engine oil grade in my car!

Bumbing up an old thread.

My BS6 Maruti Suzuki Ignis's (K12M) owner manual states the oil grade as 0W20, but on my first oil change, Nexa service has billed 0W16 oil. Should I be concerned?

To give some background, Ignis continues to use non-dualjet K12M engine(unline K12N, K12C). I think it has lesser compression ratio as well compared to K12C.

Stick strictly to what's recommended in your manual. Going up the viscosity is still fine, but not the other way around.

Thanks Shashi.

Update: I spoke with my service adviser. He confirms to have filled 0W16 grade oil. When questioned why he is not filling the grade mentioned in owners manual, he said that they fill 0W16 oil for every K series engine, as per some communication from Maruti. He was not willing to share this communication stating its confidential. On quizzing further he claims to fill the same oil(0W16) in older K series engines, and even G series swift! At this point I asked for a written/mail clarification asking the reason for filling 0W16. He said he will speak to his manager and get back.

I want to get to the bottom of this as I intend to keep this car in my(wifes) ownership for 10+ year in the best shape possible. That was one of the key reason for choosing Maruti over other brands.

There has been no such communication as such and will never be. Its all done for ease of inventory management. If a MASS has to genuinely stock all correct grades of oils then they should have atleast 0W16, 0W20, 0W30, 15W40, 5W40, 5W30 and 20W40 grades. To avoid this, I've seen them stocking just one or two grades and catering to all cars. Who cares if your engine conks off, its another source of income for them!

MSIL knows about this but they ignore it till some customer complains/escalates.

Re: Maruti workshop puts the wrong engine oil grade in my car!

The engine will not "conk off", at worst the mileage may be slightly affected. If a car has a turbo or has a really high performance engine, one would need to be a bit more discerning as to what oil is used. The rest is all noise. Manufacturers change recommendations largely depending on the profit margin on the oil sold. The better strategy to having a long lasting engine is to change the oil at half the kilometers & time suggested.

As long as the oil is rated for BS6 you should be fine with that kind of NA engine. Don't pour the older spec BS4 oils into a BS6 petrol because of this thing which bs6 oils prevent

Not just Viscosity, even the API Classification such as SF, SJ, SL, SM, SN & SN+ also matters as previous classifications will have more percentage of additives.

So one cannot use older or previous API classification engine oil in BS6 vehicles as there will be Catalyst poisoning of the catalytic converter.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catalyst_poisoning

The existence of phosphorus in ZDDP (zinc dialkyl dithiophosphate) would cause the catalyst to be poisoned.

Re: Maruti workshop puts the wrong engine oil grade in my car!

My friend has recommended 5w-40 for my petrol altis. Manual says 5w-30. Is it okay to put 5w-40 oil?
Will it be okay, car has already done 80K and is about 10 year old

Your Altis will generally run far smoother on 5w40 at the cost of some little fuel economy. Go ahead.

Why will this happen? Should not a smoother engine run more efficiently?

Lower viscosity = higher fuel efficiency but somewhat less smoothness

I would stick to recommended grade if my engine has a VVT.
