Re: How to carry a backup car key when travelling

I give it to my wife and tell her to keep it in her handbag.

I asked my wife for her handbag, she refused to give hers, even though she has close to 10. So I put the second key in my backpack.

Re: How to carry a backup car key when travelling

A friend of mine locked his MG Hector and went for a run in the morning. Lost the key. Came back and realise the key was lost. All futile exercise to locate key. Unfortunately he had also damaged another key by dropping it in the washing machine when he dropped his trousers for wash in there. He wasn’t sure what to do - we reminded him of what he had told us earlier. The connected car features, if in network area, also helps him to lock and unlock the car with his phone which he had kept inside the car! We use another phone, installed app, logged in and unlocked his car. He then started the car using the phone, sat inside in AC as it wont allow to be driven away and called for RSA. Ultimately MG issued new set and all set.

The reason I spell this in details - for connected cars, like mine, I have to test this - Keep spare key inside, lock using PKey’s remote buttons. Act like you lost the PKey - unlock with Phone and use the Spare key that was locked inside earlier. If the spare key works (assuming it is not disabled by locking in with other key), we have one backup here provided that the car network doesn’t fail upon you!

Anyone wants to do this experiment and report back?

Then I carry the spare key in the left side pocket of my trousers and never take it out till I reach the destination. The main key, whenever I remove it, goes into the right side pocket.

But mine are dumb keys, not smart. The normal key and the remote key together in one key ring, two sets.

Re: How to carry a backup car key when travelling

When i go to my workplace in Delhi I carry the extra key in Laptop bag. For other NCR excursions it's never an issue as I never take the key out of pocket thanks to keyless entry and push button start.

On outstation trips I give the spare key to my wife. This has served us well till now and touchwood never lost a key.

To answer your specific question, Remove battery from backup key and keep them separately inside the car.

PS: Since you have done this for 9 years already, I will leave it upto you to figure out if it is good practice or not.

Re: How to carry a backup car key when travelling

Hello.
My experience with Hyundai Venue has been a bit different. I have top end variant with the smart key and push button start/stop.
In the beginning I too faced same issue of car being unable to lock itself if the second smart key is present inside the car in any purse or handbag.
However, I have noticed that the car is unable to lock itself only if I press the black keyless entry button on door handle to lock it. If I press the button on remote/ smart key, instead of the request sensor, the car locks itself as any normal car.
Dont know for other car brands but in Hyundai it works if you use remote to lock the car.
Give it a try.

Never keep a spare key inside the car. Insurance company can deny you your car's insurance in case of theft. If you don't believe me, read this -

Coming back to the topic- I keep the spare car key in my backpack. I never leave it inside the car, as it has my laptop.
For maintaining business continuity, I take laptop everywhere with me, sometime I don't even open the lid in 15 days. But in case of any urgency, it should be available. It doesn't have any nuclear codes (for the spies around), it just has few satellite encryption database. yes, I work for Bond! James Bond!

Re: How to carry a backup car key when travelling

I have been locked out of the car with the keys inside, atleast twice with our old Santro. Thankfully, a 30cm scale used to the job of unlocking the door in the olden days.

Now, whenever I'm travelling outside city limits, i always makes sure the second key is in my girlfriend's purse/handbag or when going out with family, in my mother's purse/handbag. They're the safest places to keep your spare key in, as women never go anywhere without their handbags/purses.

Some people will advise you to just be diligent and no need to carry the spare key, but i would rather err on the side of caution than be stranded somewhere.

I rarely go outside city limits travelling alone in a car, so i guess i haven't faced any such situation yet. I prefer to take the bus or the train when travelling alone and request friends/family to pick me up from the destination if possible.

Re: How to carry a backup car key when travelling

The primary key of my Nexon is the Key Fob whereas the Secondary key (Spare key) is the ordinary one.

When driving the spare key being the simpler one always remain in the front pocket of my Jeans. While coming out of car for Break I secure the Primary key fob with my Pant Loop through a Carbiner keyring since this is a Thick and heavy key fob.
Sometimes, I give the spare key to any of my family members and ask them to keep in their pocket.

Re: How to carry a backup car key when travelling

I have suffered due to my car being locked accidentally while running. I had a habit of pressing the lock and closing my Santro door. It became a habit and a few times precisely 4 times, I came out of the car to greet someone and out of habit locked the door. 2 times it was a remote area and opening the gate by scale was the only option. 3 times with my honda city with after-market auto cop locking, it would lock the door after 1 minute. finally, I started to wear my 2nd key on my neck chain. do this till now.

I can’t agree more with you In fact I also prefer keeping the second key of my City in my left trouser pocket or in my laptop bag always , for one I know it is always in my control hence I do not need to be paranoid and two, digging out the key from my bag can be 10x quicker than my lady’s handbags

If the key is not paired with an immobilizer, you could actually get one without the plastic grip, and keep that in the coin pouch of your wallet. A second remote can be inside the car. This way, if you have to use the spare key, then use the key to open - and once opened, use the remote that is inside to stop the alarm sounds.

You can carry the use set (key+remote) in your pocket.
