Universal Terms for Advanced Driver Assistance Technology (ADAS)

AAA along with Consumer Reports, J.D. Power, National Safety Council, PAVE, and SAE International released a set of expanded and updated recommendations for universal terms for advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) features. This is in attempt to standardise and unify ADAS technology related term usages primarily because most new vehicles are equipped with numerous advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). The names used to describe them across the industry, however, varies greatly, which creates confusion for consumers.

The six overarching categories of ADAS are;
  • Collision warning
  • Collision intervention
  • Driving control assistance
  • Parking assistance
  • Driver monitoring
  • Other driver assistance systems
  • Driver monitoring

Recommendation details for each of the above categories are as follows;

Re: Universal Terms for Advanced Driver Assistance Technology (ADAS)

This is a great initiative as manufacturers can no longer call their adaptive cruise control systems ridiculous names like "autopilot" or "full self driving". That would be extremely misleading and would cause consumers to over rely on these systems, as we have read about in multiple news reports. These systems (for now) are simply an advanced form of cruise control, which means that while they can exert a greater degree of control on the car, the driver should not take their attention from the road.

The worst and first offender is "climate control". Some marketing fox must have invented it. The term itself is a contradiction - how the can you even control climate? Airconditioner should have been the usual word, but to jazz up the brochure they invented climate control and the rest is history. Every time YouTube auto saints say "climate control" i reach for my gun.
