I see one one conrod that is bent. You can see that in the attached photo as well.

After Chennai floods my car got damaged, fixed it under insurance but still had a large out of pocket share. The car was never the same again. If you get insurance claim it and ideally sell the car. Will never be fine again.

Re: Drove my Civic through water, engine hydrolocked | 1.55 lakh estimate for engine overhaul & repa

I had a 2016 Hyundai Grand i10 which was flooded, the engine was never turned on so the car did not seize, yet, there were so many electrical issues popping out that the car never felt the same. It made more economical sense for me to sell it off than to pump in money for every new issue that popped up.

While searching for a preowned option I was lucky to find a facelift Grand i10, driven around 9,000 km. Managed to sell my car for a very similar price and got a newer, less run car in exchange.

I would suggest you do the same. Cut your losses on this one and perhaps find another car as a replacement.

Well the momentum of your engines rotating assembly is absorbed by the weakest associated component, which in the current scenario is the conrod as in the case of most NA petrol engines. As all the components come to sudden abrupt stop it is enough to destroy the individual components in question. My suggestion would be to try and find an other engine along with electricals which are in good condition.
Considering the availability of R18A engines it would be apt to swap the engine and electricals as it would turn out much cheaper.

Re: Drove my Civic through water, engine hydrolocked | 1.55 lakh estimate for engine overhaul & repa

2 years back I (my friend) was in a similar situation during the Chennai rains/floods.

It was a 2017/2018 Maruti Baleno manual. With water inside the engine and he continued to drive the car, the result was bent piston rods, damaged injectors, damaged engine bay and overall it was a total engine damage.

We did repair the car and it still drives well. However, please note that whether the repair is worth or not depends on the intensity and the extent of the damage.

The estimate from Maruti was around 1.8-2.3 lakhs. But the total work was done for about 60K with a reputed external FNG. So the catch here is to find a reputed and professional FNG.

In your case, I think the extent of the damage is more. However, the estimate of 1.55L looks reasonable.
So my advice is as follows
Option 1 - Get a quote for the car as is. If you think it is a reasonable number, then sell it.
Option 2 - Get the car repaired. Refurbish the entire car. Sell it at a profit.
Option 3 - Get the car repaired. Use it for as long as it holds good. Then sell/scrap it. This option will cost you the peace of mind.

Good luck.

Re: Drove my Civic through water, engine hydrolocked | 1.55 lakh estimate for engine overhaul & repa

Take this opportunity to sell your car and cut our losses. First, it is doubtful if insurance will pay for the repairs. Even if we assume that they pay, you will never be sure about how the car behaves in the longer run. And then Civic is not a cheap car to maintain- you may have to shell out big bucks if the car decides to live a temperamental reborn life.

So, my advise is to move on and cut your losses now.

Regards,
Saket.

Re: Drove my Civic through water, engine hydrolocked | 1.55 lakh estimate for engine overhaul & repa

My neighbor and I had similar issue during 2015 Chennai flood. We had different experience with our cars. I have parked my swift 2011 model couple of feet above than my neighbor’s Verna 2007 model. This is not by my smart thinking but the way we had our parking slot.

During that horrible event, the water entered into my car just above the car floor and below gear shifting rod cover. I have not touched the car until service personal arrived to my place(waited for 2 weeks due to heavy demand at that time) and it was towed to their workshop. There was many issues reported such as starter motor, A/C motor and the Airbag warning light was kept on etc. Received the bill around Rs 50K for fixing all the issues. The insurance was claimed for Rs 40K and I had to spend another ~9K from my pocket. I have done 104KM till now and its doing superb job. I hope, this is due to I have not tried to start with water in manifold such exhausts etc. and the water was not entered engine.

On contrast, my neighbor car is almost submerged except the roof and he tried to start his car after flood drained to his car floor level. This is where he got into problem as the water got into the engine (as I understand from him) and clogged. The service quotation was on higher side than his expectation. Also it seemed that insurance claim was not an easy job for him. At the end he went for exchange and got a City. He is peacefully driving it.

So morale is that if its significantly older car, the quote is on higher side to fix and insurance claim looks hard then it’s better to look for alternate option as GTO and others recommended.

All the best and hope you enjoy your drive without much obstacle whatever you decide!

Looking at your predicament. Looks like one has to take engine protection cover for new cars. I thought these kind of flooding issues would never occur in Bangalore.

Thanks for your post I would definitely be prepared before hand for any new purchases that I do.

As other said, Claim insurance and sell it off. I guess that is the right thing to do.

I'm a former shop owner/car builder/still car nut..

Don't rebuild that motor or it's components. If you keep the car, buy a donor motor and get as many donor components as possible.

But like others said, flood cars are never the same. Other issues will pop up around the rest of the car.

If possible, take insurance money and move on to something else.

Re: Drove my Civic through water, engine hydrolocked | 1.55 lakh estimate for engine overhaul & repa

My thoughts echo with a lot of our members here.

There are two kinds of damage that is widely seen to happen.

1. Entire car is submerged in water.
No point in hanging around with the car even if the car was not started and engine is unaffected. There will be so many electrical issues that you would not even be able to tell when you will have a break down. Dispose the car in such cases!

2. Water only enters the cabin at a very lower level , engine may be suffering from hydrostatic lock.
Chances are damage is only for the engine and electricals are assumed to be intact. Provided the quality of work being carried out for engine replacement is good , you may continue using your car , with some amount of risk associated.( very minimal)

I suffered from a hydrostatic lock sometime last december. After the engine was rebuilt , there were few minor issues around components that sit with engine externally ( such as diesel leak from injector o ring , engine mount failure etc) , but no issues with the engine itself and its been 10,000 kms since.

Take a call on the next steps accordingly! Cheers!

Thank you all for your inputs. I have decided to have the car fixed. I'm looking for a replacement engine, maybe from an accident vehicle. Does anyone have an idea where in India I could find such engines? Appreciate any inputs.

Hi, I know a guy who is selling a perfectly running healthy engine. Let me know if you’re interested.

Re: Drove my Civic through water, engine hydrolocked | 1.55 lakh estimate for engine overhaul & repa

Hi,
I made a grave mistake and drove my diesel wrv without engine oil. The engine is running with high noise and it’s not seized. Now Honda is estimating 2.5 lakhs for engine overhaul as control rod and piston seems affected. Is the estimate correct and will the car be back to normal after this?
