Ultraseal tyre sealant - Does it work?

(A search for "ultraseal" on team-bhp revealed nothing)

Ultraseal is a viscous tyre sealant applied to new tyres to protect them from punctures.

1. Has anyone applied this? How is it working?

2. Or, has anyone used alternative sealants like Slime?

3. Does the use of sealants unbalance the wheels?

4. Are tire-wallah's relunctant to repair tyres that have Ultraseal in them?

5. Only dealers for south India are listed. Has anyone procured this in north India?

The website makes big claims:

I dont know anything about this particular brand, but tyre sealants work in reducing the chances of being stranded with a flat tyre. They basically work as a fluid / gel that repair any punctures by blocking the exit of air.

I guess this works only on the tubeless tyres, Right? In not how do you get the sealent inside the tube?

yeah GTO your right but they dont repair ANY puncture.they have a limit not sure bout the exact figure but they can only fix punctures upto a certain width some where around 1/4-1/3 an inch big.anything bigger and it wont work.once a hole is created the gelatinous substance spreads over that area and seals it up.

no tube type as well....u deflate the tyre completely....remove the stopper valve add the gel(certain specified amount) and then fill it as u normally would.

Through the air filling valve.

One question? Doesn't this fluid / gel that repairs any punctures by blocking the exit of air add any extra weight to the tyre. I guess the added weight is minimal.

Slime

Apart from UltraSeal, has anyone used Slime. Similar to Ultraseal, it claims that in case of Tubeless Tires, it
  • Prevents flats!
  • Instantly seals punctures up to 1/4
  • Will not rust or corrode rims
  • Won't freeze or dry up
  • Installs easily, works continuously
http://www.speedworksindia.com/slime.htm

A friend is looking to use one of the 2 in his SX4.

I use it in all my cars, works very well. The important thing is to follow the instructions with regards to quantity that has to be put in every tyre. The instructions have been given on the bottle.

Ultraseal must have recently appointed dealers in Chennai. When I was searching in May last year, could not find anything other than Slime and Airseal as available products in India.

I had Slime shipped to Delhi from Speedworks, Chennai and 'installed' it myself in my Scorpio tyres in June 2007. Then I went for a speed test on the Greater Noida Expressway! 145 kmph was OK; no wobbling.
HOWEVER, do note this: At certain speeds or at some upsetting moments like pothole etc.. a mild wobble can be felt in the steering wheel. This very quickly disappears as the 'disturbed' fluid in the tyres again finds equillibrium.
I have not had any punctures in this one year, but that is no big deal. What IS a big deal is that there is no pressure loss at all from the tyres!
I have only topped up ONCE, in November, ONSET OF WINTER, to a max of 2 psi. All 4 wheels had gone down to 29 or so due to lower temperatures. I brought them up to 31 psi. Whenever I check, with a very accurate pencil-type gauge, I find each tyre at 32 psi. With summer having set in I'm able to measure 32.5 psi on cold tyres. I'll adjust if ambient temps go up considerably.

Here are the details of my search last year:

Slime can be bought at N1 Racing Equipment, Mumbai. They get it from Speedworks, Chennai.
Website: Look up N1 engineering.
Tel: 0091 9821221791
Fax : 0091 22 24441796
Mr.Anant Pithawalla

Airseal Tyre Milk is available at Rawat Automobiles,
41 & 42 Jamroodpur Auto Complex, G.K. Part 1, New Delhi 110048
Mobile: 91-98110 50088
Tel: 91-11-29231467
Mr. Rajesh Rawat

As for efficacy, these products DO WORK, if installed correctly. Their usefulness is rather limited with tubed tyres, but they work much better for tubeless.
Temperature is not an issue; they have a very wide operating range, going down to well below zero.

Please note these are a different class of product - these are puncture preventatives, not simply 'puncture repair' aerosol cans. These products will very successfully seal tread area punctures upto almost 6 mm dia for tubeless tyres, provided the recommended quantity has been installed into the tyre. No further 'repair' is needed for a puncture sealed by them. Nothing can help you with tyre wall damage, or even those that are very close to the sidewall.
An important point to remember is that these sealants work while the tyre is in motion, and they cannot seal if the tyre is stationary.
There are many makes available on the international market, but in India I have seen only these two. And prices here are also 'novelty prices'; eg. Slime costs about $40/- per US Gallon in the US, but in India you'll be paying about four times this price.

Very Important to have a wheel balancing job done BEFORE filling up this goo into the tyres.
Adhere to the recommended dosages. I used 18 ozs per tyre for my 235/70R16 tyres.

BTW, these products extend the tyre life as well by allowing the tyres to run cooler. These viscous fluids are very good heat conductors.

BTW, the cutest little air compressor is also available from N1 Racing; this is a branded SLIME product also and costs Rs. 1450=00 vs Rs.450=00 for the typical Karol Bagh types! Once you see this little baby, you'll find it tough to settle for anything less. Check it out at this website : Slime compact flat tire repair and inflation system
Comes complete with all kinds of connectors and a carrying case, and a handy 'pencil type' pressure gauge (different from the one I already owned. This is a miniature version of what I have).

Thnks For The Gyan

Hai Anup,

Thanks for the Gyan, though I had heard of this, had no idea about the nitty-gritties. Your mail removed lots of cob-webs.

So procured from India this would cost about 3 K for all 4 tyres? Will start looking around for Slime and costs.

They fill this goo through the air valve? The goo canister plugs into the airvalve or does this need another gizmo to pump this in? Just clearning more cob-webs

Thanks,

--Ramky

Small packs come in squeeze bottles with a suitable hose that fits on the valve.
The gallon packs come with a pump dispenser with a similar hose to connect to the valve.
Easiest way to fill is to deflate the tyre, remove the valve core, squeeze/pump in the required quantity, fit back valve core and then fill air to working pressure. So you need to be at your friendly neighbourhood bunk to do all this successfully.

Got That........

Got that.......

Another thought,

I have a problem with my R R wheel, the tyre bleeds out faster than other ones, after filling to 32, it reaches 22-25 in about 3/4 days. This wheel got stuck on my south journry once while I was driving in mud, I had to burn some clutch plates and pull out with power, may be a leak between the rims and the tyres?

So if I fill this tyre only with this stuff, will it seal the leak, or both the rear tyres? Just a wild thought... ideal would be fill all 4...

Ramky, one of the big claims of Slime type compounds is that they are very effective at sealing bead leaks.

Using it for a fairly 'large' leak is not quite the correct approach, though it might do the job; I honestly wouldn't know. Do get the rim checked and 'trued' before Sliming your tyres.

Also very important to get wheel balancing done beforehand. Once Slime is in the tyre, balancing becomes very difficult to perform.

Does Slime effect the TPMS install in a Vehicle. I have heard it will. Let me know your thoughts.

Just a little update here:
m/s Rawat Automobiles have stopped dealing in Airseal Tyremilk.
Apparently, the engineer who used to handle this job has left them and gone to Dubai!
