Watched this video, VW Gurgaon guys agreed that this is an issue and said they don't have a concrete solution. They couldn't do anything but refill the gas. This is a serious problem and it would be great if the mods are able to help us by sharing this. Not only Taigun, but Slavia, Virtus and Kushaq owners (with 1.0 engines) are surely facing the same problem. Not sure how VW-Skoda isn't rectifying this.

Re: Volkswagen Taigun : Ineffective air-conditioning

I am not sure if this works but let me give my 2 cents.
I own a 2007 Maruti SX4 which comes with automatic climate control, last service the SA found out that there was a error called "SUN LOAD SENSOR CIRCUIT MALFUNCTION"This is related to the HVAC Unit and it was not functioning properly. They rectified it.

Last month I had to visit the hospital for physical therapy every morning, I usually start at 5AM or 6 AM. The weather in Bangalore was extremely cold and we didn't have sun for a week straight. I had to keep the windows up and use the A/C.
This is where I noticed that when the temperature was kept at 25 C, it blows warm air through the vents. Surprisingly the next week it was sunny, I switched on the A/C and kept the temperature at 25 C, it was now blowing cool air.
This never happened before owing to the fact that the SUN LOAD sensor was malfunctioning.
So I feel that the problem is in the SUN LIGHT SENORS, owners please check this out with the service centers.
Thanks.

~ 8°C is expected as grill temperature, that is what the AC specialists look for after any repair. Perhaps one should block the outside air intake and see if that makes any difference in the grill temp.

Re: Volkswagen Taigun : Ineffective air-conditioning

Ok folks, I have gone to this thread and have my observations which I think could help owners of this car with said issue. I'll keep it as short and sweet as possible.
Before moving ahead, some points to keep in mind:
1) All car Acs are built for the same purpose but are configured differently according to manufacturer so need to be used or controlled differently. It's not one-setting-should -work-for-all logic here.
2) There's no point being frustrated with the dealer level of tech because the permanent fix for this here issue can't be done at dealer level by themselves. Because the AC unit itself is not at fault. It's stuff like default settings and software update related. Which the dealer can't change as per the customers preference. They can only go by the book. It would need a new software update from the manufacturer which I doubt they will do because this is how they build their cars and it's you who has to use it according to what suits you. Just like the fact that different cars drive differently and you have to adapt accordingly and get what appeals to you. You can't expect to have a Maruti to configure your S-Cross to drive like a Merc C45 for you, for example. It doesn't work that way.
3)That said, all German cars have their HVAC tuned according to European stats and so you have to tweak the settings to your taste here particularly the AIR CIRCULATION SETTING. Mostly Germans have the outside air almost always coming in via recirculation. This is not ideal for our conditions. The Japs have it differently programmed(read Honda, Toyota, for example) The bigger German cars have a powerful unit so you might not feel the incompetence.

Till help arrives from VW, if it arrives, here's what I think owners should be doing:

1) Never use Auto mode in AC.
2) Always be sure that the Reciculation mode is active. Mind you, it may turn off automatically when the car shuts off and you might need to turn it on every time you start the AC. Not sure how it happens on the Taigun. Keep an eye on this as it's the critical point here.
3) Use temp setting and blower as per preference and I don't think you would need to touch it again unless you manually press OFF on the AC while signing off. The Recirculation guy is the mischief maker here.

I think these points should help you guys with more clarity and relief.

Drive safe.

Re: Volkswagen Taigun : Ineffective air-conditioning

In the days of Maruti 800, it's engine was said to be underpowered to run air conditioner.
Can it be the case that 1L engine is underpowered to run air conditioner in dense city traffic in such heavy German cars? It needs turbo to run ac properly?

I also face aggressive compressor auto cutoff in my slavia 1.0 while driving in bumper to bumper traffic as well as while standing ideal. So may be to not increase the turbo lag they decided to program the auto cutoff too aggressively
I have low hopes of this issue getting resolved as they did not even succeeded in resolving EPC issue till now.

Re: Volkswagen Taigun : Ineffective air-conditioning

This entire AC fiasco complete echos my experience with my i20 petrol from 10 years ago, the symptoms are not similar but same, also BHPians should note the guy complaining is from Delhi NCR (same as me) and we have amongst the harshest summers of anywhere in India, these are the sort or replies I used to get during my i20 days as well where people from other states will claim AC to work fine or not be as bad as stated, well temperatures in many states peak in the 35–40 range which although hot is nowhere near what we have to bear, Here even in April temperatures crossed 40 this year and I myself saw outside temperatures touch 47 one fine afternoon in May.

The problem lies with underpowered AC compressor and nothing else, there is NO solution for it, certainly no software update which can fix it. The only possible but unlikely fix is if VAG changes compressors in all their cars. Until then one has to live with it.

Also while the effects are mostly being felt at idle, that is true for most cars, even my Creta which has a above average AC which is not serviced and probably running on clogged AC filter these days is somewhat struggling in standstill traffic, but runs fine when the car is in motion, I remember the same behaviour in Maruti Versa too which used to be my school van, in traffic its AC used to struggle badly but once in motion it did somewhat better.

Also, June has just arrived and if my i20 experience is to echo here too (no reason why it won't all the symptoms, problems and replies are exactly the same, even my car had good cooling during night), the problems would soon be felt in motion too, in the one of worst summer afternoons (read temperatures over 45), I took my i20 from Delhi to Gurgaon and in the entire trip of around 1 hour, with car even reaching 100+ we were sweating badly and the AC never got the temperatures down, the car also might have been parked under the sun and must have been hot when I picked it up and so had its work cut out (This is not a unique situation and many of us have picked our cars in tandoor conditions but it mostly cools down in 10 minutes at max {2–5 minutes in case of Ecosport/Cruze and 10-15 minutes in case of Honda City/Creta, being in Delhi most of us have seen it all}), the same evening it was working fine.

Re: Volkswagen Taigun : Ineffective air-conditioning

The ac not cooling effectively is most commonly the result of lack of refrigerant. Since there's no leak and adequate amount of refrigerant available, the culprit lies among the recirculating parts involved.

The dependency on lower rpms does tilt towards the autocut of the compressor below certain rpms. Owners can verify this by simulating b2b traffic on an open strech. When the warm air is thrown, the compressor noise can be monitored.

I remember reading somewhere that to prevent ice accumulation in the accumulator, the compressor is disconnected (with feedback from evaporator) using the clutch.

Sounds like farrago of some coding errors. Recently a kid here was learning driving in an Urban Cruiser, basically going ahead an returning back in arcs. Every time the car paused, the compressor disconnected. It seemed like it was tuned to disconnect below certain rpms as well. Haven't heard them complaining about the AC in traffic. Will ask

Haven't focused much but probably our Polo's compressor doesn't cutoff even at standstill, 1.0TSI

This is not true at all, my Ecosport Ecoboost has an absolute chiller of an AC with the heavy body and the 1.0L three pot turbo engine. Ford also had the AC not being enough issue until the launch of the first Figo, where they fit a big compressor and the AC was a chiller and has been the case for all Fords i have been in since. Even the Tata Nano has a chiller of an AC and it has a puny 2 cylinder. This is just VW goofing up on what is such an important need for a car here, i would say the most important feature in a car for India.

Also how is it okay that a new car needs a gas refill? Where is the gas leaking? My 10 year old Honda City has not needed a refill till date and works much like new even after all the time.

Re: Volkswagen Taigun : Ineffective air-conditioning

Being a VAG group car owner (Skoda Superb 2012 1.8 TSI MT), it is really sad to see such state of affairs with their newer breed of cars. I need to refill AC gas in my Superb every 2-3 years to get some decent cooling. Whereas I was recently in Gurgaon when the temperature hit 46 degree plus in my 2 year old Maruti Baleno and the car was just chilling beyond belief.

There is something in these Japs where they understand the market better and engineer their products accordingly. Will my next car brand be European? I seriously doubt that and would settle for a efficient and reliable vehicle like say the XL6 over something from the Koreans or the Europeans any day.

Just my 2 cents... Cheers

Re: Volkswagen Taigun : Ineffective air-conditioning

I recently read Zac Hollis' comment on one AC issues post in Slavia Facebook group stating that Skoda Engineers are indeed working on a solution for this.

Thanks to social media that they are acknowledging this issue & hopefully working on a permanent fix.

The engine is not the issue for sure, the 1.0TSI is a powerful motor. I drive a Polo 1.0TSI and the AC cooling is just fine and I am saying so when I live in NCR where the summers have killing temperatures. There's definitely a issue with the compressors. On a side note if someone can see the difference between the compressors of Polo 1.0 TSI and Taigun 1.0TSI then it'll be easier to understand the cause

Re: Volkswagen Taigun : Ineffective air-conditioning

As reported earlier by owners of Skoda-VW cars, the AC issue occurs when the vehicle is crawling at a slow speed. It happens every time the car has to negotiate through heavy traffic. When moving at low revs, the compressor trips off and temperature starts to rise. In the video, the Taigun owner has demonstrated the AC issue with the help of a digital temperature meter.

To describe the AC issue in the easiest manner possible, the owner takes the car on a busy road. As the car crawls slowly in bumper to bumper traffic and as gears are frequently changed, the AC compressor starts to trip off. As a result, the AC starts to get warmer to the point when it actually starts blowing hot air.

Another disappointment for Taigun owner is that Volkswagen customer support hasn’t been able to provide any real help in the matter. He has alleged that the customer care simply stops responding to emails. As for the service centre, they too have failed to provide any useful solution. The best they have done is add more refrigerant in the compressor. However, the AC issue continues.

Re: Volkswagen Taigun : Ineffective air-conditioning

How can Skoda/VW miss out on such a fundamental feature for a country like India? Did they do any road test at all before they launched the car? Staggering to think that these cars have fundamental flaw in the working of AC.

Agreed. Figo and ecosport had very good AC units. Owned Figo for 11 yrs. VW has a weak AC compared to most of the cars. Having in india for quite sometime if they haven't learnt it is very poor.
