Possible to add rpm meter to base variant's instrument cluster?

Hi

Just curious. Would it be possible to "Upgrade" an instrument cluster?

For Example, Someone owns a Swift LXI which only has a Speedo, Temp and Fuel guage to a cluster from a VXI which has a Tachometer?

Reason I'm asking is that A friend of mine is willing to import a Cluster for a Chevrolet Spark which has a Tachometer on it from Europe for His 07' Spark LT. This is from a 2013 Chevrolet Matiz (Which I believe is the Spark but renamed for the EU Markets) And the Speedo is on Kph.

Would like some advice on this, thanks.

Sure.

We have a few threads here of BHPians with Ecosports doing DIY stuff.

https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/diy-d...e-variant.html (DIY: Upgrading the Indian EcoSport Titanium to the Global ST-Line Variant)

https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/test-...ml#post5021437

https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/diy-d...heel-adas.html (DIY: Juicing up the Ford EcoSport S with ICE, Front Park, ST-line cluster, steering wheel and ADAS)

Also came across this shop upgrading stuff for base model Innovas.

For basic instrument clusters that have only a tacho as extra, guess just have to look at the connection for engine speed reading. More of digital stuff clusters will need software tweaking.

This depends on the interface the instrument cluster has with the rest of the car. If the instrument cluster reads individual signals from the vehicle through separate connections, like a separate vehicle speed signal, separate engine speed signal and so on, then you might have to also take care of the wiring part. However if the instrument cluster mainly communicates with CAN, then there need not be any additional wiring done. Given that this is a 2007 car, I doubt this hence you might have to check the wiring schematics as well.

Most probably the engine speed signal is obtained from the ECU till the BCM of the car and the wiring to the cluster will be absent. From the BCM the ESS signal would be distributed to some other components like the power steering controller or ABS if present. I believe none of the Chevy spark variants had a tacho in the cluster from factory, hence this link to the cluster might be missing.

Thanks Dicky for the Resources! I'll have a look at it

And Audioholic, I'll pass the message on to my friend, perhaps he'll need to check this out with his mechanic.

Yes, you can add it. Irrespective of the instrument cluster having rpm signal provision or not you can add it by tapping the rpm voltage signal from ECU or PSU. I have done it recently for my car without any issue and the instrument cluster does not have any rpm signal pin. Re: Possible to add rpm meter to base variant's instrument cluster?

Tell your friend to buy a cheap ELM car scanner device and pair it with cheap or used Android mobile phone running the car scanning software. The whole setup will cost less than 1500 rs and will provide much more information including digital tacho/rpm,average kmpl, coolant temperature etc.

Also, as a previous Chevrolet Spark owner, I think a 2007 Spark needs a Temperature needle more than a Tachometer which your friend will loose even if he manges to fit the mentioned console. The old Sparks have a tendency to get hot and one needs to keep a eye in Temperature needle ALWAYS.

If the intention of the upgrade is just be able to see the rpm readings, I would suggest that there is no need to import. Just buy an aftermarket separate rpm meter and install in the car. They are easily available, even on Amazon, in 2000 to 5000 range.

This is very simple and cost-effective. If your car is equipped with an OBD2 port! then buy/order the OBD2 port device online. (please buy/order the OBD2 port based on your Car model/configuration)

1. Once the OBD2 port device is available. Plug the OBD2 device and connect your smart phone via Bluetooth/Wifi
2. Before connecting the OBD2 device, Download the App from the Google play store for your smartphone.

a. Torque Lite (OBD2 & Car) - free app with some limited functionalities
or
b. Torque Pro (OBD 2 & Car) - Paid app Rs.250. you can access all functionalities including all Engine fault and Error code

3. Once you connect the OBD2 device via Torque lite or Torque Pro app. You can connect the Tachometer display from your phone.
4. You can also connect a different range of clusters like (Speedometer, Temp gauge, Fuel gauge, and tachometer etc) with a wide range of graphic displays either analog or digital based on your like/interest.

In general, You can use your phone as a tachometer.

Note: Once you stopped the engine. You can remove the device from the OBD2 port Otherwise it will drain your car battery. You need to plug the device into the OBD2 port every time when you start the engine.

Re: Possible to add rpm meter to base variant's instrument cluster?

Hey All, Another question, out of Curiosity. Is it possible to retrofit a Zen Estilo VXI from 2010 cluster into a Maruti Eeco? Seeing that the cluster in a standard Eeco seems to be resemblant from a 06-11' Alto?
