And yes, driving with that foul smell was so bad that I take all possible precautions, including tobacco pouches in old socks tied in engine area and the pins in strategic places as suggested
Isnt old socks in engine bay a fire hazard?

There are many sprays available on Amazon...with mixed ratings. Can you share the name of the one you found effective? Thanks.

Check this link. I've been using this for quite some time. Strong smell. So far no rat bites.

Re: Unusual/Weird Maintenance Habits & Tips

Here are some of the things that I do.
1) Always switch to recirculation mode before parking.
2) I Keep cotton balls dipped in peppermint oil and place them in the engine bay Area and windscreen cowl.
3) I try to clean the front windshield with damp
microfiber rather than using wipers when I take the car out.
4)Always try to park after reversing.

Re: Unusual/Weird Maintenance Habits & Tips

Few stupid things I've come across which don't make any sense :
1) Turning car AC on after engine warms up. Doesn't make any sense.
2) Turning blower on before turning on AC. Neither does this make any sense.
3) Full throttle before turning off engine. Some think that it cleans the engine. Instead it will just cause undue heating as water pump will be off and so will the radiator fan. Also good bye turbocharger if installed.
4) Cleaning car everyday with water and shampoo. Good luck keeping paint intact for long. Also good bye rubbers and seals.
5) Overfilling engine oil. Why not , more is always better :-P.
6) Using tap water to dilute coolant. Good bye radiator.
7) Trying to start hydrolocked engine after car dies when through waterlogged street. Good bye connecting rod (s).
6) Replacing brand new cars stock seats with a cheap quality leather seats. My eyes burn.
7) Buying basic trim and fitting after market accessories to compete with top trim. Good bye warranty.
8) Higher tyre pressure than recommended. Sure you know more than the manufacturer.
9) Falling for the trap of lifetime transmission fluid and some other fluids. Nothing's life time, and for manufacturers, it's just the period till your warranty lasts. Planned obsolescence.
10) Painting stock alloys black with low quality paint which chips off from some places. Looks trash. Personally, black alloys lock trash either.
11) Downgrading a perfect working stock ICE with a cheap one. Literally fakes the whole car interior.
12) Leaving the car at the mechanic or dealership for the work to be done. This is by far the worst thing you can do to your car.
13) Engine flush on every oil change. Good bye engine seals.
14) Over revving the car before it reaches operating temp.

A neighbour used to do this whenever he started his car for the first time in a day.

Those were the days before Team-BHP. It is amazing how much information this forum carries!

Unless he owned a Toyota or a Honda, engine must be on its last legs by now.
