Re: My car's sunroof shattered!

Most of the examples cited here in this thread applies to spontaneous shattering of tempered / toughened glass. It is a well known phenomenon in toughened glass. In case of breakage of toughened glass, the entire glass panel shatters into small pieces. The photos posted by OP shows rest of the glass panel intact. So it does not seem to be related to spontaneous breakage of toughened glass in car rear windshield and cooktops.

Please keep us updated on how the company proceeded with replacement, and the costs and other headaches involved.
No, the car was parked just outside our house, which is relatively a safe lane. The cracking noise was noticed as we were trying to reverse it. No external impact like a branch, coconut or stone noticed by the side of it.

BMW says this is not covered under warranty but generally covered under insurance, as confirmed by the insurance agency. The cost of the part is Rs.80,000/- as quoted to me.

Thanks GTO for spinning a new thread . Lot of views !

Gosh, 80k for the part and then the added labour cost etc makes it a 6 figure hole in the pocket!

Re: My car's sunroof shattered!

These glasses are tempered and designed to shatter on impact.

If you wear a pair of polarised glasses and look at the glass, you can see spots (cold spots) on the glass. When the glass is being manufactured, cold air jets are directed at the glass at uniform distances to create a stress in the glass. It helps shatter into small bits which are safer than large shards.

This makes the glass tough ( also known as toughened glass in the home space) but if the corner of the glass is met with the slightest of impact, it shatters immediately.

This could very well be a manufacturing defect. Toughened glass can shatter without any external impact if it has bubbles or was toughened improperly. It's definitely not a one off case and unless BMW finds any debris indicating an external factor, a goodwill warranty would be nice. A good premium was paid to BMW for the quality on offer.

Re: My car's sunroof shattered!

Is it advisable to apply sun protection film like Llumar or 3M on Sunroof. Can that cause any damage or reduces risk?
