Honda City & BR-V | Same 1.5L engine, but different service intervals

Aravind drops in the following query:

Quote:
Hello!

I did a search on Team-BHP regarding this topic, but could not find any references. Hence dropping an email with my query.

My friend has a 2017 Petrol BR-V and I drive a 2017 City (4th Gen) - both of them share the exact same engine and many other components. Even the engine oil and other fluid specs are exactly the same.

However, the City has a service interval of 6 months / 10000 km whereas the BR-V has service intervals of 10000 km / 1 year.

My query is - if my car is used 80% of the time on the highway and 20% in city stop and go traffic, can I follow the oil change intervals in line with what is recommended for the BR-V? This would save me approximately 7500 rupees per annum.

Thanks
Aravind

Re: Honda City & BR-V | Same 1.5L engine, but different service intervals

Guideline or no guideline, it is absolutely safe to go with a 10,000km /1 year interval for the Honda 1.5 petrol. I only hope you don't have any riders like extended warranty, which might be dishonored if you don't stick to their "recommended" service interval.

From 1998 till date, I've typically covered the 10k kms in 2 years and that's when I'd have the car serviced. By following this practice, I have never faced any issues on any of the petrol engines on my Marutis, Suzuki, and Toyotas.

The 6 months service interval for old models was just part of Honda's "Dealership Rozgar Aur Kalyan Yojana" scheme. There will be no mechanical issues if you get the City serviced once in 12 months.

Honda's service intervals changes from 6 to 12 months

Re: Honda City & BR-V | Same 1.5L engine, but different service intervals

I think the service intervals were revised with the BRV owing to competition pressure while the 2017 city was actually the type 4 launched in 2013, after which Honda didnt bother to change it. But changing oil every six months that too for a Honda petrol is overkill when the usage of the car inclines towards time based service intervals. For distance based, Honda has still kept it at 10k which should be fair. Since the car is also out of warranty, its completely fine to stretch time based oil changes to one year without doing any harm to the engine.

Re: Honda City & BR-V | Same 1.5L engine, but different service intervals

Till a few years back, all Hondas had a ‘recommended’ service interval of 6 months. My 2012 Jazz in fact technically needs to be brought in for a service every 5000km/6months! By all means, this was a sure shot way of keeping dealers happy by giving them a steady stream of revenue. This interval was increased to 10000km/1 year on later Hondas, bringing it at par with the competition. Nobody likes frequent visits to the service center, after all.

My 2012 Jazz as well as my 2014 diesel City have been on a 10000km/1year oil change schedule for many years now and both engines remain in excellent health.

Re: Honda City & BR-V | Same 1.5L engine, but different service intervals

Actually the service intervals for older cars Gen 1 & 2 City, Jazz, etc. was 5000km/ 3 months. The car would have just returned from service before the next service reminder call would come. Of late, I've been receiving calls from Honda for service due when my car is at the A.S.S.
If I'm not mistaken, even Innova had the 5000km/ 3 months service interval.
I've meticulously serviced my car every 10000kms which takes about 6-10 months. After the expiration of 5 year extended warranty of course. And I also insist on them using Synthetic oil only.

Re: Honda City & BR-V | Same 1.5L engine, but different service intervals

I have a Sep'2017 City and I got the warranty extended till Sep'2022 by paying 10k or so.

Last year, at the time lock-down, I did not get the car serviced because of more than usual precautions I was taking and it got extended to one year interval. My car running is anyway less.

So, I decided to forego extended warranty (and 10k) and get the serviced only once a year (10k will be offset with 2 times service cost saved).

PS: I still hope that I will get extended warranty, just in case (Cherish Honda, Gurgaon has some nice people ).

Re: Honda City & BR-V | Same 1.5L engine, but different service intervals

I serviced my car as per their schedule only till warranty was valid. Since then I've switched to 1 year/10000km routine as my City doesn't cross 10k in a year. Only thing you'll have to do is to ignore those annoying calls from dealer every now and then.

If the OPs annual mileage is 10k km and he/she is changing oil every 6 months, it is money flushed down the drain and harmful for the environment. He can safely follow the BRVs maintenance schedule for his City.

Even the Innova had a 6 month/5k km service interval - they merely changed filters, did a basic inspection, and gave it back to the customer. The only time my dad had a big expense was at 55k km when the clutch was replaced.

Re: Honda City & BR-V | Same 1.5L engine, but different service intervals

Didn't Honda change the service interval of all its models to 10,000km/1 year?

I have a 2012 Brio which I service once a year as my running is less. Whenever I get a reminder call for servicing (6 months after my previous service) I just explain the same to them. Usually, they agree without much persuasion.
Of course, my car is way past its warranty period so they can't threaten me with that either.

Re: Honda City & BR-V | Same 1.5L engine, but different service intervals

As the other members have advised, 10,000 km / 1 year service interval is good enough for 1.5 liter NA Petrol engine. Closer than that will be harmful to the environment besides being wastage of money.

Re: Honda City & BR-V | Same 1.5L engine, but different service intervals

Why is 1 year (or 6 months for that matter) a condition for changing engine oil? I am assuming a simple check on the dipstick can give a fair impression of oil condition. There are enough and more cars that don’t do even 10k kms a year. For them to be rushing around changing oil (and filters) just because the ASS has a sales schedule seems wasteful both on the pocket and on the environment.

Yes, that's the service interval for the 2.2 L diesel engine. And it's not a healthy interval for Indian road conditions, especially while using Mineral engine oil.

For the new Tata engines, including the smaller petrol & bigger diesels (2.0 l Kryotec), the interval is anywhere between 5000 - 10000 km / 0.5 - 1 year.

For reference, my Harrier has a service interval of 7500 km / 6 months, whereas the Jeep Compass with the same engine has a service interval of 15000 km / 1 year. I guess MG Hector also has the same.
