Re: 2nd-gen Mahindra Thar | Niggles, Problems & Solutions

It isn't a Thar without a dedicated long niggles thread on team bhp. Owners are advised to bookmark it as you will be visiting this page frequently. Hope it helps you immensely like it did with my first gen Thar.
Coming to the leakage issue in the first post. Not sure the workshop sealant job would hold well in the long term. Would advise to ask for complete roof replacement.

Re: 2nd-gen Mahindra Thar | Niggles, Problems & Solutions

An Update in short: I was surprised to see Mahindra call me for Thar issues and within a few hours they sent 2 of their service guys to replace the horn at my home!

In detail: Today at around 11 am, Mahindra Kolkata Area Service Manager called me enquiring about my Thar. I was surprised when he asked me about my Sikkim trip He continued to enquire about the issues that my Thar had. I generally share my Automotive and Travel experiences with everyone, but I did not think Mahindra guys would notice it. I had posted multiple good experiences with my Thar as well as this one, which describes a few issues I faced -

Now, a few of the issues are known, even when you see the vehicle for the first time and a few of them gradually pop up. Some of them were software issues and some around the infotainment system! As we discussed, about the issues I faced, I forgot to mention the horn issue (it stops working or becomes dull, after a continuous drive of about 4-5 hours) to him. Our Mahindra person promptly mentioned the horn issue I faced and asked me to bring the vehicle to the Service center. I was not getting any time and so, he offered to send Mahindra Service Guys to my home and replace the horn. Within a few hours, a couple of guys came to my home and replaced the horn!

Really!! Does Mahindra offer this level of service and customer satisfaction? If such detail to customer satisfaction continues, I think they are going to grow by leaps and bounds!

Re: 2nd-gen Mahindra Thar | Niggles, Problems & Solutions

Can those who faced niggles please update on the resolutions here.

What I see from the trails is that Mahindra is driving resolutions and the dealers are able to provide an experience that doesn’t irritate an already niggled Thar owner.

It’s good they are able to reactively help solve the issues for now, but with the volumes that will be sold over the next months, this model may not be sustainable by the dealers and Mahindra is better off investing time and energy in ‘assurance’ during production itself.

Re: 2nd-gen Mahindra Thar | Niggles, Problems & Solutions

I don't know about others, but reading this thread is surely making me so scared that I feel I will never go near a Mahindra vehicle again. What is the use of such a car, however exclusive looking it might be, if you can never take it out with confidence. Even if the higher ups in Mahindra read this thread, I doubt if anything is going to change. They simply don't have the technical prowess to make such higher end vehicles with complex electronics.

Im unable to understand what kind of trials Mahindra put the Thar to for months and months? Water leaking in to the cabin and even fine dust particles is completely unacceptable. What is the point of the so called hard top if there are such issues? I mean, isnt this an obvious issue in this kind of hard top situation and should it not have been tested with stringent measures?

Re: 2nd-gen Mahindra Thar | Niggles, Problems & Solutions

It has been ~3 days with no activity on this thread and it can mean any of the 3 things:

1. All niggles reported have been resolved to owner's satisfaction
2. Owner's don't want to share their ordeal anymore for such an expensive heart over head purchase
3. Owners facing niggles are not on tbhp and are left to the mercy of dealers and Mahindra to resolve issues

The reason I say this is, as a prospective buyer whose Thar is scheduled for delivery in the next 1 month, I just hope it is #1 from above and things start to settle down and not #2 or #3.

Request all Thar owners to keep this thread updated for the benefit of all. It will be a great ready reckoner for everyone.

And yes, time and again it has been said that with Tata and Mahindra, it's always best to wait for a V2, but then there are always few early adopters. The reason I bring this up is because few posts I feel have been borderline ridiculing the early adopters, which I do not think is/should be the intent of this group. So let's keep sharing experiences and suggestions to make everyone's life easier.

Waiting to hear more from existing owners of their experiences with niggles and resolution. Also, any recommendations for PDI in light of findings?

Day 7: Absolutely irresponsible behavior from both the dealer and Mahindra. No update on what is the cause of this DEF issue nor how they are going to solve it. The dealer has called me twice in the last 7 days to give any update. No calls whatsoever from Mahindra.

This issue was first reported on 2nd Dec 2020 at that time Sireesh Auto Service Centre on Magadi road had kept the vehicle for 2 days before giving it back to me quoting they have solved the problem. Their diagnosis was water in the DEF sensors and they have cleaned it up. Questions they asked while taking the vehicle were hilarious at the best - Saar, off-road hogidraaaa? Did you water-wade the Thar, How much water was there? But the best of them was a straight face solutions - DEF must have gone empty we will top it up and everything will be fine. There was still 18 litres in the tank when they did that.

I don't know how many more hits and misses they will try before solving this issue and the wait is on now to see when they will deliver the Thar back to me.

Welcome Satskum, do you want to prompt them to check all the wiring couplers as ph03n!x suggested.

Changing the wiring harness might fix this, but you'll not know what other socket will be loose in the new harness.

Make no mistake - Wiring Harness related loose connections are the Achilles Heel for the new Thar. Most of the errors a new Thar owner encounters will boil down to that .

My Thar has completed 8500+ KM, and more than 6000 KM after the fuel sensor issue was fixed by re-crimping wire connecting the sensor in the fuel filter end and the ECU end as well. No issues <touchwood!> at all since then.

Latest update this evening: I am told for Thar 2020 issues with parts they are not taking the traditional route and airlifting all parts to the dealer. So their commitment is 24 hours from the time of ordering the part will reach the dealer.

For the issue I am facing I have been promised that the DEF Tank, sensors, wiring harness etc was ordered on Saturday and shipped the same day. It will reach dealer tonight and they will replace the parts tomorrow.
That's the pipe dream given to me, reality check will happen tomorrow evening

They seem to have zeroed it down to the DEF tank, sensor/s and wiring harness and have been told by Mahindra SME team to replace all of it. Mine was the first vehicle to have reported this issue in Dec. Since this is a repeat issue, they are probably being over cautious in wanting to replace everything. Wait n watch mode is on

++++

Did the pipe dream get into reality? Did they change everything on time? What's the update?

Request you to please update us on the status as a prompt service by Mahindra will go a long way in building the confidence for all others.

This is the email they sent me

Dear Sir,

I am extremely Sorry for the inconvenience caused. The delay has happened due to the transporter (his vehicle got break down). Today (5.3.21) Morning the Parts has been received. Parts Head of dealer Mr. XXXXX has confirmed me and the work has been started. We will try to deliver the vehicle today or latest by tomorrow.

I guess the transporter was using a Mahindra too, hence the break down

There is no airlifting of parts happening

It is day 12 since my complaint and the vehicle is still not ready.

I have given up on them and guess it would still take 3 days or so

It doesn't matter if you spent 17 lakhs or 7 or for that matter only 1.7 lakhs. It might be a small money for the corporates, but at an individual level it is hard earned money spent on an aspiration. Heck you got to be treated better.

In the end when all goes good and the Thar is back on road, I am sure you will create memories that will trump this experience. Afterall you buy a Car once but live with it forever. But the bad taste left by these experiences is the worst of this ordeal.
