Only the front right-side, the one where the noise was coming from.
They said they need to be replaced on both the front sides costing 35k more (18k + 35k), but they agreed to replace only one side and see if the noise disappears. Thankfully it did.

Is there any such fix for F10 530D LCI. I feel my car has a play in the steering as steering judders and vibrates on rought roads/ potholes and also on full steering lock. I think the rack or the steering column has play in it. Is there a damper or screw in the rack to adjust the play? Experts please advice. Thanks in advance. @Maverick5490 @Moontan

According to realoem https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...diagId=32_2071 the steering repair kit is only for the Thyssenkrup rack and not the ZF one. As far as I know Thyssenkrup has made the variable sport steering rack for f30. Before anyone orders this steering repair kit, please confirm which steering rack you have.
On another note, does anyone know how to identify whether the steering rack is ZF or Thyssenkrup supplied?

Thank you for the stringent application process. You are people after my own heart and I hope I’ve correctly used the ‘multi quote feature’ and that I’ve correctly followed the ‘quote only the relevant content to avoid inconveniencing other users’ directive.

I have the same query that @georgesunnyt had and would like to request @Maverick5490 to help clarify the description from the realoem site.

Isn’t the Thyssenkrupp variable sports steering electric power steering rack the only one with a valid repair kit available from BMW?

I’m asking this as the custodian of a BMW F34 3GT with a regular (non variable sports steering) ZF electric power steering rack as I’m being driven crazy trying to isolate the source of certain noises somewhere in the front end of my car.

Also do note symptoms that require this repair kit are very obvious ones. If you are trying hard to isolate these certain noises, it's probably something else.

@georgesunny, good to know that you were able to apply the repair kit to your car with the non variable sport steering.

• Were you able to find out whether your car has the steering rack by ZF?
• Was this work done at the BMW authorized service centre?
• Could you please share the part number of the repair kit?

@georgesunnyt, originally, I had two types of sounds in my car.

The first was a clunking sound at lower speeds on rough roads that I was trying to diagnose. On an unrelated service centre visit, the technician pointed out that the fluid filled bush on one of the control arms had cracked and the fluid was leaking.

So, considering the expected wear and tear of adjacent components at that time (7.5 years and 75,000 km) and to avoid repeated labour and wheel alignment instances, I went ahead and changed these parts at the same time on the front subframe:

• 2 control arms, 1 each on the left and right side with a solid bush on the chassis side and a ball joint on the wheel side with new bolts and nuts as applicable
• 2 control arms, 1 each on the left and right side with a fluid fulled hydro bushing on the chassis side and a ball joint on the wheel side with new bolts and nuts as applicable
• both inner tie rod and outer tie rod end on both the left and right sides along with new protective boots
• the above bushes and ball joints torqued to specification at ride height after lowering the car from the lift and to the ground followed up with a wheel alignment
• 2 tubes of BMW FB-1 grease for fresh greasing, one for each side of the steering rack

The above seemed to fix the clunking sound though I'm not fully sure and continue to keep a close ear on the sounds.

The second was a kind of low volume zipper open/close kind of sound (grrrr, grrrr, grrrr) when I turn my steering wheel a little to the left and right and back again at low speeds while driving and with very less ambient noises. I'm still not sure what this is and am still investigating.
