Re: OBD (On-board diagnostics) for Indian Cars

Anybody know which OBD reader app will show me the DPF, SOx and NOx percentages of a Mahindra Thar?

I used to get these information using Forscan and Vgate iCar2 Bluetooth OBD II tool for my Ecosport, as in below.

Hi Traveler,
A couple of days back, ABS error popped up in my Skoda Octavia (2016 model) and want to diagnose further before I take it to the service centre. I'm a newbie and cannot DM. I stay in Bangalore and would like to get in touch with you to see if I can get additional info on the error. Thanks.

@Traveler, great to hear about your initiative. I’m curious to know whether your Autel Maxicom 808Z tool supports the Suzuki Baleno 1.6 and if it does, whether you’ve used it successfully with the Suzuki Baleno 1.6. Thank you.

I also have the VW VCDS cable and software which works fine on my VW Polo GT TSI 2017 model. As you would be aware a lot of interesting tweaks can be done for VW cars using this.

Just reach out to me in case you need any help related to these.
Hello Traveler,

We recently purchased the Seltos Xline D AT and looking for a suitable OBD scanner that can help track DPF, soot level etc. Would you be able to recommend a good one? Not very fancy or expensive - just a basic one.

Thank you!

You can try https://www.amazon.in/KONNWEI-Scanne.../dp/B089LTJTMC

I am not sure if it can show the soot level but otherwise I have heard it's a good scanner for a friend who uses it regularly.

Hi everyone,

Where can I buy the OBD connector? I mean the female connector in the car, where we fit the OBD device.

Re: OBD (On-board diagnostics) for Indian Cars

Hi,
I was planning to purschase an OBD scanner to log data for my project. I purely just need logging of data and nothing else. I plan on connecting the OBD with this python library to log data (Python Package).
I also found a cheap OBD scanner online on Robu (Link). My only concern is, are such cheap OBD's safe to use? I will soley use this for logging purpose alone so it safe? And anyone else has experience logging OBD data in some format (like csv), if yes, which OBD scanner did you use?
Thank you

You can use this article to choose a good quality OBD2 scanner. I use a Vgate scanner I bought off of Banggood and it has been working flawlessly thus far.

which OBD 2 car scanner for a DIYer

Mods kindly merge with an existing thread, if exists.

I was considering getting an OBD 2 scanner as i do end up with error messages while fixing things on my cars

latest being a door module going dead in the middle of troubleshooting. I have some German(mercs) cars, a few Japanese and a Korean. so my need is a scanner that can read all the modules and help me clear codes, log live data(ABS sensors, other sensors) and activate/deactivate basic stuff like fans/ actuators etc.

Awaiting for suggestions.

Regards,
Pramod

Re: which OBD 2 car scanner for a DIYer

If you re serious about DIY car repair get the best OBD reader money can buy!

A couple of things to watch for. Most OBD readers will read all generic P codes, but there are other codes too and there are manufacturer and model specific codes too.

You want to make sure you get a reader that can read as many substems and thus codes as possible.

Rule of thumb: if the OBD reader doesn't require input to the make, model and VIN number, it is unlikely to read all the relevant codes of a particular vehicle.

Avoid cheap Chinese ones. I know they are popular, but they are also the ones that can cause harm to your car’s electronics! Ask me how I know!

Having said all of the above, even a decent generic OBD reader will give you lots of information. If it just provides you with an error code, you need to find the relevant information on how to translate that code into a diagnosis and possible solution. Again, the same code, might have different meanings across manufacturers. At least as possible diagnosis and solutions.

Irrespective you need to be able to interpret and diagnose from the code and text. E..g. There is a good example in my thread fiddling with cars. My Jaguar used to go into reduced power mode all the time. The code was related to a problem with the throttle body. Which according to the official Jaguar instruction should be replaced at a cost of about Euro 3000 I traced it to a broken connector on the wiring loom though and fixed it with a tie-wrap. At a cost of a few Euro cents. Still holding!
