Bosch claims breakthrough diesel tech that drastically cuts diesel NOx emissions

German engineering firm pushes emissions far below required levels using existing hardware and is available immediately!

Will it lead to revival of diesel cars in Europe ?

Announcing the breakthrough, Bosch’s chief executive, Dr Volkmar Denner :

Journalists were given the opportunity to drive around Stuttgart in cars equipped with the new system. The results captured from these demonstration drives showed average NOx emissions of under 40mg/km, despite the cars being driven in city centre traffic.

This is wonderful development especially after the VW's Dieselgate.

How does enhancing EGR and Turbo themselves cause such remarkable efficiency ?

This is the best news I've heard in a long time after the 50 stars country's conspiracy to make the world electric. I'm sure Elon Musk wouldn't wanna wake up to that news!

Poetic irony that one German company is cleaning up after another.

Given the announcements from several manufacturers and countries to move completely towards EVs in the very foreseeable future, this might just be tad too late. The fact that this can't be retrofit into existing cars (already manufactured) doesn't help diesel's cause.

Hopefully though, this technology finds its way to products in countries such as ours where diesel vehicles will continue to be sold in large numbers (UVs, commercial vehicles).

Best part is that the car in the photograph looks like a VW Golf.

I hope it's the Bosch itself and not the VW car playing tricks with them 'thinking' that it's being 'tested' on a 4 wheel dyno this time!!

Wasn't Bosch the one who supplied ECUs to VW with the cheating software implemented in case of dieselgate?

How long do such innovations need to take place for fossil fuels? Ultimately, its how they do it and what is the premium over existing implementation that matters.
Hope they hand it over to such people who found out about the diesel gate scandal or other scandals involving diesel emissions. Did VW fix this particular Golf's emission system

Bosch Diesel "Breakthrough" might slow switch to electric cars and is great news to help in the fight against CO2-induced global warning.

Quite interested to understand how this innovation specifically works out with "optimized turbochargers". However changes to EGR / air-flow management rather is quite understandable . If this is the case, I'm sure automotive associations / Governments would certainly rethink extending diesel powertrains by a few more years.

Diesel passenger cars may live a bit longer with Bosch's tech, but I don't think it will be fun anymore.
  • Real driving emissions (RDE) optimised turbo for low end and transient response.
  • Optimised engine map for low fuel consumption and reduced nox emissions.
  • DPF, diesel oxidation catalyst, nox storage catalyst and diesel exhaust fluid for SCR is still a requirement.
  • EGR now works at all RPM ranges.
  • There is an increased fuel efficiency penalty (1.5%) in stop and go traffic from cold starts.
  • Talks about further optimisation at several sections.

You might also recall that "once upon a time", leaving everything else aside, there was a case for Pre chamber and Port injection in the olden days (IDI...). Those engines used to rev freely, almost like petrol, and didn't feel as constipated as the later engines that succeeded them with all the airflow plumbing. Of course they were worse from the emissions standpoint and lacked the boost from the turbos.

... and my clairvoyance tells me that there will be forum threads in future on how to bypass the exhaust gas re-circulation circuit to gain the precious 0.718 Nm of torque or run the extra 27 meters per liter of fuel.

On the other hand, the EGR method is surely quite mature, how could Bosch come up with something revolutionary? Do we smell some snake oil here?

Bosch will do its best to extend the culling of Diesel engines in passenger cars or be in the limelight showcasing green diesel tech like VW is only talking about their electric vehicles now.

Emissions will eventually kill all airbreathing engines and I hope electric cars be more affordable by then. Hope it won't be pods as seen in sci-fi movies.

Unless this is verified by an independent agency or two, I'm going to take the news with a pinch of salt. It appears to be a relatively simple solution to what was a complex decades-old problem? After trying everything they could, manufacturers like Mercedes actually resorted to adding a urea solution (which needs its tank replenished at service intervals) to reduce NOx - related link.

Scepticism aside, as a lover of turbo-diesels, I sure hope it's true .
