I have seen few guys who do it every day and some would never do it . I know a friend who has 3 cars and never opened the bonnet in his life.

How many of you open the hood only if there are any symptoms or check engine light?

I do it every morning to check if rats have attacked, fluid levels etc.

As mentioned in my maintenance article, I pop open the hood & give the car a once-over whenever I fill up fuel. Never otherwise.

For my Palio 1.9D, I open the bonnet once in two days to check the coolant level and other things. Since its an old car (2004 model), I need to check quite often.

Regarding My Urban Cross Abarth, I check once in 15 days.

I always check it before going on a long road trip & everyday morning during that road trip. There is always a threat of rats & snakes at the unknown parking places.

We have come a long way from the Amby days, when we need to check the radiator level and the engine oil level holistically first thing on every day.
Now it is a fortnight to a month for me in the new gen cars.

I open it definitely once in a week if not sooner. Mainly to check if there are any leaks or signs of rat infestation and also topup the windscreen washer tank (i use it very frequently)

I do it once every 15 days not only to check but also to dust the area.

1) Whenever I have to replenish the windshield washer fluid. I frequently use wipers to clean the windshield.

2) Whenever I suspect that animals (cat, snake or rat) have entered the engine bay

Like most of the members have mentioned, I generally never do but then the need arises when I have to refill the windscreen wiper fluid and this need comes almost once a week and hence I voted for weekly .

Honestly, I don't recollect occasions when I have opened bonnet to check the fluid levels ever because I never suspected them and partly that is to do with everything being "normal" when driving.

Only recently since I got the oil changed at an FNG, I was checking the floor for any oil marks only to ascertain if he had torqued the drain nut properly.

I open the bonnet once every 15 days or so, just to inspect if there is any Rat or Other damage to wires etc.
Thanks to limited knowledge, I perform only read-only operations under the bonnet.

When the car is reliable(In my case - Toyota Qualis), I think there is no need to open the bonnet when there is no trouble. However, when I sense, there is something wrong, then, I will open the bonnet my self

Few may oppose my thought !!

Hence, I will ask the below questions before I end my post and try to avoid people pouncing on me

1. How many times in a week/month, do you open the laptop cover to see if everything is working fine?
2. How many times in a week/month, do you visit a doctor when you are healthy?
3. How many times in a week/month do you check the house roof if it is leaking before rainy season starts?

Generally I do open the bonnet in every 15 days and do dust cleaning as well followed by sanitary checks such as Engine and Brake oil level, coolant level, windscreen fluid etc. Also I have a good look at the electrical connections as well. Whenever there is a road trip coming up, I make sure above mentioned parameters are re-checked once again strictly. Its always good to have the engine-bay neat and tidy.

Once a month or so, just to refill the washer fluid. else, I hardly open.

Interesting questions!

We don't open the laptop case/cover to check things.
That is because there is nothing to get consumed there (Like Coolant & Engine Oil, which get consumed/reduced over time).
