I am sharing my experience with a franchise of "GoMechanic".

My car suffered an accident on 20th December 2020. Because of my medical condition and being alone here, I contacted GoMechanic, asking if they do insurance work.

I was given the address of the workshop, and then began the worst experience I could possibly have - from delayed replies to the worst process of the dealing with the insurance company.

The work kept on getting delayed. It took more than 2.5 months to complete the repair work. I have attached images of the kind of work done (from the worst paint quality to scratches on the newly painted bumper).

Our car got bumped badly yesterday while reversing and need accidental repairs..

Now, Oriental insurance says they have tie-up with Gomechanic.in for cashless facitlity. So i can't go to Hallmark Honda where we do regular service.

Is Gomechanic.in service good in Mumbai? Any other suggestions guys ?

Regards

I only go to mechanics who love cars as much as I do. Period. And its not even convenient. There are some sacrifices that need to be made to ensure that your ride lasts 10+years. No pain, no gain.

Re: Online car service / maintenance providers: Would you use them?

Sharing my first experience of using GoMechanic. I've been aware of their brand and services for a while and decided to give them a try for the servicing of my 6 year old Ford Fiesta Diesel. In Hyderabad, my car was serviced at Gomechanic CarZing, which is located at Miyapur.

Firstly, I would advise against handing your car over to their drivers for pick up and drop. While it may seem convenient, the drivers do not handle your car responsibly and drive recklessly. As soon as the guy drove away with my car, at high speed, inside a residential area, I regretted my decision and made up my mind that I will personally go and collect it from the garage.

Rahul, the service advisor, was polite and a good communicator, but do not rely on the job cards and updates they send as PDF files. These are pre-populated and mention work has been done on your car when they haven't even begun. Though they make a big deal about the app experience and timely updates, I did not experience the same. At no point was the app reflecting the actual status of work that was being done.

As for the servicing itself, they did a decent job. All the oils were topped up and routine checkups are done. No issues post service so far. The cleaning was also satisfactory.

Overall, I'd say that you can opt for them for regular servicing tasks, but if the car requires part replacement/repairs, I'd recommend authorized service centers. Also, do not expect the level of professionalism that's advertised.

Re: Online car service / maintenance providers: Would you use them?

My regular mechanic BROS (near HSR) is listed on GoMechanic now so I got bonnet denting/painting, suspension overhauling and AC servicing (primarily for fixing dashboard noise) from them. The problem is with OES subpar parts in case you leave it to them to procure at listed parts. I got them to procure OEM or branded replacements and paid extra for it. It is not advisable to go via GoMechanic since they charge the garage 15% on overall bill so the garages don't like them. The garages have to first inflate the bill by 15% to be able to pay the app. I had benefit from GST credit and offers going on so I paid extra to the garage to compensate!

I would never send my car to an unknown mechanic via the app.

Re: Online car service / maintenance providers: Would you use them?

No, there are too many negative reviews around.

Had taken my previous car to a multi-brand service center a few times (not through online). Thought that while they are OK for regular servicing, any problems that require specialized knowledge will always be better addressed by the ASC.

Re: Online car service / maintenance providers: Would you use them?

VOTED FOR NO!

Sharing my feedback with gobumpr.

A friends interceptor 650 needed a regular oil change/service -

We saw this -

https://gobumpr.com/bangalore/offers...l-service-1999

Premium Bike Service for -/1999 Rs

Quote:
Which includes
OIL
OIL FILTER
Chain Lubrication
Exterior Foam Wash & more
General Service includes air filter cleaning, oil filter changing, carburettor cleaning, clutch play adjustment, chain adjustment and lubrication, brake shoes cleaning, wash and machine polishing.

Once the booking was made my friend was called several times by the gobumpr team to confirm the location for the bike pick up. I had strictly warned him not to let them take the bike - Another option, drop by the garage and get the work done.

Probing further we spoke to the garage which was supposed to do this service -

On Checking about the oil grade they told us they use 20W50 engine oil.

The Interceptor 650 manual clearly mentions the oil grade as 10W50!

On Questing the garage we get the standard canned answer -
""Saar this is the best oil we use for all customers""
""Saar we know which to use""
""20W50 is the correct oil Saaar""

Next red Flag -
Engine oil quantity ->
They say will fill up only 2.5L of engine oil as that's all this engine needs.
""SAAR bike will need only2.5L saar its correct saar we know saaar""

FYI Everyone here - The owner's manual clearly says 3.1L!

Finally, the garage agrees to what we say but then gives us a new quote for the work -
Cost of oil - 2245
Labor Charges - 1450 - Total of -/3,695 RS
(This is much higher than what the RE Authorized workshop charge for a similar service)

Re: Online car service / maintenance providers: Would you use them?

I have got my two cars serviced by them a number of times so i will give you an honest opinion about Gomechanic service and workshop.

1. Workmanship: Some service centres have mechanics better then ASS and some have very poor. It's purely luck. Like with ASS if you find them good, stick to them and next time go straight to them, instead of booking randomly through Gomechanic APP. They can be better in some areas .
-----Most ASS are too lazy to do any through checking in your car. They miss essential oil, coolant changes, unless someone points them about the schedule.
----Most ASS avoid any extra work like through brake servicing which I feel is essential. My Hyundai Verna brakes were never touched for almost 85000 kms by ASS but when i finally took my car to one of Gomechanic workshop i found out that my brake pads specially rear were totally gone. Needless to say all my services weather ASS or Gomechanic are always witnessed by me. Gomechanic workshop througly serviced my calipers greesed the caliper pins and rubbed the brake pads. And after rubbing changed read brake pads which were literally non existent.

Now the major issues with Gomechanic service centre.
1. They cheat a lot , almost all of them when it comes to part replacement. They rarely use OEM parts and prefer aftermarket parts, they will charge you way more than the MRP mentioned on the part. So you will have to be intelligent enough to check prices on apps such as boodmo, Gomechanic spares itself. And mind you in this practice of cheating, the Gomechanic "Service buddies" are hand-in glove with the service centre. So you will have to fight with the service centre on your own. MRP on some of these aftermarket parts would be more then even OEM parts. So be careful.
2. They lie a lot. Even if you telephonically allow them to use only OEM parts. They will still use aftermarket parts. So if you want to be sure , always observe your car getting serviced. If fact that is true even for ASS, they too cheat a lot.
3. Sometimes they will be overjealous to work extra such as change coolant when it is not even required. Most cars now use Life-long coolant which dont require any changes unless it's more than 75000 to 1 lakh kms. These Gomechanic workshop will change them with ordinary non compliant coolants and even charge you with coolant flushing. Remember there is a reason for car manufacturers to use Long life coolants. And one of the biggest reason is poorly trained service centres mechanics. Almost all mechanics weather at ASS or at any other workshop don't know a thing about coolant types and may only be following coolant colour coding. As we all know coolant colour coding is very misleading and may not be followed by any coolant manufacturers in present times. Also most mechanics don't know how to mix coolant concentrates and which water to use for coolant mixing, most use boring water only. All these practices are extremely dangerous for the car radiator and have myself faced if numerous times. So car manufacturers solved it by using solved it by using long life coolants which rarely required replacements.

So when it comes to Gomechanic do what I do.
1. Ask service buddy about and name of service centre and check reviews and photos on Google. Remember most Google reviews are not trust worthy as Gomechanic service centre forces people to give them good reviews before delivering car. So use your brains, start reading negative reviews first. Choose a service centre which is big and has required essentials such as paint booth, washing area , AC top machine. Some good ones also have proper alignment and balancing machine.
2. Always witness your car getting serviced. Most Gomechanic workshop allow you to watch car getting serviced.
3. Buy your own Spares from good spare part shops. Most Gomechanic workshops allow use of parts bought by you. In case they force you to use spares by then only, check prices on spare part apps and force them to charge not more then MRP.
4. Insurance repairs are very easy at Gomechanic workshops as in case of insurance work they can't use anything other then OEM parts and they they will only on MRP only. Service supervisors always carry spare parts cost lists. In my experience insurance repairs are faster and can turn out to be cheaper if insurance repairs requires copayment by you. Charges of labour most of the time is less than that by ASS

Re: Online car service / maintenance providers: Would you use them?

If you're considering going for GoMechanic or any online Servicing? By all means DO NOT use these services even if you need breakdown assistance.

Little bit of a Background, I own a 2002 Hyundai Accent in Dew Silver which had the 1.5L SoHC engine that I recently inherited from my Grandad. It has 77100km on the Odometer and It had been maintained at KUN Hyundai, ECR In Chennai till about 2016. It was parked from February 2016 till about June 2022 when I acquired it.

It was started ever so often to keep the engine in good condition, and it was mostly covered with a Car cover on the Street. Despite that, it got its Alloy wheel center hub caps stolen, Several dents and Scratches and even Rats got into it and chewed up some of the wiring And the AC naturally didn't work and many of the headlights and taillight bulbs were fused and no Surface body rust, but the Engine bay did have rust holes, so I assume that the underbody and some interior parts have rust holes as well, which explains how the Rats got in. It was a mess when I got it. Nonetheless, a new Battery, some brake clean and some air in the tires later, I got the car running and the engine was alive and Drove, with some persistent clutch issues, but it was driveable nonetheless.

So, To get it running well, I thought "Hey lets see if GoMechanic can fix the issues." And booked an appointment for a full Service and AC Service and so on with an Addon to fix the electrical issues so the car was better drivable. The normal service cost me about 9300 which was discounted from 10,300 because I opted to get a year's subscription for their "Miles" Service. So I was not complaining. But unfortunately, that was where all that ended.

I gave the car in June 2022, around the 14th of that month. June went by, July went by... No Update. I called the service advisor and he didn't pick up, so I complained to GoMechanic's helpline and they arranged a call back "Within 30 minutes"- that 30 minutes ended up another 3 days. And he was Very rude to me because I called the helpline instead of him. I asked him what happened to the car, his excuse was parts arriving was delayed to which i replied "For 1.5 months?!" and he was like "Yeah because this car is old" Its a Hyundai Accent, I was able to get parts for it on Bodmo and that arrived within 3 days.

After a lot of Back and Forth and getting this escalated, they brought the car back even more broken than I sent it, Along with the "Electrical work" they did, I ended up paying 13,000 Rupees for it. And when they brought it back at 10:00 PM on August 2, 2022. The engine was not smooth anymore, it was misfiring and the Clutch had totally stopped working, which by the way, was told by the Service Advisor that "Clutch is working super fine sir, It will not fail" So, I called him back and he yelled at me again and he towed the car back. The next day, I get a patronizing call from the service Advisor who told me he would have to charge me 12,000 Rupees for a complete clutch overhaul. I was livid! I asked him what he did with my car when it was in his garage for 1.5 months, to which he kept evading. I again called GoMechanic's helpline and raised another concern and they promised me a refund but I haven't gotten it back.

Another Painful month later, I got the car back and it ran. The AC didn't work because they wanted to extort another 50,000 rupees to fix it. Apparently the Compressor and condenser needed replacing, but in reality all it needs is gas filling. Anyway, he delivered the car, I hesitantly paid the money and got it back and it ran well for 3 months without an issue, Until the clutch problems came back around Christmas time.

Now another local Mechanic I always gave my car to tells me that none of the clutch parts in the Bill that gomechanic gave me was replaced! Daylight Robbery! Now I need to spend a lot more money getting everything fixed. Luckily I'm going to restore this car, but was it worth it?!

Please for the love of the car gods, Do not go with any App based Mechanical services!

Re: Online car service / maintenance providers: Would you use them?

I won’t use these online mechanic services. I don’t think they will know enough about my cars and nor are they likely to have the specialist tools required to do the job properly.
In India at least, it is best to build a relationship with the dealer service centres and / or competent/ reputed friendly neighbourhood garage(s).
And it is best to be present physically in person when the vehicle is being serviced.

Re: Online car service / maintenance providers: Would you use them?

Voted no, because of one simple reason - accountability.

If a startup sells me my favourite Calvin Klein undergarments for 10% less than the official website, I will happily buy it. But to trust my car with a startup that has no skin in the game? Don't think so. If the biggest Edtech startup took over a year to file their financials, god knows what happens within these startups.

If I have to compare this to booking a cab on Uber or Ola, there is nothing different, not much at least.
  • The person who books the appointment has no stake in the garage. They just read out the reviews and if your experience is bad, that's just your luck.
  • The guy accepting the booking doesn't care much about their reviews as they have their own share of income from small-time jobs. Say, accident repairs, swapping Indica parts or skimming disc rotors for garages - whereas the cabbies have their own intercity rides and airport customers.
  • I would not trust them even with minor repairs - I have seen a mechanic trying to plonk out the fog lights of a Laura with a screwdriver whereas it has to be dismantled from behind. They may shrug if the lock breaks and you may buy a new one, but for things like door pads and interiors that click & lock, this may become an unbearable irritation until a fix is found.
  • Just an absent minded mechanic may fill too much engine oil.

There is so much that can go wrong even when there is no serious issue with a car or a major replacement is required. I would only prefer the garages that I personally know, especially the ones where the owners would take the blame and fix it if something is broken without asking many questions.

Re: Online car service / maintenance providers: Would you use them?

I have come across many online garage/mechanic services but will not use any because the logic is simple. They are online because advertising online is easy and costs less money but they have to rely of existing garages to make it work and there is no accountability. Now imagine if they say they can service my car for 25% less than ASS, then it implies they share the remaining 75% among them and the garages. Now you can imagine the kind of service the garage would do for probably getting paid 50% less for the same job. It is better to stick with brick and mortar services who are accountable.
