Re: Approved Engine Oils by Maruti Suzuki

Quick clarification.
The Ecstar Brand belongs to Suzuki themselves. They manufacture the oil.
Here is the detailed info in the link below.

Re: Approved Engine Oils by Maruti Suzuki

My Ertiga 2015 (1st Gen - Type 1) went in for its Periodic Service to Maruti ASC. The service center has filled in ECStar 0W-16 oil instead of 5W-30. I paid the bill, and later noticed that they have filled in 0W-16 Grade oil. I pointed it out to the Service Advisor and he said that there would be no issue with the same and that they don't stock 5W-30 oil with them since Maruti Suzuki has shifted to this newer Semi Synthetic Oil. It was almost 8.00 in the evening by then and so left the service center.

However, on reading this thread, I feel like I made a mistake by letting this happen in the first place. It's 5 days now since the oil change and have not observed anything unusual

Have two things on my mind

1. Will this cause any damage to Engine Components?

2. Shall I insist on getting the Engine Oil changed immediately to the recommended grade by writing to Maruti Suzuki?

Fully Synthetic 5W 30 Engine Oild Review on Swift Gen 1 K12 (2011)

Motul 8000 Perfomax VS Castrol Edge (Used with Liquimolly MoS2 Additive)

General Background:

The first 3 service after purchasing the car in Feb 2011 had been done at MASS, where the engine oil was changed at the 3rd Service with MGO 5w 30 Mineral Engine Oil. Since then, I have serviced the Swift at my trusted FNG till date.

I have been using Castrol Magnatec 5W 30 Engine Oil since 2012 till 2022 November. This was suggested by the shop dealer from where I purchase the MGP service parts from Kolkata. The engine noise kept silent, however the performance of the Engine seemed average (not revv friendly). I realized the same whenever I revved hard while overtaking. The acceleration seemed sluggish as compared to when the car was new. I used regular petrol till 2021, thereafter i switched to IOC XP 95. The engine did seem to be quieter and the sluggishness while accelerating seemed to be a bit less but nothing significant. Never calculated the fuel economy until 2021. After using XP 95 Petrol, it returned around 12-14 kmpl in Kolkata's B2B traffic.

The oil change on my car had been done every 6k-9k Kms, mostly once a year. Recently, the fuel pump (in 2023 Nov) and the ECM (in September 2024) had to be replaced. More on this in some other post maybe.

Motul 8000 Perfomax 5W 30 Engine Oil:

I purchased this oil in May 2024 from LRL Motors on Amazon priced at around Rs. 2200 for 3.5L.

The initial response from the engine after the oil change seemed nice. However, the noise increased a bit. Infact, it sounded a bit on the coarser side. The throttle response did seem great initially maybe for 2k-3k kms, after that it seemed average. The fuel economy remianed almost the same. However, I observed something strange for the first time using the Motul Oil, the oil level did dip a bit when I checked it after 1.4k kms from the last service. Hence, I topped it up with the remaining 300ml leftover oil (Swift 2011 needs 3 2 litres of Engine Oil). Again, when I checked it around 4k kms, it was almost in mid between the halfway mark and full. I had around 400 ml Castrol Magnatec 5w 30 unused Engine oil left in my Garage. Used it to top up intermittently till 9k kms until 2 weeks back.

During the oil change (around 5-6 months from last service), the oil seemed thin (ofcourse) and dark as usual it would be. Didn't use any engine flush this time. Instead used MGO 5W 30 Mineral Oil for 2 days to clean the engine before using the Castrol Edge 5W 30 Fully Synthetic.

However, I was a bit perplexed that there was a significant engine oil consumption of around 700 ml in 9k kms since the last service. I read online that it is within the permissible limits. However, my car never consumed engine oil. Infact, there has never been a single missed service schedule till date. Ofcourse, cannot deny if there's worn out piston rings/sleeves considering 13.5+ years of age for the K12 motor.

Castrol Edge 5W 30 Engine Oil

During the Diwali Sale on Amazon, I spotted this Castrol Edge oil being offered at Rs. 2380 for 3.5l whereas, the MRP was roughly around Rs. 4.5k. I researched online, watched a few youtube videos, etc to find you that this was one of the best Oil offered in the 5W 30 grade in the Fully-Synthetic category for Castrol. I immediately placed an order for the same. Also, upon reading the experineces of @leoshashi and @Ashtoncastelino, I made up my mind to use Liquimolly Mos2 additive proportionately during the oil change. Hence, I placed an order online for the same at Rs. 730.

My observations are -

1. Remarkable improvement in smoothness of the Engine.
2. NVH levels are significantly reduced.
3. Throttle response improved greatly. The engine seems revv friendly now to be honest (Unlikely to my understanding for a 13.5 years old K12 Motor).
4. Even though I changed (upgraded) all 4 tyres to 185/70/R14 from the stock 165/80/r14 roughly 10 days back from now, I was expecting a drop in the fuel economy. To my surprise, I see a remarkable improvement in the same with 15.5-16 kmpl in similar driving conditions in Kolkata. Hoping to get better FE on highway drives.
5. After the oil change with the additive had been done, I have driven my car around 1.1k kms till today. I have been checking the engine oil level almost everyday. It remained the same at around the full mark till now. Also, the drives have been majorly in the stop and go traffic of Kolkata with only around 250 kms on highways.

P.S - I am not promoting any brand here. Just my honest experiences so far. But indeed, I'm impressed by the performance of the Castrol Edge Engine Oil. The positive observations could also be due to the Mos2 additive. Not sure. But I would still suggest both the Castrol Edge Engine Oil & Liquimolly Mos2 additive for the older engines.

Also, happy to answer why chose not to go with the Liquimolly Ceratec.

N.B: I do replace the Air Filte and Oil Filter along with the engine oil at every service. Also, the MAP, MAF, Throttle Body, Purge Valve, Ignition Coil and PCV Valve are cleaned on every service. The EGR bypass Valve is cleaned once in every 1.5 years.
The spark plugs, coolant and break fluid are changed once a year.

Re: Approved Engine Oils by Maruti Suzuki

Have just purchased a new WagonR 1.2 MT.
Could someone tell me what engine oil it comes filled with from factory ?
Car has done just 300 Km and I would like to drain the oil at 1000 Km and shift to the specified 0W 16 Full Synth.
On my 14 year old diesel Ritz, I did a similar thing and changed to full synth 5 W 40 after the first 500 Km. That car is outstanding and even now after clocking more than 300000 Km, it is giving me very good mileage and trouble free service.

Re: Approved Engine Oils by Maruti Suzuki

I was using the Shell Helix HX8 0W20 fully synthetic oil in my 2019 petrol Swift. I covered 5.2k kms and decided to change the oil as the car was anyways due for service and the Hyundai (Approved Engine Oils by Maruti Suzuki) branding on the oil was not confident inspiring. I got Maruti's own Ecstar 0W20 synthetic oil and have now driven close to ~160 kms.

I can fairly confidently say that the Ecstar is good but the Shell is a far superior oil. With the HX8 oil I could feel the engine was light, silent and acceleration was quick and very sensitive to throttle input. It seems roughly 5 to 7% of engine responsiveness has gone down post the Ecstar oil change. The Maruti's oil is still superior to the 0W40 unsuitable oil which was used by MASS in my car. I think it is worth paying 1 to 1.5k more for a better oil than the Ecstar. If I had not used the Shell before I might have never known the difference. Next oil change I might go for the Total 0w20 oil.

Ecstar is just labelling and branding by MS, they are manufactured by other oil companies like Shell, Servo, Castrol etc.

You may look at the can to confirm this.

Yes I had seen the back of the can which said made by Indian Oil so I guess its a Servo. :-) That's why the drop in performance even though marginal. Overall it is good but I guess there are better oils. It was bought from a MGP store and not a general parts store.

I moved back to normal oil (from 0w-40 Synthetic) for my XL6, 0w-16 I guess. In Delhi summers, there is no difference at all. I'll stick to this going forward.

Re: Approved Engine Oils by Maruti Suzuki

Has anyone ever overcome to procure this oil (75W) for manual gearbox?
What are these half rated gear oils?
Maruti recommends it, but it is not Ecstar product list. Shell lubricants produce it but they do not show in their product list on website.

Re: Approved Engine Oils by Maruti Suzuki

Hi all,

I own a 2012 Alto LXI type 2. The recommended engine oil is 20W40 and recommended gear oil is 75W80 GL4.
Got it serviced at a FNG yesterday and changed the engine oil and gear oil at 50800 kms. Unfortunately the spare part shop in Attapur suggested Suzuki brand 5W30 and Mobil gear oil 85W90. Upon further research found the oil is from Idemitsu .
The initial experience has been ok the engine has become peppy and smooth, and the gear shift is ok. Has anyone used this combination please share your experiences. Hope it does not have any adverse effects; experts please suggest.
Regards,

Sushil

Re: Approved Engine Oils by Maruti Suzuki

Hello,

Just wanted to update on this thread about the confusion at Maruti Suzuki ASS regarding the engine oil. While entering for my Brezza 2024 Petrol only oil change service, I had told the Service executive that I wanted fully synthetic engine oil to which they said they offer only mineral oil by Ecstar as provided by MS as standard but I could pay extra for other fully synthetic options.

But, I insisted on going to the floor to see the servicing and the friendly mechanic informed that they've been instructed to use only Ecstar F9000 fully synthetic 0W-16 for all BS-VI Phase 2 vehicles as standard oil and there is no mineral option offered for such vehicles. He even showed the drum which had the writing to same effect. He took it out of the drum into a transparent can for change and even showed me the oil for color and texture.

Charged ~ Rs 1640/- for the same along with other consumables.

That is interesting. I gave my car for service at Nexa today. I wanted a fully synthetic oil option for my 2022 BS VI (I think Phase 1, not Phase 2) XL6. They were providing mineral oil only in 0w-16, semi Synth in 5w-30 and fully synthetic only in 5w-40. Decided to fill in mineral 0w-16 and thinking of getting it replaced in couple of days with Castrol Edge 0w-16.

But now I will try to check their oil drum whe I go to collect the car to see if the 0w-16 they are filling is mineral or synthetic. Price they estimated for the mineral 0w-16 was about 1600, so seems to be same as what you got.

I was able to check this while picking up why car from the service center. The 0w-16 oil which they used was indeed fully synthetic as per the label and print on the drums. It was Castrol manufactured ECstar. It cost me Rs. 1600 approximately for 3.3L.

I am not sure if it was ignorance of the Nexa staff (service adviser, floor manager, store manager - all of them told me there is no fully synthetic option in 0w-16), or if it is an intentional tactic to upsell semi synthetic 5w-30 or fully synthetic 5w-40, both of them were costlier then the 0w-16 option.

I also checked with someone from automotive industry and as per him there are no mineral options available (at least not easily) for 0w-16 grade, most, if not all, options in 0w-16 are going to be fully synthetic(or less commonly semi synthetic) only as it not viable to get fully mineral oil in such low viscosity.

So back to my own situation, I might still change the oil but have to reconsider, might just go for an additive for now.

Re: Approved Engine Oils by Maruti Suzuki

Hi there,

My 2008 Maruti Zen Estilo BS-III is due for service. I’ve been using Mobil Super 5W-40, and honestly, it’s been way better than the Motul 10W-30 mineral oil I had before—it made the engine feel a lot more rev-happy. But I am not sure about fuel economy. This car is a keeper and I have no plans of selling it in the near future. I would love to know if there are better options.

Currently, I’m confused between 5W-40 and 5W-30 oil, and I’m also unsure whether to go with Castrol Magnatec or Shell Helix HX8. Which viscosity grade would be better for a dinosaur age 1.1L SOHC 4 Cylinder engine with just 50k Kms. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
