Greatly appreciate it. Can't believe shops/mechanics would randomly say completely different things and so, I was holding out to get the right opinion here. Even our driver said "Anna, why are you thinking so much for engine oil. Just buy something".. Right.

So planning to get Shell Helix HX8 5W-30 API SN Plus Fully Synthetic Engine Oil (3.5 L) at a store nearby to avoid online duplicates / 2nd quality. Or is there anything else?

Does anyone have any experience buying from seller ETrade Online at Amazon?

You're welcome , I've purchased engine oils from this seller and they're genuine , packaging is top notch and fast delivery too. Initially even I was hesitant to order from the seller but then once the product came I inspected it well and found it to be genuine.

For the oil change done for my baleno 1.2 I used IDEMITSU SN 0W-20 Fully Synthetic Petrol Engine Oil.

I found it better than the mineral oil MASS used during the 40k service. Engine idles better. However, they do not let me carry oil from outside.

Also, Mobil 1 fully synthetic is better than Idemitsu, but it costs around 3.5k.

Overall Idemitsu is bang for buck. Tip: get it from Boodmo, you can get it for 1.7k

Have been using this oil since the first oil change of our 2018 14k run Baleno petrol. Ours is run less (<5k annually, 99% city usage). Oil performs well with no visible change in performance as per our usage. This has been my preferred oil as the service center did not have a fully synthetic 0W-20 and I had to get this outside.

However, if you can, you may either stick to the Ecstar one made by Shell or Idemitsu (have heard Shell to be better) or get the Mobil1 MGA 0W-20 if you want something premium.


I have had good experience with Idemitsu so far. I have been using their 5W-30 Fully synthetic for my SX4 petrol since last 30k+ (10-12k annually, mostly on highways) and has been performing quite well (slightly less free revving that the Helix HX8). Switched to the Idemitsu when had to make an emergency offline purchase and have been happy since.

I don't know whether it is counterfeit but its SM spec is low'ish.

It may be considered IF it is non-counterfeit at far cheaper price per L, otherwise don't bother.

My manual says 10w40 or 20w40/50. I'm currently running 5w30 semi synthetic. Is this ok to run or should I move to 5w40?
The mileage and pick up has increased with 5w30 but dont want engine damage. My car is 1061cc wagon R F10D engine, done 44k kms.

5w30 will have less viscosity during higher temperature than Xw40 or Xw50. You might be damaging the engine with 5w30. Stick to manufacturer recommendations.

If the manual asks for a heavier grade of oil then by no means should you use a lighter grade oil. Please use 10w40 or 5w40. 20w40/50 takes greater time to circulate during cold startups. Shell HX7 10w40 is a good oil which is easy on pocket and lasts 7500km easily.

Never compromise the second number. It should remain 40. The first number can even be zero. So you can use 0W40/5W40/10W40/20W40. I feel 20W50 is not necessary. Mine is a 2009 Alto and the oil recommendations are similar. I have been using synthetic 0W40 or 5W40 for many years.

5w30/10W30 will be okay if the car is used in a cool climate such as hill stations.

You referenced 0W20 mobil/exxonmobil AND (Maruti Suzuki) Ecstar 0W20 API SM as pictured in your post.

I'm not aware 0W20 Mobil is available in low specs like API SL/SM but I know for a fact 0W20 Mobil is available in SN/SN+/SP.

Hence my suggesting Ecstar Maruti SM spec being low'ish in this context.
