Re: Shell V-Power Diesel launched

I've tried about 7 tankfuls of Shell V-Power on my Laura. The fuel efficiency has gone down by a small percentage (both highways & city driving). The engine has become a bit silent during idle. Noticing a bit more soot in the tail pipe after the switch. Power-wise I haven't seen any improvements - it has stayed about the same.

My conclusion: it is probably useful in a car that has run a lot of kms, but not for newer ones. I'm going to switch to regular fuel from the next tank fill onwards.

Re: Shell V-Power Diesel launched

I've used a few tankfuls of V-Power Diesel in our i20, when I was in India a few months ago. And I did not feel any difference whatsoever.

No difference in fuel economy, no difference in engine noise, absolutely no difference in power output. Whatever little smoke used to come out of the tail pipe, before v-power, it remained the same if not more after the shift to v-power. Not really worth spending some 8-9 bucks extra per liter just for some v-power branding IMO.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but this doesn't have higher cetane rating or stuff like that, right? It's just regular diesel with some additives? If so, it's totally not worth it. Maybe it'll work on older cars, but our 2 year old i20 has always run on Shell Diesel, pretty much from Day 1, and this V-Power didn't make any difference whatsoever.

Re: Shell V-Power Diesel launched

Guys, for those getting disappointed after not getting any performance gains with V Power Diesel, the company doesn't claim any in the first place like the petrol.

The Diesel V Power only contains additives to clean the injectors. That's it. A difference of 6 to 7 Rs. on a full tank works out to around Rs.300 which is very competitive to the cost of Over the counter additives available for the same purpose. The V Power would have the advantage of having this mixed in a very homogenous manner. And due to this, it's anyway not useful in New cars, and even in older cars they'd only provide any usefulness till the time the injectors are cleaned.

i have been running company cars for several decades. All of these cars are leased through various leasing companies. These companies own and operate tens of thousands cars of just about every brand, model and make.

So they have more empirical performance data then anybody else in the whole of the automotive world. And they all tell the same story: They have never been able to measure any noticeable difference in fuel economy and or maintenance. None, whatsoever. So they recommend sticking with the regular fuels.

It’s not just Shell, all the other brands that offer so-called premium fuels same thing. So it might make you feel good, getting the best fuel for your beloved car, but other than being more out of pocket than with the regular variant, it doesn’t make a noticeable difference.

Whether it’s my company car, or any of my private cars I never ever use the premium fuels. Total waste of money as far as I’m concerned.

I doubt there is a single fuel on sale anywhere in the world that does not have some additives added to it.

At the bare minimum it will have some antioxidants and corrosion inhibitors I would think.

If it has a colour it has an additive too.

Why do are you looking for an additive free diesel? (Note: there is not even a uniform definition of diesel, so the chemical composition can vary regardless)

Re: Shell V-Power Diesel launched

Thanks Jeroen. By addititve, I specifically meant SystemG - used to keep injectors clean. I'm looking to use Shell diesel for my i20 and I only want standard diesel. I checked the Shell India website and they claim to use these cleaning additives on all their diesel products. That's the reason for my query.

I'm ok with other additives but not SystemG or its derivatives. If you or someone could confirm that'd be great. Thanks.

Re: Shell V-Power Diesel launched

I have been using Shell power diesel in my earlier Scorpio VLX with mhawk engine 120 bhp. From the first time till the Scorpio moved to another seller at. 1,25,000 it was always Shell power diesel because there is a pump close to home.

I can give a reverse opinion if I may call it. Every time I’ve gone out of town on trips and filled regular diesel on my way back the roughness in the car was always clearly visible and a slight drop in fuel economy of 1 km too. The only exception being Reliance fuel.
Also whoever has sat in my car and driven has always been impressed with the smoothness of the engine compared to their Scorpios.

Have got a Type 2 Fortuner now which has more than 2 lakh kilometres. Always on power diesel just like the Scorpio and never had a problem. Engine sound, smoothness, better pick up and mileage of 11.5 kms with sedate driving in city.

So, atleast my experience has been very good so far. But then it also came at higher expenditure over the years. That would be the only negative if I may call it

Re: Shell V-Power Diesel launched

My experience with Shell V power diesel

I started using premium fuel for my (Vento TDI 1.6 2014) from 2018 onwards. Obviously, I never had an issue during the initial Period of ownership until 35K on the ODO. I was using HP regular diesel always as there was one near my house.

Off late, I started noticing something horrible on the rear-view mirror while hard acceleration, heavy black smoke and it was happening frequently and noticed a slight dip in performance.

After reading through several forums, I decided to tank up Shell V power diesel from Old madras road pump and I was travelling to Chennai on the same day.

Magic moment – Cranked up and started rolling out of the fuel station, I didn’t feel any immediate difference. However, once I pressed the A pedal a bit, Vento launched like a rocket and engine response was super smooth and NIL black smoke under hard acceleration. I might be exaggerating, I felt like Vento got remapped in the past 15 minutes. Ohh my god, Vento was blazing towards Chennai and heart was jumping in Joy.

However, the magic moment lasted only up to Vellore, I mean the super smooth acceleration was missing suddenly but the performance was still fine and no back smoke since then.

I tried V power Diesel while returning from Chennai, but I missed the super smooth acceleration and not sure why is that? Might be a placebo effect? But certainly, I can say the performance level has improved a lot and most importantly there was no black smoke.

Since then, I consistently used V power Diesel for two plus years until COVID lockdown (2020) and enjoyed the trail blazing drives. Currently, I stopped visiting Shell pump due to high cost difference compared to PSU’s, hope they will roll back soon.

Drive safe.

Re: Shell V-Power Diesel launched

My Experience with Shell V Power Diesel
Car: Kia Sonet D6AT (2021)

Usually I avoid the Shell fuel stations as there is significant price difference as compared to HP or BPCL which is my regular preference. However as I was running extremely low on diesel, went to the nearest Shell station and tired the Shell V power diesel by chance as the fuel pump attendant was insisting much.

With around 43K on the ODO in this car, and having another new Kia Sonet D6AT (2023) at home with 11K on the ODO, there was a stark difference in the smoothness and vibration levels of both the cars as the new car engine felt noticeably smoother and with much lesser vibrations.

Have driven around 700kms after tankful with V power and engine has smoothened out significantly, the vibrations, though minimal which were felt on A pedal, even on steering wheel, specifically during higher revs have also gone to a large extent.

There is no noticeable difference in performance as explained by others as well. This 2021 Sonet now feels almost similar in smoothness and vibrations to our newer(2023) car.

I am extremely happy with the overall outcome, which is much beyond my expectations so much that I came looking for other's feedback and found this thread

Re: Shell V-Power Diesel launched

My Figo Aspire felt very smooth when tanked with Shell V Power diesel, I am not sure if it was a good thing to do, but I would alternate between normal shell diesel and V-Power diesel when doing tank fulls, was very happy with the smoothness and the zoom factor.
Then the prices soared up with difference close to Rs. 30-35 in comparison with IOCL/HPCL and switched to Reliance as an alternative.
Of-late my Aspire seems to love IOCL normal / standard diesel and I am wary of going to a shell pump for fueling diesel even if the price gap has reduced - though not much. The reason being, not many takers for shell diesel - V Power or otherwise, so not sure about the quality of diesel that is lying there in those tanks from so many days. Paranoid? - yes! but, better safe than sorry!
