I am curious, suppose the vehicle is parked by the side of a road and a vehicle hits the front of the car at a high speed, wouldn't the airbags deploy upon impact? Assuming there are occupants inside it ideally should. Perhaps, the impact sensors/accelerometers would sense the impact and trigger the ACU to deploy the airbags? Not sure.

Answers are unclear to me. I guess the "requirements" would change from country to country - but I'm under the impression that airbags don't ever deploy if vehicle speed is 0 km/h.

I did come across a few links that mentioned the required 7Gs of deceleration, and something like a 12 (?) mph speed (provided 7Gs of deceleration was reached).

Gannu, you are right. Case in point below. The car was stationary till the impact, yet airbags deployed.

Re: Brand new Skoda Octavia: Curtain Airbags deploy without impact / accident!

any more news regarding this matter??

honestly I am still not sure how the curtain airbags can deploy with such minimal impact!?!

so while standing at the signal - some biker comes too close for comfort, stops and suddenly drops the bike towards the car's side - will the airbags deploy :P ?

Only if the impact of the falling bike is significant enough to register an acceleration at the sensor that is higher than the threshold. This is unlikely in the case of the falling bike.

Answer is - it depends. It will trigger if the sensor, or the part on which the sensor is fitted gets dislocated thus creating an acceleration(or deceleration).

Consider this car itself. Suppose the sensor is mounted on the door skin, it can very well trigger the airbag if the skin is hit hard enough to create a mild dent or deformation which can be a common occurrence in our country. However, I believe that the sensor is mounted on a structural member, like the side protection beam of the door since this will be more rigid and hence the airbag will not trigger on light impact.

Just a small experiment, hold a smartphone in your hand and use an app that can sense the accelerometer data. Try causing sudden movements and see what the accelerometer measures. Same way does the Airbag sensor work.

Hence, whether car is moving or stationary, as long as the system is powered(meaning key in ON) position the airbags will inflate if the collision demands it to.
