so while standing at the signal - some biker comes too close for comfort, stops and suddenly drops the bike towards the car's side - will the airbags deploy :P ? |
Answer is - it depends. It will trigger if the sensor, or the part on which the sensor is fitted gets dislocated thus creating an acceleration(or deceleration).
Consider this car itself. Suppose the sensor is mounted on the door skin, it can very well trigger the airbag if the skin is hit hard enough to create a mild dent or deformation which can be a common occurrence in our country. However, I believe that the sensor is mounted on a structural member, like the side protection beam of the door since this will be more rigid and hence the airbag will not trigger on light impact.
Just a small experiment, hold a smartphone in your hand and use an app that can sense the accelerometer data. Try causing sudden movements and see what the accelerometer measures. Same way does the Airbag sensor work.
Hence, whether car is moving or stationary, as long as the system is powered(meaning key in ON) position the airbags will inflate if the collision demands it to. |
