Toyota Fortuner: Excessive turbo whistle

Guys,

Have any of you faced a problem of an extremely loud whistling / whizzing noise from Toyota Fortuner's Turbo?

on a road trip, earlier this month, I noticed the following problem

- An hour into the road trip
- whenever the engine speed crossed 2500 rpm, and beyond 100 kmph
- A very very loud turbo whistling / whizzing sound came from the engine bay.
- It was so loud, that shutting the windows had no effect. very audible
- Power delivery didnt go down by much. Maybe a little, but as I had become cautious, I didn't notice any lag below 3000 rpm.

I searched across forums, and found the problem in the 4x4 south african forums. They alleged that the sound comes from the Turbo pipes, if they are not tightly screwed on and is common for Toyota Fortuners?

Didn't even one thread or mention of this problem among the Team-BHP threads.

Any thoughts ideas?

My Fortuner is a 2009 4x4 D4d 3.0 has covered aout 72,000 kms and is fitted with a Pete's tuning box. though I doubt that is the source of the problems.

Would be sending over the car to Topsel Toyota, this weekend?

The most common problem may be a loose turbo pipe. Some rubber pipes tend to develop cracks due to ageing, causing airleaks.
I dont think petes box has nothing to do with the particular issue.
Anyways get it checked from the authorised service center, they will be able to pin point the exact fault.

Your research is in the right path and this particular sound would in fact come from loose turbo plumbing, but driving the vehicle with the problem persistent, could cause damage to the engine, as the turbo might be sucking in unfiltered air and forcing it into the engine. Please get it check ASAP with an ASC as it is fairly simple job.

Re: Toyota Fortuner: Excessive turbo whistle

Guys,

Thank you for the advice.

Sent my car over to Authorized service centre. It was a one day job. No replacement parts were sought. It took only a couple of hours, and I was charged only for Labour. Total costs, around 920 Rupees.

The Turbo pipes were fine. The Problem lay inside the air-filter assembly, where a leak was created. Topsel Toyota did advise that this problem does happen with Fortuners and should be fixed quickly to ensure longevity of the engine.

Would recommend other Fortuner users to check whether their car suffers from the same problem, by testing it out on a safe stretch of road, and if a loud whistle comes, they must proceed to the Authorized service centre's and get it fixed quickly.

Cheers, and here's to many more miles of munching with my beloved Fortuner.

Re: Toyota Fortuner: Excessive turbo whistle

Isn't the turbo whistling a normal phenomena?

Asking this as my car also has turbo whistle albeit there is no loss of any power nor is the whistling really loud , but it is still there.

Any pointers?

Edit : I know the thread reads "excessive turbo whistle" but still asking all the engine gurus.

Ishlinea,

If there is a leak somewhere from the Turbo to the Engine, the Fortuner is capable of making a very very loud noise. In decibels, it may be over 90 Decibels. Extremely audible even after the windows are shut.

The only solution for so much noise, is more noise. And that's what we did on a recent road trip. Cranked up Yo Yo Honey Singh, until his vocal chords nearly gave way.

On a serious note, I am sure your Fortuner is fine. If the noise is unbearable, you now know what to do.
