i am not sure if it is the right place for this topic, so please do the needful.

i want to know what is the correct procedure of using a handbrake!

we all know that we can engage it in two different ways:-

1. pull it up directly with those click-click-click sounds
2. pull it up while keeping that button pressed(meant to release the handbrake), as this way there is no click-click sound.

i personally prefers to use option 2 as it feels quite smooth and also helps in releasing the brake quickly after slight usage.

i guess, besides general usage on city roads etc., option 2 is quite helpful on tracks too. am i correct?

is there any problem in adopting to any one specific method?

please respond to this very small query of mine! :)

i prefer option 1 both are safe but if you want to have fun try some hand brake turns on some dirt roads

Its direcly with the click click sounds

Why-0 thats the idication that the brake is engaging
If you dont get the sounds means there is a problem
But if you used method 2 , you would never know if your handbrake acdtually engaged properly or not

Secondly, once you do it a few times you will know how many clicks it takes to fully engage the brake (Giev or take one clicks)
If the number of clicks increases then it means that you ar having to pull the cable a lot more and need the handbrake adjusted.
If that doesnt help, then you need your rear brakes to be checked

And as i said before- use option and you will never know if any of this stuff is happening how its supposed to.

Hey, Wait till u hear about hand brakes + baleno + dirt from mclaren !!!!

Cheers

The correct procedure is to find a straight empty road, Drive at a reasonable speed. And yank the handbrake hard while giving ur steering a bit of twist.

This is the only way i use the handbrake :-)

But for mundane jobs like "parking" I use the second option.. cos i hate that click click sound

Revharder,

The "click-click-click" sound is nothing more than a ratchet.
Basically all it is, is a spring loaded piece climbing on steps as you pull the lever up.
Kinda like this, same principle.
The only function of the ratchet is to only allow the brake lever to be pulled up and not go back down unless u press the button to disengage the ratchet.

So basically, it doesnt make a difference. If you like the sound just pull it up. If you dont like the sound, press the button.

i wanted to know that whether 1st or 2nd option is better, when one needs to use handbrake while driving.
say, while driving on road if option1 is used then imho, the time taken to release the hand brake will be slightly higher.
in this situation option2 will not take as much time as option1, and will allow quick release of handbrake with slightly lesser time.

since the pressing of button takes quite a good time, pressing it in very start should be beneficial.
am i correct in this theory?

i am not asking for using the handbrake while parking the car.

Hey, The hand brake lever in race cars has the button removed as one wudn't want it to get stuck pulled up when used incase hand slips of the lever !! Also in races iof used its used in short bursts so the release is very critical .... And in regular road use I wudn't recomending using the hand brake anyways unless u really prepared for it so just practise using it with the buttone pressed --- after some time it will just become a habit !!!

Cheers

khaadu,
i am using it with the button pressed everytime since last several years.

yes, you are right in pointing out that lever can stuck if button is not pressed while lifting the lever and there is sudden need of releasing it.

so, imho, to use it properly while driving, keep that button pressed!
but lets see what others has to say about this!

arey yaar so siimble!!!
press the button or dont and pull the hand brake lever.
release and let it be engaged
now engage 1st gear and try gently to move forward if it does not then its properly engaged (this latter part is for the timid).

anyways ur option 2 is fine but make sure u have pulled it up to a fair extent of locking apna apna judgement.
dont go by the handbrake light on ur meter.
cheers

Revharder,

Man, Does not matter... use as you want.

Preference 1; when you have a sore left thumb

Preference 2: when somebody is sleeping in the car you dont want to wakeup

well, thanx for replies but only khaadu came closest to my query! :)

Use option 2. The reason being that the clicking sound is from the ratchet. If you keep pulling it over the teeth, they will tend to wear out over prolonged use, which could lead to your hand brake lever slipping due to the worn out teeth, which of course could be disastrous.

I know of one instance when my friends Santro rolled out of the garage and into a fence. It seems his handbrake didnt engage properly because some of the teeths had worn out. I always used 1st option but never ran into any problem with the hand brakes. So not sure whether the above was an one of instance.
