Here is a link, probably useful for garmin users:-

OSM Map On Garmin - OpenStreetMap

And what I find useful about OSM is that we can upload data we collect on our own GPS devices to OSM; so that others will find it useful.
Garmin is easy.
Just download the india.img(12MB) and it will work on your garmin

I guess that's the biggest problem, whole of India is only 12mb or so.

BTW - is there a way to correlate Map-my-india with google? I.e. I find a location using map my india on my PC and then plot it on google so that I can see it on my phone.

Using coordinates or something?

I was succesfully able to get the route recorded in D7. Now I am trying to play it back, but it does not give me any indication of time.

I would want to convert this recorded stuff to any other apps like google earth/maps and then try it out.

Any suggestions for a convertor app?

Yup, india is sparingly mapped.
While I cannot offer you anything for rural India, I can assure that in a couple of months we are going to extensively map New Delhi and Noida, taking care of the small roads, and also adding POIs and names of important monuments.
The Aim is to do 100% mapping of Delhi with everything of importance mapped.
So nobody would have to waste money on a Delhi map ever again.

Buy? who said anything about buy.
All you need to do is go to open streetmap, download the osm file for India, and then use mkgmap to convert it into garmin format(img).
BTW, Bangalore is pretty well mapped, thanks to a very active IT industry.

Hi, Recently while browsing Sony Ericsson website, I found an accessory HGE-100 which is a headset with media player control buttons cum GPS receiver. Its supposed to work with Sony Ericsson phones with fast port connector. Has anyone tried it yet ?

Hi Sumit,

Will it be possible for you to share your downloaded maps with us ?

You can upload it to Rapidshare or Megaupload or some filesharing site as per your convienience.

Am finding it too difficult to download from Yahoo India, Google etc., due to ip banning problem. Pls help.

yesterday I had to do a up-down drive to haridwar from delhi and I used google maps application and BeelineGPS on my HTC all the time. Google map is very accurate to make sure that you are on right track. I marked some of the waypoints in beelineGPS applications like Meerut bypass and few others using coordinates from google maps. and kept the alert on when I am near 1 km to those waypoints. very useful

I find map my India wayfinder inav loaded very useful because of the preloaded maps of all the important cities as well as highways plus it has voice navigation and has both symbian and windows version it is useless to have a gps without proper localized software and data

the map tiles can be stored in the mobile phone memory card and be browsed with mgmaps.

maps are pretty accurate but no voice navigation available( afterall, its a free software).
I have managed to download the Detailed Yahoo India map for Chennai and its outskirts. Zoom Level 0 to 17. Works pretty well with mgmaps - stored map enabled. No GPRS Connection required. Still voice navigation is not enabled. But maps are very detailed and accurate.

The total size of the maps is around 100MB. Let me know in case anyone is interested in trying it out. Can upload to any file-sharing site.

Moderators can't team BHP has map files hosted ? I see that forum allows only
Image files and Microsoft documents to be uploaded (bmp doc gif gpx jpe jpeg jpg kml kmz pdf png xls )which are huge , why not allow extensions of map files in the parsing rules as well ?

I will be interested in Chennai maps. Is there anyway I can download maps directly? You will be spared to uploading 100MB of data...

India.img from cloudmade(link earlier) is 12MB, and covers chennai too. Chennai is mapped pretty accurately in OSM.
