What is it on top of WAGON-R?

Hi guys,

On top of wagon R & many other cars I have seen 2 smooth bars running .
What is it called & what is the uitlity of this?
Please put some light on this.
My guess it is some saftey feature related to rolling or toppeling.

They call them Ski Racks

The two bars are called Ski Racks. Supposedly for lashing your skis when you drive up to the Ski slopes.

But in a tropical country like ours, this is the most stupidest thing I have seen. But it could be used for other purposes. I have seen clamp on luggage carriers that can be fixed on top of the ski racks so that extra luggage can be taken around.

Or, you can add large footrests at the bottom of your vehicle and then your goons can hang outside your car, holding onto that ski rack!! i think in india's context, this gives the ski rack more purpose!

Cheers

nope ski racks run from one left side of vehicle roof to the right side.
the ones that go from front of vehicle to back serve no purpose IMO

I found this on the net...
Roof rails
The roof rails are the basic supports for transporting items on the roof. With their help the vehicle can be used in a variety of ways when the interior has already been filled. Suitable accessories can be attached to the roof rails to attach bicycles, skis, storage boxes, surfboards and even boats securely. Because the rails themselves are aerodynamically shaped, they do not generate wind noise. The owner’s manual for the car contains information about maximum loads they can carry. The driver must remember that the handling characteristics of the car can be changed significantly depending on the weight of the load on the roof. Apart from their practical uses, the roof rails are also an attractive design element that emphasize the car’s sporty character and thereby round out the dynamic appearance of many Audi models. BNB,

Your last post sums it up perfectly. (Do try and provide a link to your source of information in the future though).

The roof rails are what the ski-racks etc are mounted to.

Post moved to "Technical Stuff".

I think they are used to create aerodynamic efficiency.. Air splitters.. Keeps the car on the ground.. Thats the main point they forgot to highlight as a advantage over the santro

I used to think that it serves as 2 handles to lift the car back on to four wheels if in case it topples

I find them useful when cleaning the roof of my car. Something to hold onto when trying to swipe the centre.

No other use identified as yet.

I think he meant roof rails. You can run a train on that whenever you face a traffic jam.
