Verna Feels Heavy and Rough After Turbo Replacement

Hello Guys

it was second week of december 2011 , i was getting ready for my routine service of my verna crdi. bought 5.5 lts of mobil 1 delvac Mx for my baby.

Service Adviser told me that my turbo has whistling noise and it should be checked. after 3 hours they told me that my turbo is dying and i have to replace that.

as it was under warrenty , i gave them green signal , new turbo was ordered and it took close to 6 days for turbo to arrive at hass. i must tell you that i observed a visible change in driving characterstics of m car. the car was very smooth and was like a jet after 2k rpm.

turbo came and it was duly replaced on same day , i collected my car @ 7 PM and car was like Tight (hope you understand that).

Horror starts after two hours when suddenly there was sounds like air pressure leak , khat khat sound and lots and lots of white smoke. After some calls i was sure that turbo was blown .

Service advisor is known and was kind enough to send a mech at place i was. car was driven to hass with intercooler disconnected and speed below 20kmph. next morning team of seniors checked the car and it was sure thet turbo was seized with broken fins (Pics attached).

Engine oil was spread all over the exaust and oil cooler. after some discussion , they (hass people) decided to replae the turbo again. i was provided wwith Elantra Gls As Courtsy car as the repairs are done under warrenty and t took more then 10 days due to christmas and new year holidays. after turbo replacement , they also changed actuator as they have doubt about that.

Now i am driving that car from last one month , the smoothness and rocket like feel is gone . rocket like feel is there after 2k rpm but only 60 to 70% as compared to earlier. Car feels like very heavy and rough to drive but hass people say its okay. i dont know that roughness is due to turbo change or what and also there is slight increase in overall nvh levels of car it feels like vibration is increase in car during ideling ???

Please note that i have also upgraded my tyres to 195/60/15 michlin primacy lc which has made my steering a bit heavier.and engine oil was refilled at hass with shell helix (i Think)

Please pour in your suggessions

Regards

Jas

Re: Verna Feels Heavy and Rough Aftter Turbo Replacemet

From the photo I understand it is a Honeywell VNT, the blades of the turbine wheel is damaged. Just confirm with HSS what replacement turbo they have used second time.

Re: Verna Feels Heavy and Rough After Turbo Replacement

Couple of things:
a. Check turbo at outside workshop. Heaviness = turbo problem. See if its leaking oil or such
b. Outside shot but maybe the EGR valve may need cleaning, though that should ideally have been sorted out by HASS if that was the case.

Edit; cause saab, ECU reset does little in this case imho

Are there any hissing sound? Improper turbo plumbing and leaks can lead to power loss. Please check if the plumbing is done properly once again.

Also, plugin and OBD and check the boost (I guess one can do that in a Verna) and the status of the sensors and any error codes.

Finally, clean the intake manifold and reset the ECU.

Intake Manifold is cleaned and there is no error via OBD

Re: Verna Feels Heavy and Rough After Turbo Replacement

Ask the technician to take back to back drives in your car and another verna. Be with him during both the drives and let him compare.Just make sure you make him drive a good verna and then your verna.Let the drive be long, preferably highway

Re: Verna Feels Heavy and Rough After Turbo Replacement

The reason that you find inadequate performance is that the new turbo would be "tight" as you have rightly assessed and has to be broken in. Once you have driven about 1500 - 2000 kms you will find a gradual improvement in the performance of the turbo. A new turbo like a new engine has to "break-in" for it to give its full performance.

Earlier, your car had good performance because the turbo had the right amount of play / slop in the bearings and this will happen once you have done a certain amount of driving in the new car. The first replacement went soon because it didnt have the required "tightness" in the beginning and went down fast because of that.

Please take all the precautions while running in the new turbo (be careful in the mornings while starting and do not go very fast for first 500 - 1000 kms} so that your engine gets back to its original shape properly.

Hope this helps
